True, especially as we're flush for cash at the moment so bringing someone in and front-loading their contract would be the way to go. Especially as our second rounder is effectively for sale given the aforementioned Davey bid.

The other area we need to address is our midfield depth, which is what lead me to this thread in the first place given the Matt Crouch reports. Would be a handy depth for us.

Have you guys given up on Aaron Francis?

Seems like it. Would be very much worth a crack for you guys. Supremely talented, however we did him no favours playing him as a KPD and then a KPF when he clearly showed his best role is/was as an intercept defender.

Unless his thinking is that he will only leave the Suns if its to go home.. and wouldnt even consider going to another state.

Happy to stay at the suns but also happy to go home.. depends which one offers him more coin.. doesnt give a s**t about more coin on offer to go to melbourne based team thus didnt even look at the bombers offer..
Is it correct Rankine was a Crows fan growing up? Also, did he actually say he'd like to play for the Crows before being drafted?

If so, we're a big chance as we alone have this advantage. It would take a very superior offer to dissuade him.

Adelaide fan and trained with Adelaide prior to getting drafted
In that case, I'm excited about the possibility.
Rankine on a forward flank compared to the current crop will add more goals for us. Pure and simple. Higher scores. He and Rachele will get Adelaide Oval absolutely buzzing oneday. Soon I hope...

Not sure if Rankine has the talent, skill and flair to command Ned's position - I think he has that spot sown up for another 100 games.

Massive adelaide fan..

Yes.. he did get “caught” out in a radio interview before the draft saying he’d love to stay in adelaide and play for the crows.. aparently got a bit of a clip from his manager for saying it too.. but to be fair the radio interviewer was goading him with some nicely loaded questions about it all!…

Matt Crouch reportedly furious with our decision!

Maybe the answer to this lies in who we take at the draft this year. If we are locked in on Phillipou - he is over 190cms and has what looks to be a very high ceiling as an inside / outside goalkicking mid. If we also bring Rankine in, does that then free up Rachele to transition more into a mid that can go forward? or even do we think Rankine eventually can transition towards a wing as an outside mid? - We know Rankine has been inconsistent but we also know he has a very high skill level and right now as a club we are crying out for highly skilled players

Edit - not that he is that tall, but I am hopeful that a full preseason into Pedlar can get him in the side next year as a powerful burst mid that can also hit the scoreboard. Hopefully we look very different through the middle next year with some high end young talent running through there regularly
Rachele is a natural goal kicker and should play 80% Forward 20% mid .

We have enough young mids of his size that we need to work through the guts.

Either way it’s not worth talking about, the earliest we’ll be a chance of getting Cox (if we’re even a chance at all) would be when he’s a FA in 2024. Gives Butts and Murray two years to show their development and eventual wares
Actually I'd say the opposite. Clubs are learning that letting a player go through to the end of their contract, and becoming a free agent, is not good for the club in trade negotiations. It opens up too many options for the player and they also have the ability to walk to the Draft and unofficially nominate where they want to go.
Whereas... clubs are getting a much better bag of compensation in a trade when they make a deal with 1yr or 2yrs to go on the contract.
So with Brennan Cox - I agree with you that he's important at Freo. I agree that he's worth more than the players we're wanting to trade out of the Crows... but it doesn't mean we shouldn't be on the phone trying to get him. If Fremantle think he's a chance of going home to Sth Australia 1yr later anyway, they may want to see what they can get in a trade now. They also have a relative bounty of backmen so whilst he is important, he's not irreplaceable either.

Want to hear something very frustrating?

Back in 2015 we traded a future 2nd round pick to GWS for Curtly Hampton

That future pick ended up in Fremantle's hands. They selected Sean Darcy.
Pick after that? Josh Battle
After that? Tom Stewart
After that? Brennan Cox

Yikes

Sounds familiar to Tom Doedee

Players on our list who won't be there in pre-season 2025:
Walker
Sloane
Frampton
Himmelberg
McAsey
Davis
Borlase
Smith
Seedsman
Brown
Murphy
Newchurch
Rowe
Strachan
Crouch

That's 15 players out of 45 on our list, or 33% - more than the 'few players' we need to finish our team according to the reports.

If we pick up 5 players this trade/ draft, we need 5 in 2023 and 5 in 2024.

The most immediate needs are:

  • a ruck this year to start developing - no more waiting with ROB and Strachan both 30 in 2025 pre season. Might need to trade one in.
  • another forward to replace Walker/ Himmelberg - Keelor?
  • KPD - replace Borlase/ Frampton/ McAsey fails
  • 2 more mids - replace Sloane and Crouch (first round 2022 and 2023)
  • a couple of small forwards - this can be done closer to 2024 (unless its Rankine)
  • another wing/ flankers - Seedsman, Smith
Players I've left off the list but who should be concerned and will probably be gone by 2026 unless they get a chance or show massive improvement:

McHenry
Jones
McPherson
Worrell
Turner
Hately
Sholl
Keays
Laird
McAdam

Another 9 players. My lists is based on my opinion of who are good enough to play in a premiership team or players who will be retired by then.

Left on our list are 19 players:

Thilthorpe
Fogarty
Butts
Murray
Hinge
Doedee
Dawson
Schoenberg
Cook
Milera
Berry
Gollant
Hamill
Pedlar
Soligo
Rachelle
Nankervis
Taylor
Parnell

LOL

Target Will Hayward as a midfielder fair dinkum Fireman Cornes you serious?

A forward that has averaged 1.2 goals a game across his entire AFL career?

I mean he's a handy player and would certainly be a handy addition...but midfielder?

Cornes suggested on Monday that the Crows should look to improve their midfield attributes, suggesting Sydney’s Will Hayward should be a trade target.

Yeah feeling his pain, I was furious too when they said they wouldn't draft me. Apparently 55 year old fat guys "aren't what we are looking for"
Ultimately Matt still has power as he is contracted and can stay on and play SANFL next year and wait for free agency. Its a year out of his AFL career but he can still pocket the money. But I would suggest here that if another club is interested, we would take minimum chips for him and free up a list spot which would be the priority with our list spots being tight atm i would have thought

Issue is that, from what I’ve heard, Isak’s manager is not too fond of the AFC after some poor dealings. Certainly doesn’t help the situation.

The video someone posted the other day he said betts was a mentor or something like that. Make of that what you will

Possible given he has the same management as Eddie Betts, Tyson Stengle and both Crouch brothers.
