It’s not terribly helpful to add I’ll admit but I quite like Jeka’s name in the event of a bag of five one day

JE-KAAAARRRR!!
His name sounds like a destination in Star Wars. "I've just got a transmission from Moss Kuhl on Jeka."

Nah, I very much doubt that. The hubs had nothing to do with the poor game day coaching, poor game plan and the boring terrible football we played. Or maybe you didn't watch us play last season? That must be it.
Disagree. Go back and watch the first 4 rounds and you'll see we were playing good footy and then as soon as the AFL f&$ked us hard with hub life it all went to shit.

Afl didn't cause the pandemic, plenty of clubs had hubs and did okay.

As soon as the shortened season and restricted training came in i knew we were pushing it uphill. Young side, lots of list change, new game plan. Last season suited stable mature sides so no surprises Geelong and Richmond made the grand final.

What we did however was unacceptable, we performed worse than our list suggests. We rarely clicked and often did not play our best available 22.

If the COVID-19 training restrictions are in place for the pre season and regular season we will be bottom 4 again I fear. Too many new faces and the requirements that Clarko puts on structure and system will flat out splutter all season.
I really hope that there is a revert back to an old school system with coal face warriors that can get the ball, fast ball movement and power forwards.
I’d also like to see 1v1 defence more than a zone system and have a flat out shoot out on toughness and endurance. I think we have the players to do so and if the “old school” system works then I believe we could get back to putting up big scores.
We would concede a few over the back now and then but having 100 point shoot outs would be a hell of a lot more fun than the tripe that the AFL has evolved into.
Bring back the unsociable Hawks in 2021 please!

Even if that happens, a bottom four finish this year in what shapes as the strongest draft in a while might not be the worst outcome. We could be looking at three picks inside the top 30.

It would be disappointing to be bottom 4 again but a marquee player is something that we are lacking.
We need a new Buddy, Cyril, Hodge; Dusty, Cripps, Dangerfield that can carry a team on their back with brilliance.
The players we have are a level beneath these guys. I may be looking at this with rose coloured glasses on the past but we just don’t have those quality guys that we use to.
I think we have a lot that could elevate themselves to that level in Jager, Mitchell, Wingard, Sicily...Worps, Impey.
I think that Hawthorn have become the definition of “Vanilla” with the way we have built this list.
There aren’t any personalities on game day. There aren’t any personalities for the media to get a hold of. It is just bland.
3 picks inside 30 is great but there is just so much almost on the list to keep me excited for what might be possible if it clicks.

Disagree. Go back and watch round two, which was the absolutely embarrassing second half thrashing we copped against Geelong. Maybe the hub factor kicked in at exactly half time of that game?

Round three was a nice performance against a Dusty-less Richmond side. However the second half performance, and last quarter in particular was worrying to those who watched and proved to be indicative of what we saw in most of the second halves throughout the rest of the season. If Richmond kicked straight, particularly in the last, the game would be much closer. It was 1 goal to 2 goals 6 behinds. Eight shots to one and we couldn't get it beyond the halfway mark of the field.

In round four we barely scraped home against one of the scarce few teams that were actually worse than us. Had the game gone on another two minutes we'd have lost.

The hub had nothing to do with the boring defensive game plan, the second half fades and the game day coaching. Nor did the hubs seemingly affect any other club, bar us apparently.

The hub just exposed our flaws, I reckon.

Of course the hubs had no impact, the players, coaches and support staff are all machines and function with out any emotional disruption.

R1 and R18 were the only 2 complete performances of the year. We played 3 solid quarters in the Carlton game. A great first half v Essendon. Competitive v Saints and Port. Rest was a shitshow.

Not sure I have ever said it had no impact or that the players are machines. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

What I have said is that it has no impact on that boring defensive game plan and the game day coaching. I also point out that is seems that if the hub has as much of an impact on us that others are claiming, then why did it not affect other sides?

I believe whilst we are an average side, thr hubs definitely played a part.

However how is that a good thing to fall back on? Other clubs thrived and showed stronger resilience.

Soon as it got tough the group just couldn't handle it. Not very promising signs tbh.

Let's see how 2021 pans out though. See if they can bounce back.

Not every club had the same circumstances and schedule.
We are also a club which is highly dependent on systems and structure - it's everything to Clarkson.

some on here are using the hub to excuse poor performance(we all know it must have been hard emotionally and personally on players being separated from family and friends as we in lockdown Melbourne were also in a similar position + we(HFC) had it slightly harder having to travel to 3 states ect), whereas you are revealing problems prior to the lockdowns and post lockdowns so consistent problems in hope the club can correct those problems, thats the disconnect between you and others on here it seems.

its the battle between excuse makers, the club knows what they are doing Vs the problem solvers, finding problems so the club can hopefully solve them and get better, both groups have their time when they are needed, when things are going good we need the excuse makers to maintain the course we're on and when things go bad we need the problem solvers to alert the club and supporters things need to change, thats the way i see it anyway.

I wonder if players, coaching staff etc will agree to going into hubs again with what has gone on. Hardwick rumour continues to do the rounds
Is the Hardwick rumour different to the news articles all week & the statements from the club?

Not enough hard nuts brought into the list if we have a late pick and we are going to use it why not go for a player who like playing the game hard.

The hubs definitely resulted in us having a much poorer season than we would have had otherwise. But I don't believe just because we won't, or are less likely to experience the hub factor again in 2021 that we will suddenly bounce back.

The hubs were merely the catalyst for the underlying issues that presumably will still be lingering there. And I'm not referring to things like game plan or list depth. I'm talking about things that are even less tangible.

We lacked leadership, resolve, belief, and frankly I think the majority of our opponents knew this. At the very least they had a good sense of it. That as long as they applied pressure we would eventually crumble and once we were down there was unlikely to be much chance of us fighting back to try and win, and instead play to save face by reducing the chance of a blow out.

This is a good thing though because now the club knows and they can do something about it. And I like to think they already are.

If you've watched the video of Sam Mitchell addressing Box Hill you'll have noted just how much importance he's placing on the mental side of things. I doubt that's a strategy that is occurring in isolation in the seconds. Not when you consider where Sam has received the majority of his own footballing tutelage from over the past 15 years.

Well said. A very strong assessment of our issues last year.
