Unofficial Preview 2022 Mid-Season Rookie Draft

With the way we operate, it's very rare that we cut an end of year rookie after 12 months - I can't see us doing it after 6 months unless it's someone like Hartley where it was only ever going to be 6 months.
Have no huge problems with the concept - just think Hartley is a long way off AFL level at moment

Don’t think he has ever been an AFL level performer and his 2022 form has been underwhelming
Exactly why for a six month “ in case of emergency “ he’d be suitable. And no skin off anybody’s nose if he doesn’t get extended.

This is all on the assumption that we don’t land a targeted kpp with our first pick. It’s just a suggested temporary backup in case all our targeted talls are already taken.

Yeah. I've seen nothing this year to suggest he should be one you use in this way. He's not even played defence the couple of times I've seen him in the VFL.

Currently we have Begg, Chugg, Dean, Ginnivan, Johnson and Noble as Category A Rookies. Noble needs to be elevated to the Primary List at the end of the year, as this is his fourth year on the list. When lists are finalised we can have a maximum of 6 Cat. A Rookies. I can see Chugg being delisted, and the remaining four players retained on the R/L. Bringing in one player to replace Roughead (and effectively have Noble's R/L spot at the end of the year) seems reasonable, but if we bring in a second player on Wednesday (who we'd want to keep on the list for 2023) there'd be no spots left, so that's why I think it doesn't make sense for us to do that. Wilson will have to be delisted or elevated from Cat. B status as well. I doubt they would dump him just after he's picked up a long-term injury, plus he was starting to show improvement. They may not want to give him a senior list spot, but could be prepared to try and pick him up in the rookie draft after delisting him. Will Kelly is another who could be in the firing line and a chance to be delisted, yet they may want to give him one last chance and put him on the R/L also.

The club will no doubt be wary of limiting the number of post-season moves they can make. Some posters will have a much longer list of players they expect/want to be moved on than others, but I think given we've had plenty of list turnover in recent years and have a good deal of youth on the list already I don't see us making that many changes at the end of the year.
I don't know what our delist strategy will be. We'll have to de-centralise our weighting with the 2020 draft class and not dig into 2019 too much.

We can afford another mature ager. A 23 year old is ideal, maybe 24. These players come into the system to help mitigate against our vets all retiring. The weird thing with our list is it's either young or old. Nothing in the middle, which is not good from a demographic perspective. So pain in 2024 might be a thing, regardless of the talent we get, unless we can fill in some holes.

I think if Carmichael gets past Essendon he could make it to us.

He seems to be the best of the mids who could realistically make it to us, and I think we have a clear need (in midfield as well as everywhere else on the ground, other than medium forward).

For a six month contract, having Hartley as an additional kpp depth option makes a lot of sense with our second pick, if we don’t have a better longer term tall option with our first pick.

Best case scenario we don’t need him and the only difference to our list is that he gets paid a bit of extra cash

He’s already at the club so can make an immediate impact if given the callup.

Hartley is a spud, already been tried at afl level.

A 22 year olds "depth option's" default contact also expires on the 31/10/22.

True....but it’s a much tougher decision to make a judgment call on retaining or delisting (and maybe ruining a kids dreams) after a few months when they are just 22. So likely 6 months turns into 18 months to give them time to prove themselves, and then that national draft list option is then closed. At least with a player near the end of his career neither party is under any illusion about medium term prospects.

I don’t deny that. But he might provide list flexibility as well as depth.

The question is whether it’s smarter to take somebody like him on as temporary depth for the 11 or so games remaining this year, and keep the options open for November.....

Or just draft someone else just because he’s there and might fill a temporary need....commit to him for 18 months and miss out on a better option in November.

I don't think you watched the video! I'm pretty sure none of those players will be available e.g. Lloyd had Sam Walsh at no. 20. So it's not about the mid-season draft!
I wouldn't mind us getting a few extra picks to really load up in this draft.

Nope.
But they should introduce it though
They need it as clubs who are lower can get talent that could potentially see them end higher, meaning say the 15th placed club slips as they don't have access to that talent.

Norf have had a ridiculous strong hold on top picks so if they can't improve, something else beyond the draft is wrong.

COLLINGWOOD

List chasm:
Key-position players – ideally at both ends of the field. Collingwood has only had 25 goals from key forwards this season – ranked 17th in the competition. But now with Jordan Roughead retiring and Nathan Kreuger on the inactive list, while the likes of Jack Madgen, Charlie Dean and Will Kelly remain sidelined, the Pies should also be on the hunt for a key defender.

Possible number of draft selections: 2 (first selection Pick 9)

Draftees to consider: If they go defence, Williamstown intercept backman Kallan Dawson, who’s shown tremendous development this season and has nominated 18-month contract terms, is a hot chance to be snapped up by the Pies if he’s still on the board, while Northern Bullants’ Mutaz El Nour would also be in the mix. If they opt for a forward, 191cm North Adelaide prospect Jacob Bauer or 195cm Peel Thunder ruck-forward Wade Derksen would be good options.

It seemed a bit of a strange move to take him in the first place!
There's some competition for KPP - again. Which means Collingwood really has to nail our pick/s. I hope we take two because as I said before, it's worth having the full list and chopping them at the end of the year. What's the harm? Not a lot.
