I must be living in some kind of parallel universe...Dunstan received 11 Brownlow votes from 12 games and some of you are saying he is a half decent depth player. I only imagine if he gets to play a full season in a good team..... he will be dynamic. Petracca Viney Oliver Bradshaw and Dunstan. A very nice combo.

It's not just us it's also 16 AFL clubs

I thought I implied he was a brilliant depth player. A brilliant depth player is better than a half decent depth player.

If Dunstan was coming to us everyone would be looking at the positives.

There's a tendency to overrate what we do and put the kybosh on what others do. Even though we make our share of mistakes like everyone else.

I'd love to have Dunstan on our list instead of a few others who are there but it was never doable. I think it's a canny pick up by Melbourne and he could prove more than useful next year.

Dunstan is a low risk inclusion for Melbourne.
At best he could compliment the dynamic qualities of Petracca and Oliver, getting his share of contested ball while a Petracca perhaps spends time forward.
At worst he can be hidden in that midfield collecting an easy 20 p’s a week or simply as depth in the magoos.

For us (and Port imo) he likely doesn’t improve or compliment our midfield as much with our current mix in there.

Dunstan - so we add not quick accumulator, with ordinary skills. Turns the ball over more than any of our existing.

How does that mix with Neale, Lyons, Robertson, Berry, Matho, CEY & Ely Smith? None are quick and if honest there skills are mixed at the best of times.

We need more complimentary mids & wings, with some different skillsets. Pace, foot skills, etc Zorko, Bailey, etc. hopefully also have ball winning ability.

I struggle to understand how some cannot comprehend this. More of the same/similar is not the answer.

To whomever was speculating about the AFL holding up trades until the last minute for "suspense", here's official confirmation that it's an actual policy - not just politely asking like they did in the past:

No trades can be officially signed off until after midday on Wednesday, but it’s expected the clubs will lodge the arrangement with the AFL in the early afternoon, well before the 7.30pm deadline.

Why is everyone still talking about Dunston?
He’s a Melbourne player let’s just get over it.

You have to work out who are your best 1 maybe 2 slow inside mids because you pay for having more of them than that. The Saints found that this year and we struggled to compete with the top teams with two slow guys. If Dunstan is the only slow guy in your midfield he would be absolutely fine but virtually every other team has someone they would prefer to play ahead of him. He is a very nice depth player and someone who will do fine individually when he plays but he is what he is and I don't think he is a regular in the current top 4 teams.

It's Action Day. Strap yourselves in.

The only interesting thing for me really is seeing if Hawks move any of their players or if they have no takers & it turns into a dumpster fire next year.

Oh, and seeing if there are any unexpected players that move on the final day.

I raised it in the context that Melbourne signing him was hardly a massive cue, and certainly not the kind of move that gives them the status of having 'Won' the trade period according to Kane Cornes. He could end up doing a Jarrod Lyons, but is just as likely to do a CEY.

If we didn't already have Lyons I would have loved to have Dunstan.

95% sure this will all go through in the end, but who's the backup if the Cats don't get Ceglar and so demand too much for Fort?

Fort will definitely go through. On the 0.00001% chance that it doesn't I guess we could pick up Mason Cox as a DFA?

Darcy Fort will be a Lion by the end of the day.

Assuming Fort becomes a Lion that makes about the 7th or 8th Cat we have traded in from Geelong over the last 10 years - just off the top of my head: Fort, Cockatoo, Linc, Walker, Bundy, West, Jansen. Begs the question- why so many from one club?

Is there anything definitive in terms of comments from Ashcroft or is Dad about him nominating for us under F/S?

I am pretty sure he is no longer eligible for Suns academy because they shifted to Melbourne.

Fletcher Jnr sounds quite likely given his dad has moved back to Queensland.

Given cap / list issues this year was only ever going to be one in which we tread water in terms of established players. Darcy Fort would be a sensible pick-up and seems to have some untapped ability.

We have had plenty of established players come in over the past 5 years. Time for a young talent top-up with 14/18/Ashcroft. With some luck we might have some cap space for a decent free agent next year, even if it's only a 400-500k sort of player. Depends what we feel we need by then (dependent on which young players have come on) and who is available.

What's the supposed mail on next year's draft talent? We are shaping to have a few de-lists, maybe 5-6, so hoping it's a strong one.

Given their success they've probably had quite a few fringe players who could offer a lot to a struggling club like ours (prior to 2019).

I wouldn’t have high hopes of next year being particularly exciting for us either unless a player on big money is leaving us. We won’t have much of a draft hand either after hopefully matching bids of both Ashcroft and Fletcher, wouldn’t surprise me if all our picks next year are kids already attached to us via f/s or academy.

Would seem like the late picks we have this year either don't have as much value as we'd hoped or we missed our chance to help out the teams that need points for bidding.
