Think the 2 year deal would have been pretty friendly for us given what he would have commanded a couple of seasons ago. No real issues with that and seeing if he could bounce back but he hasn't so as long as we prioritise others ahead of him then I'm fine with him as depth. If someone offers to take him off our hands then that's fine too.
Is Rankine pretty concrete? It's been a pretty good 48 hours on the rumour/trading front...
Crouch...out
Rankine...in
That's a win in my view
Could it be Roo stepping down?Depends on what's been happening in the background .....it's patently obvious, Matts Management has been canvassing options for next year
The Club could have let the whole scenario work to a logical conclusion .....something's happened in the Crows inner sanctum, which has been the catalyst for the announcement
Rendell believes Stone should be playing midfield & is the player the Crows should be trading inNot sure Hamilton and Stone are going to play their best footy in the midfield, Hamilton I like as a running defender with his endurance and penetrating kick and Stone more likey as a forward I think?
Superb analysis .......isn't this so much better & interesting, than simply saying he's s***tIt’s not the sheer numbers that are the concern for me, it’s the contested possession rate that worries me.
Laird wins 44.8% of his possessions contested.
Crouch at his peak in 2017 was operating at 40.5%, that’s dropped to 33.9%.
Crouch is averaging 4 tackles per game, Laird is at 8.1.
If you’re argument is that Matt would be better if he was the number one guy, how do you explain Keays or Berry?
I think a fair comparison to Matt is Jarryd Lyons, like Matt, he has someone ahead of him in the pecking order (Neale) after being the number one guy for much of last year, like Matt he’s relatively slow, and like Matt he isn’t blessed with a great kick.
Yet he has a contested possession rate of 44.7, he kicks more than he handballs, his clearance numbers are elite he averages 120 more metres gained despite having 6 less disposals on average and he tackles more.
It’s clear that Matt’s skill set is no longer compatible with our team, he isn’t doing enough grunt work to justify a place as an inside mid, and he certainly doesn’t have the skills or the mindset to be an outside mid. I still think he’s a good footballer and I hope he finds a team that can use him well. But he’s now been dropped 4 times by Nicks and he hasn’t addressed these glaring issues, so it’s clear his time with us has come to an end.
We offered a relatively cheap deal to a former All-Australian in the hope he could get fit and be a valuable contributor, instead of losing him to FA for nothing. It hasn’t worked out, so now we’ll look to see if another club can make use of his talents, and we should get a pick for it, that’s hardly deplorable list management. He was picked in round one and remained when Laird returned so clearly the club thought he was best 22. And it’s certainly not poor treatment of Matt, he was a free agent, if a better deal was available to him he could’ve taken it.
The only way it’s deplorable is if it was not communicated to Matt what Nicks needed from him on field, that may be the case but we’re yet to hear anything about that.
No ....IMO still odds on to sign at GC ....has knocked back a very lucrative ESS dealIs Rankine pretty concrete?
No. It could be as simple as Nick's and the club telling Matt to explore his options for next year as we can't guarantee AFL gamesCould it be Roo stepping down?
ORNo. It could be as simple as Nick's and the club telling Matt to explore his options for next year as we can't guarantee AFL games
It's most likely come from Matt or his manager
Unless his thinking is that he will only leave the Suns if its to go home.. and wouldnt even consider going to another state. No ....IMO still odds on to sign at GC ....has knocked back a very lucrative ESS deal
ESS in desperate need of a player of Rankine's type too .....so understandable why they chased hard
He was a player we thought could have SOME value and no club wanted to sign him. We got him for far less than we had been paying. My answer to that is why re-sign him if 12 months down the track he's not a required player despite as late as a fortnight ago ot therabouts according to Nicks he was very much a required player....deplorable list management .
No such thing as pretty concrete...although blown aggregate does not look too badIs Rankine pretty concrete?
That was my initial thought too, that MC wanted to know where he stood and Nicks gave an honest answer.OR
Could it be with Matt about to become a father ....his Management has approached the Club about a Contract extension ....and been told no ....might even have been said "At This Stage"
I'm just tickling the ivories here on possible reasons
Source? No ....IMO still odds on to sign at GC ....has knocked back a very lucrative ESS deal

I did, you need to take me off ignore, you’re missing outHe was a player we thought could have SOME value and no club wanted to sign him. We got him for far less than we had been paying.
He either came back strong and we got a bargain, or he didn't and we would cut him loose.
BTW - why is no one commenting how ridiculous that story sounded? Not being offered a contract, oh wait he already has one?
MELB Media over the weekend .....can't remember whether it was SEN gameday, or a media article .....I read / listen to so manySource?

Definitely said, Rankine has knocked back a very lucrative ESS offer and will stay at the Gold Coast
Here's the article I was referring too ...Unless his thinking is that he will only leave the Suns if its to go home.. and wouldnt even consider going to another state.
Happy to stay at the suns but also happy to go home.. depends which one offers him more coin.. doesnt give a s**t about more coin on offer to go to melbourne based team thus didnt even look at the bombers offer..
Correct .....July 7th the article was dated ....4 games to go, is there a rush on Rankine's behalf to sign immediately ?That’s was 3 weeks ago. And we’re still waiting
Theres nothing new in that though.. McClure has assumed though that just because Izak knocked back the bombers offer that instantly means he’s staying at the Suns..Here's the article I was referring too ...
AFL trade news: Essendon reportedly table “mammoth” deal to Suns gun Izak Rankine
In-form Suns forward Izak Rankine is tipped to extend his stay in Queensland, and in doing so will knock back a reported "mammoth" offer from Essendon.
The Bombers have recently emerged as keen suitors for the Gold Coast gun, who is yet to re-sign with the Suns beyond 2022.
Despite any external advances, reports suggesting Rankine will re-sign have only continued to grow, with the West Adelaide product expected to sign on the dotted line and add to his three-year career in the Sunshine State.
While a done deal is seen as imminent, 3AW's Sam McClure has revealed that Essendon have tabled a long-term deal in to Rankine, hoping to shift his attention to a potential move to Victoria.
“Izak Rankine is staying at Gold Coast which is great news for them,” McClure said.
“The Bombers were hugely interested in him and depending who you talk to… there'd be people up north saying Essendon offered a huge and mammoth five-year deal to Izak Rankine.
“$800,000 per season are the numbers that have been thrown around when you talk to clubs and industry figures, but Essendon are adamant that is not correct.
“It’s always difficult to know what is right and what is beaten up – particularly when a player has told a club he is not coming – so it’s all hard to know but all I can say is Izak Rankine is going to stay at the Gold Coast Suns which is really good news.”

Not so, according to McClure .....sounds pretty definitive to me ....you'd have to be a conspiracist to think it's not happeningTheres nothing new in that though.. McClure has assumed though that just because Izak knocked back the bombers offer that instantly means he’s staying at the Suns..
My point is that just because he knocked back the bombers doesnt mean he’s staying at the suns at all..
It could simply mean that Izak would never ever consider moving to melbourne regardless of the money on offer..
“Izak Rankine is staying at Gold Coast which is great news for them,” McClure said.
Yeah… Cause McClure’s never been wrong before..Not so, according to McClure .....sounds pretty definitive to me ....you'd have to be a conspiracist to think it's not happening
beat me to it!!!Yeah… Cause McClure’s never been wrong before..
