Unofficial Preview 2022 Mid-Season Rookie Draft

Given they’d be competing for the same spot you can compare them.

Not really. They’d be getting considered because of the roles they’d play as a small forward. They seem to like the pressure Cal brings when he’s in the role, Fowler doesn’t bring pressure. If anyone, I’d have thought Fowler would be competing with Ginni for a senior spot at the Pies.

Fowler could play higher up. the ground - In that high half forward role we've gone Cal>Bianco, both of whom underwhelmed. Could easily go Fowler next if he was on the list.

MID-SEASON DRAFT CHANCES

With the 2022 mid-season rookie draft just weeks away, clubs have been monitoring players in the Young Guns squads that have been scheduled to face Vic Metro and Vic Country Under 18s teams this month.

And four players loom as strong contenders to be picked up by an AFL club in a few weeks.

Western Jets’ Massimo D’Ambrosio has had a terrific NAB League Boys season so far, racking up 28, 22, 31 and 30 disposals from his four games. He then impressed against Vic Metro for the Young Guns last weekend across half-back, finishing with 24 disposals and 159 ranking points as he provided terrific run from defence. He turns 19 four days after the mid-season draft is scheduled to be held …

Aggressive, big-bodied midfielder Jai Culley was a big standout, booting four first-half goals from 22 disposals, while also having four other score assists. Culley, described by Stingrays coach Nick Cox as “certainly the best 19-year-old in the NAB League” per the Star Journal, was clean with his ball use as he pulled off some brilliant, pinpoint field kicks.

Sandringham ruck Max Ramsden was also impressive in the Young Guns clash, pushing forward to boot two goals from 16 disposals, while Dragons teammate Hugo Hall-Kahan would also be in the mid-season draft mix.

I want us to draft this Culley kid.

This answers your question Mollythedolly

"All players selected in the Colgate Young Guns squad are eligible for next month’s AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft."

The Colgate Young Guns squad features the state’s brightest 19-year-old prospects, most of whom are competing as top-age players in the 2022 NAB League Boys season. The squad also includes several VFL-listed players.

Next up they play U18 Vic Country this weekend.

They have to have nominated for the ND previously though, yes?

Yes. But you can apply to be cleared by the AFL. I think Culley would need to be cleared but I wouldn't imagine that would be an issue.

My favourite MSD options as it stands

Midfield: Bailey Rogers, Jai Culley, Mitch O'Neill
Key forward: Wade Derkson, Matt Hammelmann
Key defender: Blake Schlensog
General defender: Mutaz El Nour

Only Mids we need are Inside Ones

Culley def fills a need. 193cm midfielder. Lot will depend on where our pick falls. Potentially adel, hawks so far likely before us. We may have pick 3 or thereabouts.
Port Adelaide's Jake Pasini did an ACL yesterday, so there's another club (currently below us) who might well take a pick.
