We should have some picks around where Motlop is valued so should take him if we want him.
I think it's unlikely. We're not going to reach for him just because he's in our academy. Only way he ends up on our list, besides lasting past 40, is if he is at the top of the list (or grouping) of players left when our pick falls (whatever it ends up being)

I wouldn't give up hope of him sliding past 40. AISTR last year the SA / WA players turned out to be over represented in the medias phantoms (e.g. Walker). The recruiters ended up being less influenced by the lack of Vic footy than the likes of Twomey.

I don't understand why we want Jesse Motlop so much. Just because he's in our academy doesn't mean it's essential for us to get him, we already have enough small forwards I just don't get why we need another. I'm not saying he doesn't have potential I just think he isn't as big of a priority as people are making him out to be.

We don't have though. We have one genuine small forward - Schultz. And I'm not even certain he plays like a genuine small either - he can at least hit the scoreboard though. The rest are either midfielders we are playing forward; half forwards; or something halfway between. Could probably get away with it if we had more dangerous tall and medium forwards but we don't have many of those either.

I'd argue the one actual small forward we have is Switta personally but the dude is making Pearce look like an ironman. Schultz is a Toby Greene light.

Motlop seems like a genuine small forward to me

If we don't view Henry and Western as genuine small forwards then what are they.
Henry is a wing/high half forward who should be delivering the ball inside 50. Western is Colyer or should go on ball if everything comes together (like Switta the last couple of games). Neither are genuine small forwards like a Pickett

Western is a mid/fwd. At Colts he played mid and half forward last year and the year before he played a bit of wing as well (including a very impressive performance on the wing in the u18s all stars game). His weapon is his speed and long penetrating kick. But he needs to build up his strength to play senior footy.

Henry not much different really except hasn't played inside mid like Western so more high half forward and wing. His weapon is his agility and skills.

Crowden is an inside mid - his weapon is his kicking when he gets the ball on the outside, his long handballs plus his pressure on ball.

Switta when not injured doesn't threaten the scoreboard enough to be a genuine small forward imo. He's also rarely going to be the guy playing deep. His weapon is his explosive speed and pressure. He's a line breaker and if we can get his body right then I want to see him play more mid minutes.

None of these guys are going to be like Kysaiah Pickett. Motlop plays a lot more like Pickett than any of our small forwards.

I like versatility but sometimes you need players that are just really good at one thing. For us we need some that are good at kicking goals.

Henry showed flashes on a wing, westerns a mid forward type more than a genuine small forward

Does Motlop have top end speed/agility?

That's what I want to see injected into our forward line by a small.
He has terrific pressure, very good speed and terrific goal sense from my viewing.

Glides across the ground but wouldnt say it's top end agility.

I will asterisk this by saying this after watching him in like 3 games

Our small forwards don’t kick enough goals (except Schultz) and none of them apply AFL standard pressure. I’d say any natural forward is a list need at this point, big or small.

His agility is ok...

Now you can say you've watched 3 games and a highlight.

I like him mostly because of his football brain. Gets to the right spots a lot, which is half the battle for a small forward. I think people criticise him because he hangs off the ball but I would be very surprised if that isn't directed by the coaches. Our dumb forwards spoil each other half the time. Have seen him win his own ball, lays a good tackle for his size, has confidence without being a douche.

I summon the Freo draft watchers three to confirm my notes (wayToGo_ Ysaye Bastyy )
Yeah you're right on Motlop Snuff, he's got all the tools to be a weapon running around the forward line and is a genuine small forward. I reckon some people were surprised when Twomey rated Motlop so high but he's the only quality genuine small forward in this draft from my POV. I'd be picking him anywhere from 20+ if I'm Freo rather then risking him not getting to 40

Yep, IMO to be a small forward you need speed, football brain and pressure intent. Motlop ticks all three. I'm not saying he'll be a gun a small forward because I'm not an expert and I think his speed is good without being elite but I think there is a lot to work with.

He's getting games at South's in the finals for a reason...

And on top of 6 goals in 5 League games, he's also averaged 3 tackles per game.

He knows how to draw a free kick as well - so no doubt West Coast are all over him like a rash.

That's the rub, though. Do we take him with a second round pick, or will fans melt if we don't take an available KPF in that range?

If he's good enough then we should take him. If we want others around that area of the draft, then we should be trying to get the picks in our trade negotiations.

Western currently isn't AFL level anything atm. We definitely shouldn't be holding off filling our need for a quality small forward because he's on the list, that's for sure!
If you forced me to pick yes or no is he going to make it at this point, and it is too early to tell yet I should emphasize, but if you forced me; I'd say no he's not.

Bit harsh for a 174cm player in their first AFL season. The kid can play, give him some time to prove it. He's looked much better when played on ball for Peel but still needs more strength for senior footy.

Whilst talking about Peel I think people are going to be very happy with how O'Driscoll is developing. Looking very good when on ball for Peel. Some of his work v Subi was very good. Still not sure why half back is even an option for him?!?
