Both midfields were solid though but I think our Midfield is too.
I'm less convinced about our midfield. We are losing Cerra and then Mundy, and we don't have replacements for them. We also struggled with midfield-forward connection and those guys are key components for that.

In addition Valente is now an unlikely success story for us. So many of our potential additions to the midfield are massively speculative (Western, O'Driscoll, Chapman, Frederick).

I think we need one of our best picks to be a midfielder and another later in the draft.

With regard to Motlop , I think we need to use our first 3 picks on 2 x Tall forwards and one mid (either Johnson or Erasmus)
Then if Motlop is still available after 40 then grab him
More important to grab the big guys this year because they take longer to develop

Next year go for the best available small forward with our first if we dont get Motlop this year

Then by 2024 when Lachie comes back , we will have a well balanced list ready for a major tilt at the big prize . Yahoo!

Is there fresh news with Valente or just a general vibe around him? Last I heard he will be fit and available day 1 of pre season.
Unless there’s been a new development I’m still very bullish he can come in and play that big bodied role next year. He’s built like a brick shithouse and he’s good on both sides. He also captained SA in his draft year and he’s the current custodian of number 29 so clearly his character is of high quality. I’ve only seen him at pre season training and normally in the rehab group but the Peel watchers generally think his game will translate to the next level.
With this in mind I’m more inclined to want to target forwards with all three of our first picks. Our depth and general quality there is not great so if we have to take Motlop with our second rounder it won’t be the end of the world.

2 X tall forwards, a mid and a quality small forward would be better and shouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility.

Also, JVR looks ready to go to me so if he was one of the talls all the better.

Do we take JVR at pick 8/10 or hope he's available in the second round

Valente would need to improve a hell of a lot on his WAFL form to fill Cerras role in our midfield. He's not really built like a brick shithouse either.

He looked pretty solid in some of the photos I saw earlier this year. I thought his form at Peel was building with his fitness. Do you reckon NOD is closer? He’s another who could come into the midfield already on the list.

NODs a long way off too imo but is at least building for a young guy in his first season. He's on the right track whereas Valente has been cruelled by injury but really hasn't hit too many heights on the field yet after a few years. He got absolutely monstered by a bigger bodied Greg Clarke in one game which just shouldn't be happening if he's any good, but who knows how fit or "well" he was.

Any Charlie Cameron clones in this year's draft? 😏

Thank you WTG... none of the top scorers are discussed draft experts... any way .

what do you think of Blake Howes? Vic metro... liked the description on afldraft central....
Personally I'd prefer Hough but Howes is a good prospect. I really don't know much about the Vic prospects so relying a lot on draft watchers based over there.

I don't think it is realistic to expect any of the WA tall forwards to be ready to play initially* as a primary or even secondary key position forward; even Williams who likely has the best strength and endurance of the lot will struggle against seasoned AFL types. What I would expect initially:
  • JVR in a Freo team could initially compete with Sturt, Frederick or Banfield for a role as a high leading half forward flank; this plays to his current strengths of good timing, positioning and endurance. In a best case scenario he could theoretically push Treacy out of a role as a CHF, but then Treacy will have a head start in terms of AFL preseasons (or fill in for Treacy if Treacy or Taberner is injured). In another team I can seem him starting as a rebounding second or third tall defender, and being pretty useful as that.
  • Williams would probably initially play as a third forward alternating to a backup ruckman if required; in a team like Freo that would likely require Lobb, Taberner or Treacy to go down injured / out of form before he plays (we won't play him as a fourth tall, and I doubt he will play as a defender unless the injury list is arms length). His endurance is really good so the alternating role would not be too bad for him, and as a ruckman he can get around the ground pretty well all day, so is suited to an initial utility role. Otherwise he is mainly playing CHF for Peel in this scenario until Lobb moves on or Taberner retires or similar.
  • Amiss probably plays as a forward pocket early on with stints at a little more half forward perhaps; someone commented that he has aspects of his game that make him look like a really tall Bailey Fritsch and I can totally see him playing that kind of role as a deep mobile / agile speedy forward pocket in that same kind of way initially; doing opportunist things but also being able to take a mark on a lead in a conventional tall forward way. In a Freo team he is probably competing for a spot with any non-performing small, medium or tall forward; but his immediate direct competition is probably again Treacy / Sturt / Frederick / Switowski / Shultz or injury replacement for Taberner. I can see him having the same kind of performance endurance issues to say a Frederick though, where Frederick had lots of impact initially this season and then just got worn down as the consequential games took their toll.
* Please note I said initially - over time they can all theoretically become key position.

I don’t see why these guys can’t be KPPs when they play next season. Treacy was and we drafted him as a rookie.

Do I expect any of them to play round one? No.

Do I except a KPP who was drafted top ten to play a few games as a KPP throughout their first season? Yes.
