I might be remembering it wrong but I didn't think Daniher was a bad option as a second ruck, not great in the contest but good on the ground and got a lot of the ball around the ground. Also gives us a different smaller and faster forward line while he's in the with just McStay and Hipwood as the tall forwards. Pretty sure our record was very good while it was those 3 and Oscar as the ruck. Personally I think it's a near certainty that the structure will be Daniher, McStay and Hipwood with Oscar in the ruck.

We were 10-1 with an average winning margin of above 6 goals per game with that combination. Some of that was the draw but it included thumpings of Essendon, gws, Geelong and port and a good win over the tigers. That is 100% going to be the structure once hippy is fit.

True. We were in hot form then IIRC.

You run the risk if Oscar goes down of your structure dismantling but everything's a risk isn't it.

I loved Daniher around the ground because he was really effective once the ball hit the deck and could still take a big grab. If you know he's not going to bodily contest the ball up then perhaps it gives you an extra. McStay's not hopeless in the forward line throw ins as a back up.

Regardless unless Fort proves himself irreplaceable that's the way we'll be going. Most dominant teams have had 2 rucks but I suppose it's not a prerequisite.

I’ve generally liked what Darcy has done but nothing has made him indispensable so far.

Some teams will dominate with their second ruck against Joe but I think we have to live with that - Hippy, Joe and Mcstay are too good to leave out and our already at times spotty transition defence couldn’t handle another ruck on top of that.

Yeah . You were right. I've had to up my offer on Dan to 500k. For 4 years .

If that's not enough I suppose you could twist my arm.

I think their field kicking when in the middle makes up for any losses in the ruck contest and it gives us an extra rotation through the midfield by not having a true second ruck.

What is the scuttlebutt re our salary cap over the next few years, have we got room to make a play for a free agent?

Could we make a play for restricted free agent Angus Brayshaw, hard running 2 way midfielder with a good 4-5 years left in the game?

Pretty tight I think.

What's happened to Paddy Dow, is he just not good enough?

Precisely.

IIRC the top 4 in 2017 were the ones in the discussion for pick 1, IIRC a few on here were keen on Dow. Brayshaw looking like the best at the moment.

1- Rayner.
2- Brayshaw.
3- Dow.
4- Davies-Uniacke.
Fagan was very keen for Bradshaw. Came home with a wet sail especially in the NAB league. Cam had the runs on the board though. Different players though.

People thought Brayshaw was too vanilla for pick 1. Was seen as too safe a pick

Yeah let Mc Stay walk.I mean 6ft 5 key position players who are highly mobile and can kick like a mule are a dime a dozen, grow on trees etc etc.
Honestly he goes only if he gets a godfather offer we cannot match

Mark Robinson: Where does Daniel McStay fit in when it comes to forward status and earning power?

McStay has one of those footy/life decisions to make.

The numbers offered to him are estimated to be:

Six years at about $600,000 per season to leave and;

Four years at about $500,000 per season to stay.

That’s about $3.6 million versus about $2 million, although after the initial four years at the Lions, you’d think another contract would be put on the table. You’d think, but he’ll be 30 then and who knows how his body will be travelling.

Of the five games this season, he’s had two outstanding games (North Melbourne and Geelong) and three so-so games (Port Adelaide, Essendon and Collingwood).

He’s been called a “star” player and of the top 25 players targeted in a one-versus-one, McStay has the sixth-highest win rate behind Tom Hawkins (No. 1), Max King, Tom Lynch, Brody Mihocek and Jack Gunston. It’s a good list to be on.

The difference between McStay and the other five players is he is the No. 3 or No. 2 forward at the Lions and the other five are mainly the No. 1 key forward and are generally opposed to the opposition’s best defender.

A hugely popular teammate, McStay was taken aback when the Lions recruited Joe Daniher, for he believed he might be out of the team.

The Lions assured him Daniher’s arrival would make him a better player, because at No. 3 he would be a match-up nightmare for the opposition, and that’s proven to be correct.

So much so, the Lions have been told several offers have been put on the table for McStay and as an unrestricted free agent, the Lions would not be able to match an offer for him, meaning he could walk to the club of his choice.

I think that's a fair summation from Robbo.

Having a lot of freedom as 3rd banana is a lot easier gig than moving somewhere else on bigger money with higher expectations and the requirement to be a key target.

Who knows. If he keeps going as well as he has the last 2 games he'll probably think he can do it. He is a Victorian.

When he kicks a goal the song that goes up should be Money can't buy you love.

Reckon it would fall a bit short even with it being a 6 year deal. End of round 1 probably.
Would only be a couple picks difference anyways I'd think. I've missed owning another team's pick so I'm looking forward to trading picks into the future again. Wouldn't mind an Essendon, Geelong or even St Kilda pick for next season.

Surely the 6th year has to be performance based or something? I think 4 years at $500k with triggers for a 5th is fair. 6 at $600k is just something we can't match though imo.

If he did leave on a 6 year 600k deal that would net us band 1 pick I think? Not sure how that would set us for picks/points for Ashcroft

I would've thought band 1 for sure though we should finish top 4 (and hopefully win it) so not a great deal of difference in the points/trade value if it did end up at 2.
