I'm happy that Mirkov's bashing the ball fwd was a total disaster and partly lost us the game.

The coaches will surely have noticed it and had a word to him. Better he learns that lesson now than at AFL level.

If he makes it to AFL level, he'll have times where he's up against a relief ruckman and again has the opportunity to bash fwd at will.

Hopefully he will have learnt to capitalise on the opportunity with great tapwork instead of bashing forward.

If you liked him tapping down the throat of Dow, Fog, Hayes.....Imagine what he can do with the likes of Cripps, Walsh, Hewett and co...
Sometimes "bashing the ball fwd" can be an effective weapon. This is dependent on your midfielders running hard (we've seen Pittonet do it a few times this year with Walsh running hard to get to the ball first) & your half forwards ensuring they clear space to enable your midfielders to capitalise on it.

It’s interesting that Durds and Carroll from two years ago have leap-frogged Philp and Kemp from the year before. Was SOS being too clever, clever with that draft?

Time will tell.

Both Philp & Kemp have had long injury lay offs in their relatively short time at the club. With their fitness & confidence they are still playing catch up.

You can see something special in both, they just look rusty atm. Hopefully by the end of the season, their game comes back.
Kemp has a great leap and kick, is also Mcgovern quick, should be a great player once he build consistency

I only watched the second half but I think people are being too harsh on Dow. You need your team mates to help you be involved in chains and link up as much as anything. Getting yourself to the right positions doesn't mean you'll always be used.

In the last quarter he was trying hard but was not helped by a very close-tag, at times 2 on 1, and Mirkov tapping it no-where near him. Had a few bounce at right angles away from him and was held quite a few times at stoppages that weren't called. Still, i think he had 11 last quarter possessions to finish with 33 touches, 10 clearances, 5 tackles and 2 goals. He worked hard defensively a number of times too.

you mean as part of a plan?!

On reflection, this ugly, scrappy, agro game was very entertaining, It played out like theatre.
On a spooky stormy night, we had the massive underdogs, 'Franga', who didn't look good enough to kick a goal for 3 quarters, verses one of the AFL big boys, Carlton.
Just like theatre, some strange kind of intervention happens, and the 'heroes' kick 10? goals in the final 30 minutes, from all angles and distances. The commentators almost burst a blood vessel and the locals are doing cartwheels.
And there was a story within a story in the first half.
Marchy, the real hero of the show, pretty well BOG in his long awaited comeback game.
Go Blues...go Franga. I now have another fond memory of that place.
ripping post!

Mirkov is like a young giraffe stumbling and bumbling about at times but can completely understand why the club is super excited about him.
He has good hands and I think he’s kicking will be ok with more time.
He is going to be a weapon at every ruck contest.

That’s one hell of a fade-out. How? Why?
Oh well, good to see Dow and Fog racking up numbers. Welcome back Mr Marchbank!

I think Akuei is going to turn out alright too. Got a good leap, agile (like a young panther), look out next year...phwoar!
He's got a smooth, effortless kicking style also.

All kudos to Marchbank here, but Dow is really the one to focus on short term.

Will only get a guernsey in the ones through injury because there are too many in front of him, though I think he has been playing really well, especially winning the ball, and with ball in hand.

The one thing that he still has from the Bolton/Teague era is the bad habit of corralling the opposition player with the ball.

If he can start nailing some tackles, or at least pressuring the opposition so their disposal is affected, then I think he will be ready for promotion.

i watched the game in full this evening. A couple of observations:

Dow was absolutely sensational. For most of the game they played a hard rotating tag on him and he just persisted. He is running hard back defensively which he never did before this year. He’s not the defensive liability he was. No he doesn’t get Fogarty’s junk tackles at the ball ups. Big deal. The guy is an afl player full stop.I thought he tried his guts out the whole game. His hands below his knees are amazing. He is absolutely ready to play on ball any time they want. Strange that some don’t realise the irony of writing Dow off due to the emergence of Kennedy…A player who has improved a lot as the years passed.

Kemp was much better than given credit for. Must have been a shocking game to play down back. Those comparing Kemp to Marchbank didn’t observe that Marchy played a loose back most of the game. Unfair. Kemp is worth preserving with.

Marchy was superb as others suggested. Looks ready now.

Mirkov did a few nice things again.

Overall I felt the wind just totally wrecked the game. Losing setterfiled at half time and Marchy at 3:4 seemed to also affect us. Not sure Dow even came off in the last for example. Reading the commentary made me think we quit but we didn’t. Bounce of the ball, some rushes of blood. Also some unlucky umpiring calls against us. Momentum. It’s one quarter. They will bounce back.

Marchbank maybe one more game in the reserves then he'll be straight in I think. Some of our raw types like Akuei and Mirkov played alright in this one. Showing some improvement. Dow is playing well, in the past he would struggle in the AFL then go back to the VFL where he was quite mediocre, suggests if he plays he will go pretty well. Fogarty is a bit of an inbetweener, not great at AFL level, top shelf VFL.

Kemp, he's going alright but he's still finding form and developing. The few months forward returned mixed results. He's back in defence where he probably plays better and had good form there last season in the VFL. Not really banging to door down, he needs to do the third tall things, intercepth, kill packs, etc. He's nearly there but not quite.

Motlop, he's a bit inconsistent as a forward but that is the nature of playing as a small forward. You don't always kick goals but you have to always apply pressure. He's looking comfortable as a midfielder. I saw it straight away, that he just looks like a mid and a very good one. I'd like to see him played on a wing a bit as well, see what he can do there but I like him on the ball.

Philp, he goes alight, he goes hard. He looks like someone really building his game. I still have high hopes for him and think he will make it but what position I don't know. Would like to see him played in multiple roles. Think he would be good in defence.

Very scrappy game, they played very defensive footy. Hard to judge your more outside players in these conditions.
