List Mgmt. 2022 Mid-Season Draft

Hugh Stagg for me, pretty good U18 year, prolific goal scorer as that high half forwarder , able to have spurts in mid. Powerful unit already for kid , really hard at it and ready to go body. Possibly bit rough around edges hence maybe why he didn't get picked up this yr. Reminds me a little of Zac Bailey from the lions , plays similar type role. Worth a punt I reckon.

philthy05 any tall defenders overlooked in the draft or mobile undersized rucks who could convert to key defence?

RossFC you've seen Surman play defence, how has he looked? Too similar to Skinner? He has some AFL qualities, although he does have games where his hands appear to lack opposable thumbs.
Surman isn't really a key defender, he'd just be playing there due to lack of options.

I reckon this season he's shown the most in the ruck. But if we are looking for short term cover for Hayes in the mid-season draft, there might be better out there than Surman.

Young Guns out and about again tomorrow at Princess Park.

Should we place Scott on the LTI also? Rule him out for the season (not sure if he can play SANFL in this instance?).

Then take two selections at the mid season draft?

We clearly need a tall KPD and a mid. We need a ruck but Scott won’t be available until at best the final 4 games of the year + finals.

Or is Scott more valuable with 3-4 games at the end of the season and maybe finals, to give Hayes a breather and us extra ruck cover?

We are short on Rucks. Hayes as much as he's going well is still likely to be a bit banged up at some point and need a break.

There’s really no benefit to taking a second player other than to strengthen the magpies for a couple of months, and there’s no way we do that.

The mid season drafts are usually 3-5 players deep, at most. In all likelihood we will be adding a mcintee level list clogger if we’re picking after the first few picks.

I’m all for taking 1 player, if there’s a worthwhile talent there, but there’s no way there would be 2 worthwhile players. We would just be clogging our list furthers

Yea fair call. Although you can give someone a six month contract still, so could pick up a Daniel Talia type (no not him, just meaning mature, ready to go type) ruck or key defender for six months to give us depth.

But agree it’s a shallow draft and not really a place to get good long term options outside of the first few picks and usually rucks.

Anyone know how you can watch today's state game? Cheers

Would be incompetent of us not to list Pasini as an official LTI, and hence elect to participate in the MSD.
But, you know - we are talking Port here

If we have spare list spots I can't see any reason why we wouldn't take as many players as we can. Worst case scenario they sit in the sanfl for the six month contract and support our young players. Best case they either impact at AFL level or show enough to earn a new contract. It's a zero opportunity cost decision.

If Lycett ain't gonna play for the rest of the season chuck him on the LTI.

Riley Knight had 37 disposals and 7 tackles in the state game. Just sayin' 😋

Casey Voss 29 disposals and 15 marks.

Ballenden is playing, has a dozen disposals and a goal but only a handful of hitouts.

SA won by 4 points. Eagles fans couldn't even get a vicarious win. 😉

Good game to watch. Casey Voss's disposals in the first half were just sublime at times - very impressive. I reckon he had a disposal assist in the chain of most of their goals.

I cannot agree with some of the arguments being put forward re the mid season Draft. As I see it the MSD is not a list building exercise although I concede it might be used as such, as I see it the primary function of a MSD is to plug any gaps that might develop in the first part of the year. When the MSD was introduced Gillion McLachlan even made the point that Port could have taken advantage of a MSD when Paddy Ryder and Angus Monfries were suspended for the 2016 season and we were forced to play with a reduced list. It seems that when the AFL introduced the MSD they clearly had a gap filling rather than a list building exercise in mind.

As our list stands atm there is one obvious archilles heel and we should be fixing it. If Hayes goes down we do not have a ruckman to take his place. In 2014 we made it through the season with one ruckman on our list and at the end of the season Ken Hinkley said, 'we dodged a bullet there'. Just two seasons later Paddy Ryder is suspended and Matt Lobbe is injured and we are forced to use Jack Trengove in ruck. Ken will probably not learn anything form any of that but he bloody well should. I concede that our chances of making the finals are slim but that doesn't mean we should concede defeat.

I do not see the point in looking at small forwards or midfielders as we have plenty on our list. In any case many of the names put forward will probably still be there next year and if we think they are worth a punt we could rookie list them. The real task is to find a ready to go ruckman who could be used at SANFL level and pressed into service if Sam Hayes goes down. Not an easy fix but it should be our priority.
We also had Jarred Redden on our list that year.

Josh Carmichael got an exemption to nominate. I read he was playing country football last year. He didn't look out of place in the state match and should have some upside as a mid forward.

Does Casey Voss have issues that could have clubs thinking he is high maintenance?

Just something I seem to remember seeing?

I read that here but haven't heard it anywhere else. So who knows?

The article below gives some background on Casey Voss. There do not seem to be too many huge injury concerns. Voss admits to being a 'late developer.' It seems that football has not been Voss' no1 priority as he has chosen to focus on an engineering degree rather than become a professional footballer. I know he nominated for last year's Draft but I am not sure that he nominated for any previous Drafts as he was focused on University which probably put some clubs off.

Casey Voss hasn't done too much wrong since he joined Sturt. He won a Reserves B&F then a League B&F and has now won a Fos Williams medal he obviously has inherited some football genes. With an Aussie Rules pedigree and an impressive CV at State level I think Voss is a good chance to get picked up in the Mid Season Draft not sure it will be by Port though.
