Happy to look at intercepting and/or lock-down type back flankers or back pockets. Cupboard is almost bare.

Sure but I don't typically consider them flankers if that's how they're played. When I say flankers i'm talking about the distributors and runners. General or third defenders who can intercept, lockdown and play on mediums and talls are a big need.

I think the issue would be he gets paid outside of the soft cap because he’s an indigenous coach, if he’s a player that money would go under the players cap?
Base wage for a rookie isn't included in the salary cap. Port rookied Goldsack even though he was only going to coach, so $80,000 of his salary wasnt included in either soft or salary cap. It might work out the same as the indigenous grant, if Jetta was on the rookie list.

Yes, given that any amount saved would not be great, and that Jetta is 32, it would make no sense at all for us to put him on our list, when (if we do pick up a player) that would mean wasting an opportunity to get someone who might have a long-term future at the club.

Agree. Has any club actually used this draft to target short term needs or injury cover? And he isn't even a short term need.

Hardly anyone, since the mid-season draft made a return in 2019, seems to have been picked up just as a short-term fill-in. Clubs have mostly used the draft to try and snare promising young/untried talent, rather than bring in older, journeyman types. There's been a few, including younger types, who've been quickly discarded, but it still doesn't look as if anyone ever takes a player they think they might only keep for a few months.

I still think it's highly likely we won't take anyone, though Kreuger's condition in 4 week's time will probably have a major say in things. If he is progressing well and aiming to get back late in the H&A season I wouldn't want the job of telling him "sorry son, but we don't want you to bother. We'd rather have a pick in the draft, so take it easy"! I know it's not quite as simple as that, but ...

Also probably depends on how highly they rate available players and how many they they're confident they'll cut at the end of the year. They're unlikely to pick someone and cut him after 3 months, so it isn't really a free hit, it costs you a rookie list spot and thus a rookie draft pick at the end of the year, with a bigger draft pool available.

I think they are similar but I don't think that's an issue. Our depth is poor both for key backs and third talls so I think Dean and Maibum can compete or coexist is the same team. It would be a replacement for Keane in essence.

If we were to look at something different Schlensog is the one. Athletic, up around 200cm, good in the air and below the knees, can go forward but a thin build.

Either could work for us.
Why only why do people keep pumping up Blake Schlensogs tyres? He's not athletic in that he's slow AF and sure as hell not slim. And people 'good below the knees' is such a lazy generic term anyone can just throw out there. Either was it all makes me think you've never seen him play because he's ver ordinary and not AFL and here you are saying he is.

The reason Schlensog gets talked up is because he went back to the WAFL and dominated. Schlensogs pace isn't his strength but I don't think it's an issue either in a similar way it isn't for Roughead. It's enough. I disagree he isn't athletic. He has a big leap and is agile. He is a strong intercept mark.

You may think describing him as good below the knees is lazy but i'd say it's pretty important for a defender to have clean ball handling below the knees. If you're not clean below your knees you get burned with ground balls, which is often where forward play ends up, with contested aerial play largely nullified these days.

I asked you a question earlier in the thread about how you would approach the draft if we have a pick. I'm still waiting on an answer for that one.

My approach to the mid season draft, add a player with some ability and a future and not a spud like Schlensog, a 200cm great below the knees player. Might be handy if he was great above the shoulders but you keep telling the punters he can play, just not AFL standard.

My favourite Pies VFL player since Gus Borthwick was lacing up the boots for us. If Fowler could add tackling to his repetoire he'd get himself drafted I reckon. He's already got the tricks and his pace is a weapon.

I really liked Borthwick as well, he gave it everything, though he never seemed like the type someone might draft. I think Fowler must be in with a real chance, and even though he doesn't really fill a list need for us, if we're taking a player I hope we end up with him.

The AFL has closed the loophole which helped Hawthorn swoop on jet hard nut Jai Newcombe in last year’s midseason draft.
Rival clubs were unhappy Newcombe nominated for last year’s midseason draft under ‘other terms’ which saw him nominate a higher contract price on a deal until the end of 2023.

It meant Newcombe, 21, was paid more than all of the other midseason draft selections and helped ward off other clubs who were either unable, or unprepared, to pay the higher price.

Rival list managers were adamant the move interfered with the integrity of the draft.

But the league on Wednesday contacted clubs to inform them the loophole would be shut for this year’s midseason draft on June 1.

I wish there were more flexible rules to allow to make it easier to recruit VFL listed players.

I think there should be something for Mid and End Season Draft for Players from a Teams VFL List
