I really don't think we need more elite half back flankers that we can't transition into other positions.
I tend to agree with your thoughts but this is a very weak draft and sometimes you need to think outside the box just like Fremantle did with Mundy and they ended up with a superstar captain

Hasn’t posted a bad game to date.

Under ager who averaged 24 and kicked 25 goals last year and missed all of August and played 3 games in the SANFL against men.

He’s the best of this years mob.
He’s the most talented with the highest ceiling, December birthday. But he has been inconsistent and can plod.

When Phillipou is at his best, he is a superstar who puts on splendid performances akin to "The Bont." However, like Marcus Bontempelli, there is quite a gap between his best and worst. At his best, he is turning the game on its head and being the most unstoppable thing since the atomic bomb. At his worst, he is, unfortunately, just a lump of coal who waltzes around like he doesn't want to be there. He has all the potential in the world, but the difference between his best and worst is currently too far apart; he is far too inconsistent, and I'm not sure if he'll be driven enough to fulfil his potential. Is Phillipou a risk worth taking? Yes. Is he who I believe Hawthorn needs? Not necessarily. He would fill a need on our team. He could be the superstar midfielder we need who can win games off his boot. Nevertheless, I continue to think Cam Mackenzie is the man we need. Mackenzie would provide us with the class, speed, and decision-making that we have been lacking for the last half a dozen years. I would still be ecstatic if we drafted Mattaes. But Mackenzie is the person we require, which is why I have been fervently advocating for us to select him for the past month and a half.

A lot of that may be true for Phillipou, but I don't think I've ever seen Bont stand around 'like a lump of coal' waltzing around like he doesn't want to be there. My favourite player in the competition outside of Hawthorn, and for good reason.

I see Phillipou as the biggest risk of all the players being talked about for our 1st pick.

Would be ballsy to take him but I'm all aboard if we go that way.

Can anyone name some players that had similar doubts on their consistency at u18s but supremely talented?

Knightmare said similar to you a few months back and was torn apart for it. Seems a lot of opinions have changed on this kid. He look a real match winner.

so you think its going to beMackenzie, Clark or Phillipou? Do you have a preference?

I think so. Although if Gold Coast do skip Humphrey I firmly believe he's ours.

You can make a case for all 3 of those players.

Personal preference is Mackenzie > Phillipou > Clark.

I just personally view Mackenzie as the safest option and also one that best suits our current midfield group and game style.

I'm sold.

Me too...... Until tomorrow when I change my mind to Mackenzie..... and then think about Tsatas or Humphrey the day after.

Draft day needs to happen already.

In all seriousness Phillipou seems like he has the most upside of the options likely to fall to us - versatile, tall, quick, strong overhead, nice skills off both feet, can kick goals from 55+. Bring him home.

I'm:

Tsatas / Phillipou (can't decide. It's Phillipou at the moment, but likely Tsatas again by lunch)
Mackenzie
Clark / Humphrey

I agree with the bolded part, but then I think of the potential of those I first named & I'm back to where I started...

This is my take on our 1st draft pick candidates??
Tsatas if available we just have to take him ! We need that mix of inside and especially his outside leg speed ! I would push that button before anyone else could if he is available.
Phillipou would be my next pick that big midfielder with his forward mix and love his overhead marking ability!I do worry that his over confidence could be a negative. I prefer a lad that is quietly confident.
McKenzie would be my next pick I like his spread from congestion and his precision by foot .
Ginbey would be next looks a contested beast with speed and his foot skills to me look better than Humphrey’s.
Clark I just cannot see comparisons with Joel Selwood from my limited knowledge and his kicking is good but looks to go the short option all the time ??
Humphrey may be a great mark and a powerful athlete but his kicking looks below par and to me that is where you can lose a lot of games you have to be able to finish!
The Roughy is Jefferson in case we decide to grab a big forward??

In the new Humphrey video They keep cutting away just before you see where the kick lands and the couple of kicks you do see are cherry picked to make it look like he can kick because the kid can’t kick other than that he’s a great player. maybe Mitchell thinks he can fix it but maybe we should just pick somebody who can kick

Still reckon GC take him anyway.
