Seems a well executed backflip by Kane, on comments he made a few days ago .....I give it an 8 / 10 for style and execution

Kane Cornes lays out the case for Adelaide playing finals in 2023

Adelaide captain Rory Sloane believes his club can play finals next season – but can they?

Kane Cornes has attempted to lay out the case for the Crows, believing with a bit of luck in close games, an easy fixture and an improved forward line, they can potentially get to the 12-13 win threshold.

“Your automatic response is ‘he’s dreaming, Rory Sloane is absolutely dreaming’, that would be my belief, that they’re unlikely to play finals, but if they are set to play finals, how can you build a case around it?” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast.

“No one would’ve said Collingwood would go from 17th to 4th and no one would’ve said the previous year that

Melbourne would’ve gone from outside the eight to the premiership.

“There’s surprises every year, Sydney right down the bottom in 2020, play finals in 2021. It can happen.

“For it to happen, this is how you can build the case for Adelaide to play finals next year.

1. “They’re going to get the easiest draw of all-time. That’s the important point. They’re going to get a very favourable draw because they’re finishing near the bottom of the ladder. :whitecheck:

2. “12 of your games are at home. If you can get an easy draw and 12 games at home and you win seven of those 12, you’ve only got to pinch five more.

3. “I like the forward line. I think it has the capability to be a dangerous forward line in the competition.

Darcy Fogarty is an AFL player and after another pre-season, hopefully the combination of him and Taylor Walker works. They’ve been too tall in that forward line, I think they now have a structure that works.

“Fogarty, Walker, Riley Thilthorpe with another pre-season as the third tall/backup ruckman, Josh Rachele and Wayne Milera in the front-half, I think that’s a lot to work with talent wise.

“I’d like one more to come in and support them. A player, ironically, like Charlie Cameron would be awesome to cause some chaos and another finisher. I don’t think there’s one of that quality on their list.

4. “The Adelaide playing group is clearly tough and competitive. They’re hard to play against. Which is half the battle. Look at Essendon and how easy they are to play against. Look at the Giants. They’re an easy team to play against at times.

“Adelaide aren’t. They’ve got it in their DNA. They’re tough, they’re competitive, they have consistent spirit and consistency of effort and if they can maintain that, they’re going to be in more games than not.

5. “Three games this year they’ve lost by under five points. Flip the script there and all of a sudden you’re on eight wins this year, you’ve got two more winnable games going home, there’s 10, and then you’re going ‘okay, we only need to find two more wins next year’.

6. “I like their key defenders. I like Nick Murray, I love Jordon Butts and I like Tom Doedee as the interceptor. They have two key pillars that can at least combat the best one-two punches in the game. They have the capability to do that.

“And then you have pick three in the draft. Go and get a player like Nick Daicos – find one! If you can get a player that can instantly impact and a couple of other pieces in the trade period, there you have it.

“The midfield is a complete and utter mess and I put that solely down to recruiting errors. I don’t know how to fix it other than to keep rewarding players like Jake Soligo, give him more wing minutes because he looks the goods.

“Start drafting players who aren’t all the same player, that would be a strong message to (recruiter) Hamish Ogilvie.”

7. What Cornes & all commentators are unaware of though ....is the talent coming thru the SANFL ....it's a factor why commentators get ladder position predictions so wrong every year ...... Cook & Pedlar

No ....IMO still odds on to sign at GC ....has knocked back a very lucrative ESS deal

ESS in desperate need of a player of Rankine's type too .....so understandable why they chased hard
I feel like we are in far more need.

You'd hope our offer was equally as lucrative

If you're spending big $$$ though ......with Rachelle, do we need Rankine ....or would we be better off chasing a big bodied explosive Midfielder ....which is the greater need ?

Maybe the answer to this lies in who we take at the draft this year. If we are locked in on Phillipou - he is over 190cms and has what looks to be a very high ceiling as an inside / outside goalkicking mid. If we also bring Rankine in, does that then free up Rachele to transition more into a mid that can go forward? or even do we think Rankine eventually can transition towards a wing as an outside mid? - We know Rankine has been inconsistent but we also know he has a very high skill level and right now as a club we are crying out for highly skilled players

Edit - not that he is that tall, but I am hopeful that a full preseason into Pedlar can get him in the side next year as a powerful burst mid that can also hit the scoreboard. Hopefully we look very different through the middle next year with some high end young talent running through there regularly

Fair points 👍

I haven't .....Stone's been injured a lot of late .... I just relayed Rendell's thoughts, he judged him on his Draft year, whilst working for COLL
I saw him as a slower version of Brayden Cook with a better tank. Like Cook I see him as a wing/half forward as their best role?

Why would GWS want to trade him given he's shown promise and he wouldn't be on big coin... doesn't help their salary squeeze much?

“The midfield is a complete and utter mess and I put that solely down to recruiting errors. I don’t know how to fix it other than to keep rewarding players like Jake Soligo, give him more wing minutes because he looks the goods."
Isn't Soligo one of the recruiting errors making the midfield a complete and utter mess by drafting the same type of players? If we took your advice Kane, we wouldn't have drafted Soligo.

Stone's on Contract IIRC ....Rendell saw him as a Midfielder, that we could entice out with a good Contract

Again, I haven't seen him at all

You wouldn't like him in the midfield, he ain't quick, good overhead mark though which I'm sure you like

Is there a choice this year?
Yep… i agree with WW that we need that explosive big bodied mid and would love to spend the money there.. but, is there one available thats willing to come to Adelaide..

It doesnt look like there is..

But if by some chance one did become available.. why cant we have both that bloke and Rankine!

Not like we havent got the coin..

It's my drum to beat .....I believe strongly in contested marking midfielders .....look at the difference Dawson has shown up around the Wings .....sets up the run and receive, and a more organised offense

Is there any intention at all?

These are obviously leaks from GCS, not from the player or the agent
Is there any evidence to suggest the story isn't true though ....other than the fact Rankine hasn't immediately re-signed

No ....IMO still odds on to sign at GC ....has knocked back a very lucrative ESS deal

About to get Alwyn Davey as a FS late first rounder

Possibly both the Davey boys .....that's the thinking at ESS (via intel from a very long standing ex Coach)

Bring in Rankine and Phillipou. Another preseason for Berry Schoey and Pedlar we start to look alright. Rankine could definitely have some bursts on ball and Rachele will build that way as well

Ok. Which one of you posters is Kane Cornes. Those quotes are effectively copy and pasted of the last few months of discussion on these boards.

Whilst it is a hobby that I endorse, bagging Kane for these comments is stoopid.

He has hit the nail on the head of our gaps.

We'll get both. Jayden is just as talented, if not slightly more so, as Alwyn however two ACL's have killed his draft value. Jayden is also the more stereotypical small forward while Alwyn is a bit more of a Shai Bolton forward/mid hybrid. It's just a question of if he gets bid on late in the ND or we get to add him directly as a rookie.

All of which lends me to being surprised at Dodoro's hard on for basically any indigenous small forward who might be available both last season and this year. Especially as we took a small forward in Menzie during the MSD as well.

Probably 2-3 years to develop a player to a decent level (assuming they make it) once drafted and he hasn’t wanted to wait that long. One of the biggest gaps on your list so why not spend the money to get a plug and go option

True, especially as we're flush for cash at the moment so bringing someone in and front-loading their contract would be the way to go. Especially as our second rounder is effectively for sale given the aforementioned Davey bid.

The other area we need to address is our midfield depth, which is what lead me to this thread in the first place given the Matt Crouch reports. Would be a handy depth for us.
