I find the whole " is player X an upgrade on player Y" interesting.

Whether it's a KPP, defender, mid or forward, essentially the draft is to bring in elite talent to one day take over from a declining/retiring player, or upgrading a current player, within time.

So no matter who you like through this draft class, don't ignore talent to reach for a perceived need

True, but the deeper you go through a standard chart of who is 'best available' the less 'talent' that player will have and will be far from the 'elite' player we are striving for. Some People either ignore that reality or seem to magically think it will pan out perfectly if we stick strictly to form and/or reputation as a means of making our selections. I hope some of our selections will appear like a 'reach' to some people or I don't think we are doing it right. In other words, 'potential' is a large part of it.

We certainly differ on Hollands and Hotton. I see limited hurt factor in Hollands, polar opposite to Hotton

Phillipou is a naturally better player than both, but as stated previously, I have go-home concerns. So if he was to slide to our pick, I would let him to continue to slide

Rating will always be discussed in 3 ways, reach, just, slider, until of course when they start producing at the next level.
We would be silly to let Philipou go at 10 if he is still there, fills a geninue need and is definitely rated between 6-11 range.
We need to back in our environment & where we are now at as club to make our club attractive to be at, this is very different to JHF.

It's all relative to where and what you see the player becoming at the next level, not so much what they are producing now and certainly not where phantom drafts have them falling

And not one single talent identifier has a strike rate better than 2 of 3 picks, even less in terms of picking the best player available at each selection.

It's no different to JHF or any player that has the potential or indicated to leave to be around family and friends

If Phillipou wants to be around family, he can have mine...

Adelaide is a 1hr plane trip away, very different to going to WA or Brisbane.
If you are aiming to be a professional footballer not sure how you can have that mindset particularly when the two SA clubs sold off their early selections.

Id still like my club to back themselves in, I don’t really get the whinging when players say they don’t want to move states, it’s an honest answer that represents an ideal scenario, the amount of times I’ve heard players state they planned to move back home and stayed when looking back on their career is, a lot.

Leaving a club to move back home is relatively rare if your a Melb Club, especially in the JHF and Jackson case, usually you get more service.

It’s not whinging, it’s primordial, basically human existence is parochial and attached to customs, rituals in general, there are some variations but pretty simple really.
if a player wants to remain within the confines and security of these parameters, narrow or broad it’s their individual choice & prerogative, should be respect and safeguarded, always.

Sorry, you mis interpreted what I meant. I don’t get the whinging from supporters when players say, they don’t want to move states.

Given a choice, most would want to stay in their home state, they are just being honest.

It's really no different in the eyes of these kids, that have a strong desire to remain at home

Clubs are more mindful of the go home factor with draftees than ever before.

Phillipou is an immense talent and I wouldn't be upset if we drafted him, but I would be pissed if he left after 2 years, especially given all clubs know he is a flight risk

Is Phillipou's unreliability common knowledge amongst recruiters, or is it more 'any talented kid from another state' scenario, do you think?

If we want to draft him, we need to give him the full Carlton-SA history experience of how successfully we've cultivated strong bonds with legendary SA recruits over the years such as Kernahan (Captain 11 years), Bradley (games record holder) etc.

Phillipou you too could be emulating Sticks... what more incentive do you need. :D

Reminds me of some of RD's family gags.

I’d back any of the big clubs in Melbourne to keep the interstate kids they want to keep the overwhelming majority of the time.

Should be no fear factor for our club at all.

You mean like Jackson, Clark, Kelly, Dawson and countless others all of which were at strong, stable clubs? Or going the opposite way like Cerra, Tarranto, Hopper?

Dunkley in his draft year, advised clubs that if a non Melbourne club bid on him, the Swans would match it, as they were the only destinations he would feel comfortable. Now, with family in QLD, he is heading to that family support.

It's become more of a concern for all clubs.

Nothing to do with fear factor, it's about managing a probability or a possibility. Why risk it, unless he is undeniably ahead of others in the draft class

I really couldn't say whether Phillipou does a JHF, Cerra or Amon, but the industry "feel", is that he is a flight risk

Yep - we haven't lost a player we wanted to keep since Gibbs (when we were a rabble) and while there are a handful of examples of players leaving strong, stable VIC clubs to go home there are many, many more that don't. Back the club to create a welcoming, supportive and successful environment and in most cases it will lead to buy-in and loyalty.

The 1st SA pick is Adelaide at 23 and then Port at 33 - he knows by now he's leaving SA
