With Harry Pittonet McGovern out and Marchbank a few weeks away every side we play knows going in that we are 'short' and it will be up to the Carlton midfield to win the game and up forward a lot of pressure on 'the smaller players to win the ground ball game.

I see little scoring power difference between the sides and if pushed would say that Collingwood have the advantage in more experience and enough class to finish any easy entries.
Defensive capability is pretty even with Collingwood probably one of the best intercepting defenses in the game - both Howe and Moore are outstanding marks. Their smaller defenders are no slouches I like both Quaynor and Noble. Ground ball gets and contested forward pressure from Carlton will largely determine how effective Collingwood's rebound game is allowed to be - I imagine that Martin if fit will be in to provide some kind of marking capability as a secondary target with SOJ being the relief ruck - Charlie is going to have another battle against multiple defenders all day.

So pretty clear for me where the game will be decided and that is between the arcs - and it will be a question of which team makes the most of their possessions as as well which team gets the most over 4 quarters.

Should be quite a battle - Carlton going in as favourites doesn't mean much. I'm thinking as experienced as the Collingwood mids are- there is probably a bit too much firepower in the Carlton midfield and a Carlton under Voss has a lot of teh younger kids playing well enough to hold their own.
It's going to be wet for this one jab, that nullifies the height a bit, be interesting to see which way the filth go in selection.
Can see Voss and McRae wanting to beat each other badly here, becoming a fierce rivalry in time only adding more fuel to Carl v Filth.
Which all points to great viewing for us supporters, who are longing to see a bit of mongral, chomping at the bit for this one. 👍

Well wet conditions will certainly give mongrel a bit of opportunity to shine - no doubt mate selections will be interesting - as they always are

Great to see LOB's game compressed down in this video:

A bit of a lesson for those who see him as purely an outside / attacking player. The tackles, spoils and getting back to support defence - it's easy to miss that but the amount of gut running required to be there but also get back up the ground to attack is huge. Not everyone can do that.

Add that to what he does well: O'Brien is ranked third of the top 100 kicks into the forward 50 in the AFL, according to Champion Data.

That is why he keeps getting a game. Not that he doesn't still have areas he can get better at - but we can't pick 22 inside mids. We need outside run too.

I like highlight reals when they show him marking a ball and then not the disposal.....then the next one he marks it and they show him hitting a target.....i wonder what happened with that first kick 🤣

Also didnt show a couple of his 'spoils' when he tried to hit the ball away with a wet lettuce leaf 🤣

Look at how many key players we have out now...

Last year we would struggle against this year's Eagles side... in fact, we lost to their WAFL side last year anyway let's not forget...

How long did Teague keep blokes in the side when they didn't deserve it? How many new players did he bring in? He hung onto the older statesmen hoping they could turn back the clock.

Both Cripps and Cerra were below their best v Sydney too...

Last year Walsh was having impact on games every week... only just started to build now.

Sure if we had Hewett, Charlie and Cerra last year we would've won maybe a couple more games but we wouldn't be anywhere near top3 at the half way point.

The game plan was extremely flawed. Selection integrity was inconsistent at best and the direction was heading nowhere. We basically relied on individual brilliance from a handful of players each week to keep us in games.

All of that has changed.

Can you honestly see us putting up horse shit performances like we did last year v Eagles, Giants (half the team didn't lay a tackle at half time), Norf, Port, Pies, Suns etc? No way player personnel was going to make much of a difference to the application in those games.

I get the point but I still disagree.

The talent we've had on the field the last 2 years to this year is like chalk and cheese.

Walsh a year older
Cripps has been cooked for 2 years and is now in Brownlow form
Kennedy was playing poorly in the VFL
Hewett was at Sydney
Cerra - Freo

Now if Hewett misses 2 weeks we've got enough depth to cover it.

None of this is a comment one way or another on the coaching (love Vossy). It's just that the available talent in the most important area of the ground (midfield) is 500% better this year.

He probably stuffed up the kick. But every player in the team stuffed up a kick. And my point wasn't that he's the perfect player.

Not many people acknowledge the importance to the team of guys who can run like that. It's like having an extra player on the field. I love Cripps and Kennedy but neither of them get back into defensive to help out too often. They don't have that running power.

He still makes some shocking mistakes but the more games he can play the fewer mistakes he will make.

The knock on Lob leading up to draft from his coaches in TAC was that he was not a contested player ( to pout a positive spin on it) At pick ten for an outside player you'd take running power and kicking as a given - after 5 years he is still soft. I don't trust him to make a tackle he tries a lot and always tends to bounce off blokes and/or sllde down their bodies like an overcooked string of spaghetti.

If he could harden up a tad - then his run would be so much more valuable and the harden up might include kicking long range goals- I was so excited to see him slot one from 50 a couple of weeks ago - we need more like that especially since he has teh kicking power to do it.

Fingers crossed for Lauchie - he could turn himself into serious weapon - and earn a lot more money than a rookie does - if he hardens up.

Thankfully Bossy recognises players for what they can offer to the team and where/how within the structure/game plan.
