New forwards are different how? compared to Dunstall, Ablett, Brereton, Roach, Beasley, Carey, McKernan, Modra, kerhanan Tarrant, etc etc? It's a furphy... Unless you are just using Lockett as your yardstick for an 'old' forward type. Old key forwards weren't lumbering hulks anymore than they are now. In fact I'd say they are taller and less agile now on the whole.
And Plugger wasn't lumbering either. He probably kicked about 800 goals from getting separation on the lead

Looking at him now and hearing he had a medical, I'm thinking it was definitely Johnston who I saw with Hine at the club on Tuesday.
Is Johnson indigenous? It said somewhere that he is related to a McAdam. If he is, I wouldn't be surprised to see us go the Do Better report. Johnson and Stengle.

I think he would have to be. Cousin to Farar from GC and half brother to McAdam.

for me, Callow & Freeman. People are saying we need youth but our midfield is continuously getting smashed. If he can be best 22 for a few years, I will be happy. Callow was someone I thought was top 25 talent and didn't get drafted. Now I have no clue how he has gone this year, but his name is getting thrown around a lot. If we have 3 picks, I think we get a small forward, however, not Stengle. Last thing we need is another player with attitude issues in a rebuilding side.

Do we also need a player who continually broke down at AFL level, in Freeman. The intensity and demands on the body at AFL level are different to VFL.

I think whether we like or not we are going to have bring a young ruckman to develop as I think Cox,s cards have been marked and big question marks on Lynch also. As it stands we may be struggling to get either Edwards if we are lucky or Moyle and does this mean we get Heath or this Mirkov we are hearing about, I would not mind Johnson he has a bit of size and no recent baggage which is important as regards Stengle.

As we have also signed Baye will we bring in a 3rd player?.

True . The great man was deceptively quick on the burst.
Looks like we're all in agreement. Bucks was talking rubbish again when he said that.

Is Johnson just gonna be another weird sized utility type, rather a specialist small forward if so

Collingwood will only consider him if he can get up and down the ground. If his tank isn’t up to it he won’t be on our radar.

FWIW I don’t mind those types as long as they cover the ground well and have a standout trait. I think the problem we have currently is, Mihocek aside, none of the types we have cover the ground particularly well, they lack that standout trait or are inexperienced.

In midfield I am confident that Macrae, J. Daicos, N. Daicos and McInnes have strong futures.

I see these guys supported by Adams and Crisp (possibly De Goey) in the medium term, Pendles and Sidebottom in the short term.

After this group we have T Brown, Rantall, Bianco and Sier who I am less bullish about.

I also suspect there is an intention to attack free agency for a midfielder in 21/22.

I don't think the mid season draft is the way to address our midfield needs. Development and free agency is how i'd go about it.

What do we lose if he fails though. We are currently 16th.

Because there have been a number of terrific players who were overlooked at draft time, then picked up in the MSD/ rookie drafts, and gone on to be very good players for their clubs, like Mihocek, Jeremy McGovern, Bruest, Tom Stewart, Noble, Hind, Pickett for example.
So in a MSD l don't think you want to waste a pick on a player who could never get on the park at AFL level, where as, you could be missing on a player that could be a very good for years to come.

Perhaps, perhaps not.

Look at it this way - I come from a period when we were blessed with 4 great champion full forwards at once.

The game then bears no relationship in tactical systems to what it does now.

In those days having a true champion full forward was a virtual certainty of being a flag contender every year.

That is because it was still a case of forward versus defender - IN THE SINGULAR.

This is far from the case now.

Not only do defenders co-operate but the midfield will sag back to support their defenders.

Space guarding ensures that opposition forward running patterns are shorter and more constricted and intense midfield pressure ensures that ball delivery into the forward line from opposition midfielders is generally of lower quality than previously.

Soo - my opinion is . . .

Gun forwards are still a gigantic asset

But . . .

There are systems and strategies in place to control the damage they do.

So . . . yes they aren't as critical as they used to be.

Cam McLeod is an interesting one, similar attributes to Johnson and kicked 4 goals against our feeder club Chargers.

IMO he is too small to play as proper key position forward. Same with Johnson. Particularly with Mihochek already being undersized.

Similar to the way Raak will be too small to play as a key defender.

If we don’t go Callow or Hammelman etc in the mid season draft we are going to have to all in trying to get one out of another club.

Weideman, Ricardi and Coleman Jones are probably the only realistic targets. Given our lack of draft hand and the unattractiveness of our club at the moment.

I’m not necessarily against chasing one of those, but am not sure they are much more chance of making it, as high end performers, than the MSD options.

At round at 8:20 mark.

This was a good listen.

Wrighty was very cagey on all questions relating to Bucks' future (which you'd expect), but I got the impression that he's not particularly strong on Buckley being retained, nor is he happy with the gamestyle of the team. He sees gamestyle as being a question for the coach only and he thinks our inability to kick a winning score is only partly a personnel issue.

He made the point that Collingwood is coached to be a defence first team. He sees our inability to score and our struggles with moving the ball and connecting with our forwards as, at least in part, a gamestyle issue.

Wright has always been involved with attacking teams and he doesn't think we'll be in contention for at least 2 years. If he is being asked to build a list that will contend in that window, I find it hard to believe that he will build the list to suit a coach that focuses on dour, defensive football. There is a clear disconnect in my opinion that doesn't bode well for Bucks
