If you are big Melbourne club (with the all the advantages that brings) + you have been at the bottom of the ladder for 20 years - you should have a deep midfield by now.

Correct and the fact they have remained a destination club even when at the bottom of the ladder.

One has to wonder about player development? Culture? Does not seem to me to be a club that is going anywhere despite first round picks for the last decade.

It is almost impossible to be as consistently bad as Carlton and Essendon have been for twenty years.

Hewett & Cerra are unbelievably good pick-ups for Carlton. That's the kind of off-season that can change the fortunes of a club in the space of a single year (see: Richmond's 2016 off-season), and considering they already have the best young gun in the competition, one of the best key forwards, one of the best key defenders, and a new coach, they will do well this year. That is enough to make finals in the 2022 competition.

My hot water system blew its top(literally) water spilling out the top. The plumber came and installed the new system. Great bloke and a Carlton supporter. Best two hours of conversation I have had in the last 25 years. You know it is good when your conversation has no gaps. New ideas get unanimous replies as does his. I told him about Hewett and he had no idea, I said this bloke never plays a bad game and will become a favorite of yours.

On paper, Carlton should be a top 4 threat.

I'll bet the deal with George was settled quite early on, when everything seemed hunky dory with Dawson. I'll also bet that Dawson changed his mind fairly late.
Nah. I reckon we would still have farewelled George.

Yep can't see them winning one with a brand new coach. But you never know down the road. Hewett, Walsh, Cerra, Cripps... that is a scary good midfield, and I have always believed midfields get you into contention. From there, you need everything else to work as well.

The problem is that I think we are trying to replace one with Heeney, but it's the wrong one.

But let's see how the season goes.

Well to be fair, the last full season Hewett played in position, our coaches voted him a top 2 player. Top 7 the year before that, and top 5 the year before that.

Whether he was a top 10 player or not can never really be categorically proven one way or the other, but he has as much claim to that status as anyone.
