That's the problem with all these discussions. No one knows what players are being paid. And how much a player is being paid is critical in a salary cap sport.
The only thing we know for certain is that Geelong and Hawthorn players always take pay cuts to play there ......

Yeah I'm not sold on either Amartey or McLean being genuine long term prospects. Would be very glad to be proven wrong but I don't see it.

Yeah, I'm not sold on them individually either, but I think there's a case to be made that complementary forwards can produce a greater result as a sum, than the individual parts. Not to be forgotten is Heeney, and as Parker gets older, him. Papley etc.
Looking at 2012, we won a flag with a forward line that on paper didn't really look world-beating. We had a young Reid, Goodes spent more time there, LRT played a role, then we had Jetta lead the goalkicking, plus McGlynn and a bunch of midfielders kicking 20+ goals. That might be our avenue going forward. Don't have Buddy kicking 50+, but a host of players around the 20-40 mark (Heeney (40-50), Papley (30-40), Reid, the 3 younger KPFs, Hayward might be good for 20-30), working together to get an even contribution.
Don't get me wrong, as I said, I'm not sold on McLean or Amartey being guns individually, and we're a far better prospect at a flag with Buddy imo, it's not all doom and gloom though.

quite ironic that our leading goal kicker in a premiership season was a wingman who went 0-19 or thereabouts in his first 20 or so shots at goal

I don't think it's a stretch to say he probably should have had the order of Australia medal that year too.

A reminder that last year's premiership
forward line was Fritsch (who isn't even 190cm), McDonald (who is basically just a swingman), Brown (who most on this board didn't even rate when we could get him for SFA), and Jackson (who was 20).
Their goals for the year were 59, 33, 25 and 16 respectively.
And yet they won the most dominant premiership in a decade.
You don't need a star-studded forward line - though with the likes of Heeney, Papley and, yes, potentially McDonald, we may already have that. You just need a cohesive group that functions well with quality supply from the mids, of which I think we will have.

Amartey has come a long way this year and has bulked up and added decent pressure ot his game. He is

Yeah, I'd still like us to pick up a KPF or a swingman over the next draft or two, preferably as early as possible. Once Buddy, Reid go, and Hickey (thus needing Ladhams to be no.1 ruck), it'd be nice to have a depth/developing KPF behind Logan, McLean, Amartey assuming they all stay and are in the 22.

Personally I have never seen Amartey or McLean being good enough to lock down a permanent kpf spot over the long term.
Mclean has skill but he is slow and lacks agility and Amartey while he has improved his forward work is not a highly skillful forward and doesnt do enough around the ground.
I think they are in similar positions where they need to play as forward/rucks so that when they arent kicking goals they are still contributing like Reid has done.

Footy news has suddenly gone quiet on the crows camp
Fox and Reid aren't all that surprising. Fox has been solid every time he plays, joke he got dropped for the GWS final. Reid good last year, has been best 22 in many top 4 sides, biggest surprise is he's stayed healthy.
Stephens was a top 5 pick who's taken a nice step forward. If somebody told me at the start of the year that he was going to break into the 22 and play some decent football then I wouldn't have been blown away. I'd be blown away if Amartey or Mclean (let alone both!) are "pillars of the best forward line in the league".
Clarke has surprised me, I thought the coaches had given up on him. But he's a solid role player fulfilling a niche as a tagger. He's not a "pillar of the best forward line in the league"

I'd love for McLean and Amartey to cement spots in our side, but to be perfectly honest, I've not seen enough yet to suggest they can be consistent best 22 players, let alone pillars of the best forward line in the comp.
Hope they can prove me wrong, but I think that's an ambitious prediction.
Realistically, I'd see one of them becoming a best 22 lock a win.

I would love for the club to get creative, our two first plus next year's first for either norths or west coast top pick.
The 4 first rounders over 2 years if done correctly would improve them alot more than a single top pick would.
And for swans, the squad is bursting with young talent and adding more only causes bigger problems. One top pick is easier to integrate into the team than 3 first rounders over 2 years.
And the state of evolution the team is in, we are in win now more. No point have too many 18 year olds that won't contribute to the next flag

McDonald replaces Franklin (as we have seen when Franklin isn't there)

Still have Heeney as a hybrid marking/ground ball player who can push up the ground. Hayward similar but more outside than Heeney for stoppages
