In many ways it’s incumbent on us to find these types of people. Brayshaw, Serong, Young and Darcy all seem like they will end up being people who will take less than market value to help build sustained success. Most people lack the long term vision required to see this as an investment – in the club, their teammates and their own long term success.
Possibly. Any thoughts on why Serong isn't already extended? He is going to have big money thrown at him.

And any thoughts on the impact on bringing in a big dollar recruit like Jackson on the playing group if we are asking them to keep a lid n their salary expectations?

I think Serong wanted to give himself a chance to prove his future worth. I still think he would take less than his value to stay, but not less than his value as determined by his 2021 output. I’m sure he’ll sign once the dust settles after the trade period.

Part of a long-term mindset has to be an understanding that some players are going to get paid overs to come and make the team better. Richmond improved themselves by getting Lynch and Riewoldt needed to have the humility to accept a large pay disparity, despite fairly close contributions to the team.

One of the things that Geelong work in their favour is that many of their older players are set for life in the last parts of their careers. Hawkins could get a godfather offer for a couple of years, but I think his paycheck is modest given his standing. That is similar to Reiwoldt.

Asking younger players to play for less is a different challenge.

Unfortunately you can’t get all of the pieces through the draft, free agency and bargain trades. If we’re measuring success by premierships won, then it took until today for Geelong’s trade for Dangerfield to pay off – both in terms of what it cost to get him and what it has cost to pay him. Same goes for Cameron.
This is true, but they were both proven guns. Jackson isn't, he's all potential and hype,.

Geelong showing again today playing for unders is noble and required to deliver a flag

***** you Logue and Lobb, you’re both mercenaries and won’t be remembered after you leave the game

Also - key forwards… enough said

It's only logue, lobb is leaving because his partner lives in Melbourne.

Don’t think we can take one GF and use it to make any sort of list needs.

Swans simply didn’t turn up today.

That said. Clearly shows the need for contested ball. Brayshaw and Serong will continue t be massive moving forwards.

Yeah every year people try to learn lessons and copy. Then next 2 years it changes.

Win ball, use ball well, kick ball to players who kick goals.

I doubt we get a second rounder for Meek.

I’d personally be very disappointed if Freo traded a second rounder for a guy that’s played 15 games in 5 years.

He’s probably a potential no.1 ruck but hasn’t proven it yet. Plenty of similar rucks have been traded in the last five years and none have gotten a second rounder.

FWIW I don’t think it matters what trade gets done first as long as we hold our ground. Melbourne will have no power once Jackson nominates Freo. He’s only going to West Coast in the PSD, which gives Melbourne nothing.

Personally I think trading Logue and/or Lobb first might give us the opportunity to potentially get Jackson without trading next years first rounder. That’d be a bloody good result imo.

Meek is contracted. If the offer is lets say pick 45 it's not worth us pulling the trigger.

If we trade Meek for peanuts and he plays well for his new club and then Darcy or Jackson get injured we'll have egg on our face.

One of the reports suggested Meek is on about $300,000 and if he leaves his salary will roughly double. If you're offering a guy $600,000 and he's under contract you're parting with a second rounder.

Geelong beat the Pies by a kick and Collingwood don't have a gun key forward.

Honestly thought Cameron was almost invisible until the last quarter. Hawkins went pretty good though.

For me the game was won by midfield dominance. Not sure any of their mids bar perhaps Dangerfield would be on crazy money.

Hawkins kicking 2 goals in the first quarter from the ruck was massive. Makes Lobb expendable, he's never had that physical presence.

Ralph in the HS talking crap again.

HOW THE LOBB DEAL COULD GET DONE

Could Fremantle trading Rory Lobb to the Western Bulldogs for pick 29 unlock the Luke Jackson deal?

That is what he will be hoping as he remains in Melbourne awaiting movement on a trade the Dockers have said won’t happen.

Melbourne says it wants two first-rounders and a second-rounder or two picks within 10 (including one within the first seven picks) for Jackson.

But if the Dockers can’t find those early top-10 picks they could trade their first-rounder, future first-rounder and secure 29 from the Dogs for Lobb.

That deal will go down to the wire but it would also allow the Dockers to retain other picks to offer up to the Suns for Jeremy Sharp, who they are keen to acquire.

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin made clear on RSN Radio on Wednesday the Demons will play hard ball on Jackson.
if thats the case let west coast have him.

I remember when Brisbane demanded picks 16 and 20 for Mitch Clark and demons won by trading pick 12.

No Brisbane were wanting pick 16 we were trying to get away with only paying pick 20.

We stuffed around too long. Melbourne saw an opportunity offered Clark a stack more cash, suddenly Clark wasn't home sick anymore. Demons offered pick 12. Deal Done.

Seriously we were arguing between Sherridan & Crozier FFS 🤦‍♂️ Neither of which played in the 2013 GF. We all know Clark's mental health issues but could have things worked out differently if we had Clark partnering Pav on that day if we didn't try to be do clever a couple of years earlier. 😔

Yep..
Clarke's mental health issues started at the Melbourne FC. His partner dug all the gold she could carry then dynamited the mine so no one else could get any. This haggling was THE biggest mistake in our long history of draft / trade stupid. EPIC mistake that im 99% certain cost us a flag. Was gutted that happened at the time...and still am now. It stuffed both Freo and Mitch.

We are stronger off the field now for this to never happen. Sure their are some
similarities.
I’d say Henry is looking like having a career like Simpson if he doesn’t work
harder. But the other first rounders have been quality.
Talent identification is on the up, better trades and getting deals done without
Paying overs, or folding too soon,
The days of Gumbleton, Sylvia and Jack Anthony are over.

I am very dark about our future prospects. Our forward line is a joke and we're about to lose Lobb, seriously we can't lose out future first as there's a strong chance we miss the 8 next year.
Switta, Frederick, Amiss and Schultz.

There are at least 3 players there good enough to be best 22 in a top 4 side.

1 more kpf and a good pressure small forward who kicks 40 and we are fine. 😄

Hopefully we don't target needs too much and end up drafting a spud.

Danger was a bargain, 9 + 29 + Gore (potato). We'll pay more for Jackson.

Put this in the vent thread
That's not vent worthy. There is a very real chance we miss the 8 given the squad depth we are losing, Lobb's goals we are losing and the likelihood we won't get a god like injury run two years in a row.

We can almost afford to target needs though.

If we end up drafting a spud we at least tried rather than trend towards a predictable result (i.e. looking like a very decent side but falling short similar to 2013).

We’ll need to add some depth in midfielders, HBFs, KPDs etc. over the next few years but our days of spending our best draft capital on these positions should be put on hold for a while.

I think we’ve got at least four very good forwards on our list tbh. Frederick’s improvement this year to last was massive. Switta and Schultz showed heaps. Amiss is a special talent. These players don’t develop into guns overnight.

It was great, but I’ll continue to not understand the rules when Hawkins is involved.
Deadset can just shove his opponent out of the way in a ruck contest.
Darcy gets frees against.
Never understood the difference.
