400k is just above afl average wage. He would get more from any team for that. Hell we were paying lewy Taylor that 6 years ago

Would probably get down to duration of the contract as much was the per annum figure. If it is 6 years, couldn't see us matching it at any figure.

IMO a two year contract with an option for third is the most I would like to see the club commit. The club has developed McStay into a useful third tall cog, however he is not essential or irreplaceable. The club committed to Lyons for three years (one too many IMO) so if McStay gets three so be it. But anything above I would consider mismanagement of the list.

I’m neither here nor there on McStay staying or going.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I prefer a two genuine ruck set up, though I would like our second ruck to be more capable forward, a la a young Ryder or Rowan Marshall.

With Hipwood healthy, I wouldn’t necessarily have McStay in the team.

Nor am I keen on paying Dan more than $400k per.

If each of your best 22 is on $400k per, then your best 22 is worth have $8.8m. As Mitch has mentioned on his podcast, the role players in the team don’t even make league average salary. This is balanced out by the “stars” and bigger names in the team being on higher salaries.

Dan is a role player. Similar to Mitch, Starcevich, Ah Chee and McCarthy, and a lot of the fringe players outside the best 22.

If Dan is being offered 6 years, he should be taking it and not looking back from a financial perspective.

Dan is 27 years old in 2 months time and his inconsistency in the entire time at the club (142 games) would be concerning for the club.
A 6 year contract for any 27 year old player such as Dan is not smart from any club. Reiks desperation to me.
A 6 year contract offer to Dan is something he would/should seriously consider as that is a very good deal for him.
If I were Dan's manager I would be advising him to take the offer.
If I were Brisbane, I would definitely not match the offer.

I think I agree with every thing in this.

Dan is better than a role player, but a 6 year deal for a 27 year old is almost a marque player offer. Much as I like him, Dan isn’t a marque player.

Club can’t afford to pay one player above market rate or the whole pay structure will fall apart.

Gut feel is Dan will stay. Seems a sensible person (I’ve never meet him, just the impression I’ve got) I think he might be able to imagine what it would be like living through a Melbourne winter if you don’t live up to the hype of being a big contract player at a Melbourne club!

Fort would have quite a bit of experience playing on him that's for sure. Will be interesting to see how he goes.

is a free agent in demand, with the Brisbane key forward attracting ample interest from Victorian-based clubs, reports the Herald Sun.

McStay, 26, has played 142 games and kicked 115 goals for the Lions since being drafted with Pick 25 in the 2013 national draft.

The Herald Sun reported McStay had put off contract talks with Brisbane until later in the season, with “almost every Melbourne-based club” inquiring about the key forward’s footy future.

The report indicated if McStay did leave the Lions at season’s end, he would only join a Victorian-based club as he’s originally from Melbourne.

McStay booted a career-high 28 goals last year, including 17 from his last eight full games.

He kicked 2.2 from 14 disposals and six marks against North Melbourne last weekend.

One thing I've also come around to is the 2 ruck team.

It really counts towards the end of games. But your second ruck needs to be dangerous if resting.

400K for Dan is more than enough and if someone wants to give him an extended contract on a lot more then so be it.

I don't think he's finished top 12 in our B/F after 9 years but I'm hopeful he's still on the improve.

I don’t see the point in having 2 rucks in the team if the second ruck can’t be effective while not in the ruck. I think it’s just wasting a valuable space. I don’t think it’s feasible to have 3 talls plus a resting ruckman which is what I worry Fages may go with once Hippy is back.

Hippy is so athletic though he could be utilised elsewhere as a wing or mid or something.

you also say the same with the second ruck, having someone who at best breaks even is a problem. even if only 15-20% of the time
Fullarton tonight was still only breaking even at best. Not sure how many hitouts he got. The ball a couple of times from centre went cats way too easy.
So unless McStay or Daniher can do better as a second ruck then at best breaking even. I see it as a problem.
With two rucks yes we top heavy although Joe,Hipwood and McStay pretty mobile. So yes do you send one to a wing or up the ground while Oscar/Fort rest in the goal square.

Also gives us a different smaller and faster forward line while he's in the with just McStay and Hipwood as the tall forwards. Pretty sure our record was very good while it was those 3 and Oscar as the ruck. Personally I think it's a near certainty that the structure will be Daniher, McStay and Hipwood with Oscar in the ruck.

I remember when Roosy put on the gloves and everyone went whoaa.

For guys like Dan who lack a little confidence it just might be the edge that he needs.

But overall it's probably psychological

I don’t think losing him from the 50 for 20% of game time will be too big a deal. We’ve seen how dangerous Charlie can be when it’s his 50 and it’ll take a fair bit of adjustment from opposition teams to switch between Charlie and Joe running the forward 50 for periods of games.

It has been used for decades at all levels of footy. Not sure how much it helps. It’s like a sticky Vaseline.
I know some guys dislike it on their hands when kicking for goal.
