List Mgmt. 2022 Mid-Season Draft

I thought Jake was playing some solid football and would be getting some games later in the year when finals were out of the question.

The already struggling Magpies have taken another knock.

What we DON'T need.

1. Undersized mid who then gets played as a small forward.
2. Undersized mid who then gets played as a small forward.
3. Undersized mid who then gets played as a small forward.

Narrator: And then Port drafted another undersized mid and played him forward.

Hope no-one reminds Ken that Sam Gray is available......

I liked the look of former Brisbane Lion Connor Ballenden for the Eagles in the sanfl game on the weekend. Strikes me as the sort of ruck option Port would look at. Had 22 disposals in the ruck.

Big unit 201cm and 102kg, will hunt the ball at ground level, reasonable agility for a big man, can find the ball and is a good set shot.

Has played key positions in junior footy. His dad represented South Africa in rugby union and mum represented New Zealand in athletics.

He's one of Port's nominated Covid top ups already.

From what I remember hearing about him when he was at the Lions, he's about as soft a big man as they come.

As much as I’d love a ruckman or key defender I think the reality of the mid season draft is that, if you are going to bother at all, you take the player with the best chance of making the level.

philthy05 any tall defenders overlooked in the draft or mobile undersized rucks who could convert to key defence?

RossFC you've seen Surman play defence, how has he looked? Too similar to Skinner? He has some AFL qualities, although he does have games where his hands appear to lack opposable thumbs.

I cannot agree with some of the arguments being put forward re the mid season Draft. As I see it the MSD is not a list building exercise although I concede it might be used as such, as I see it the primary function of a MSD is to plug any gaps that might develop in the first part of the year. When the MSD was introduced Gillion McLachlan even made the point that Port could have taken advantage of a MSD when Paddy Ryder and Angus Monfries were suspended for the 2016 season and we were forced to play with a reduced list. It seems that when the AFL introduced the MSD they clearly had a gap filling rather than a list building exercise in mind.

As our list stands atm there is one obvious archilles heel and we should be fixing it. If Hayes goes down we do not have a ruckman to take his place. In 2014 we made it through the season with one ruckman on our list and at the end of the season Ken Hinkley said, 'we dodged a bullet there'. Just two seasons later Paddy Ryder is suspended and Matt Lobbe is injured and we are forced to use Jack Trengove in ruck. Ken will probably not learn anything form any of that but he bloody well should. I concede that our chances of making the finals are slim but that doesn't mean we should concede defeat.

I do not see the point in looking at small forwards or midfielders as we have plenty on our list. In any case many of the names put forward will probably still be there next year and if we think they are worth a punt we could rookie list them. The real task is to find a ready to go ruckman who could be used at SANFL level and pressed into service if Sam Hayes goes down. Not an easy fix but it should be our priority.

Whether he be a mature ager from a state comp or a kid with some genuine size who missed out in the draft it's the best tall defender available for mine.
It's a definite no to a sub 180 cm midfielder, journeyman ruck, or bean pole kid who will take years ( if ever ) to develop.

Former Brisbane Lion Connor Ballenden can play ruck or key position and is 200cm tall.

Don’t really know, I tend to follow Sa under 18,s and under 16’s and a few sanfl games so don’t really see a lot of the mature agers from Sa and none of the ones from interstate.

There’s a Ryan Ayer’s I’ve seen mentioned as a tall key defender that would be considered in the msd. 19 yr old I think? I don’t know anything about him tho.

I can’t see us adding another skinner type prospect tho.

I was very keen on the msd when it looked like we might have a top pick… now, less so.

Caleb Lewis is a 196cm draft prospect rated in Sheahan's tall defender list last year, but wasn't drafted.

Is Clavarino at Sth Adelaide NFG?
197-198cm defender.
"Oscar will be able to bring some additional height to our backline and combined with his aerial ability will strengthen our defence" Said Senior Coach Jarrad Wright
"At 195cm Oscar will be a good replacement for Sam Skinner, and bolster our experienced backline with the likes of Jake Summerton, Matt Broadbent and Joey Haines."

I didn't realise he was one of the 20. He was impressive on the weekend and it didn't look like WWT have missed Redden this year given he has only played 1 game so far and Connor has played the other 5.

I know its only sanfl but he looked very athletic out there. As much as we both like Surman, I think Ballenden would be a better player at AFL level if we need an emergency ruck this year.

The state match on Sunday should be a good outing for recruiters looking at the mid season draft. McKenzie and O'neill probably have a fan club. Ballenden maybe as a need, but he was pretty poor at Brisbane and possibly Skinner is rated higher? I would just go for someone who might become a decent afl player. Nick Martin went in the pre season draft to Essendon this year and he's a gun. No idea how no club had picked him up? He just looked good straight away in the pre season trials.
