AFL trade news: Major problem Brisbane Lions face in Josh Dunkley deal

Brisbane is hopeful Western Bulldogs star Josh Dunkley might in the coming days choose to join the Lions but would face an uphill battle to secure a suitable trade.

The uncontracted Dogs mid-forward Dunkley had been set to make a decision on his future late last week but one of the trade period’s biggest dominoes will now fall early this week.

The Western Bulldogs remain genuinely optimistic that Dunkley could still remain at the club after a fourth consecutive finals appearance despite the delay over his decision.

The Dogs are aware such a delay normally means a player is on the way out but Dunkley told the Herald Sun last week he had not yet made up his mind on the biggest decision of his football career.

Dunkley has been offered a long-term deal of at least $650,000-a-season at Port Adelaide and has an offer from the Lions.

Port Adelaide is adamant their deal is only $650,000 a season despite rivals believing their bid is worth up to $750,000 a year and the Power do not believe they are out of the race.

But if he does choose Brisbane their competing priorities and the Dogs’ hard-ball stance will make a trade complicated.

The Lions will match bids for No.1 overall pick Will Ashcroft and fellow father-son midfield prospect Jaspa Fletcher, who is considered likely to receive a bid at around pick 15-20.

Brisbane currently has picks 15 and 33 and could secure second-round compensation for departing free agent Dan McStay, which could fall at pick 34.

Matching a bid for Ashcroft alone would require 2400 draft points, with the accumulated total of draft selections 15, 33 and 34 worth 2217 total points.

So they would have to use their No.44 pick (linked to Port Adelaide) to find enough points for Ashcroft even before they tried to bid on midfielder Fletcher, whose father Adrian played 107 games at the Bears and Lions.

The Dogs believe Dunkley could scarcely be a more valuable trade commodity as a 25-year-old midfield star who kicked 18 goals this year.

So they will want more than a first-round pick and the Lions will likely have no 2022 picks and could be in points deficit with their 2023 first-rounder.

If they secured a free agent like Hawthorn’s Jack Gunston they might have to trade a later pick for him to preserve their free agency compensation for McStay.

The Lions will confirm in coming days that Mitch Robinson has played his last game at the club after he said he was “devastated” he could not announce his retirement before round 23.

Brisbane had made a club decision that Robinson announcing his future plans would be distracting, especially given he was still in the selection frame if there were finals injuries.

The 33-year-old has not given up hope of securing another contract elsewhere and while he was furious with the club’s decision he will move on as a fan favourite after 147 games over eight seasons.

Ralphy should stick to worrying about how Tigers will trade for Hopper and Taranto.

I wonder if he's still stuck in the ARC conspiracy.

Us needing to find a way to bring in Dunkley is why I wonder if we should be prepared for a surprise trade or trade request.
The players I see who could be part of a surprise trade out and would get us a reasonable return re draft points/picks >

Jack Payne as part of a deal to get Josh Dunkley in.

Dev Robertson, with Ashcroft/Dunkley? coming in he may be open to going home.

Noah Answerth, club may not see him as a vital member of our side ask him if he would consider it.

I really want to keep Payne and Robertson, losing Noah would not affect us that much IMO, we have plenty of cover in his area of the ground.

I think a lot of people are underestimating Noah.

Robinson said that Matho was going to be the one to replace him as the barometer of the team, but Answorth does just as well in his own quiet way. He's always in the pack, even when he is undersized, and he allows Rich, Kiddy and Starce to go further up the field, or allows Andrews to play off of his opponent.

Answorth's value to the team has been quietly undervalued due to his continued work off the ball this season, and I wouldn't be surprised if he takes a step forward and becomes part of our wing rotation next year. I also see him as a possible Gardiner replacement if Gardiner was to be traded.

If we do need to make a tough call on a player I hope it is one of those we can give you x but theyre prepared to give you more years type situations for someone a bit older and with an unclear long term role than one of our younger developing players like Payne, Fullarton, Prior, Answerth, Robertson

The problem is other clubs would prefer that second list of players as well. And they are actually worth something.

I think the former list have currency too but I take your point. Id like to see player movement expanded personally, I think the gains would outweigh the setbacks

Honestly, I'm reasonably confused by what occurred. He told the media after the game that it would be his last game at the Gabba - so what was he prevented from doing? Was it the chair off and maybe getting on the mic and telling the crowd post-game? There was no guarantee that the tigers game would be his last either.

If he wanted to announce it the week before the elim final, I think it is fair enough to have the focus on the team instead. So I'm not too sure what really has gone on.

I think Mitch has got a lot of leeway from the club to build his personal brand in terms of access and permission to film his vlogs. You may say that it benefited the club, but equally seemed pretty clear that some players didn't want to be involved.

The only thing I can be sure about in all of this is that Mitch could have had a bit more tact about when he chose to raise his concerns about his treatment. It was a really kick in the guts to compound watching a shocking final.
With all due respect, if you don't know about most of the components around his last game, which you have stated in your post.
Then it would be fair to say that making judgements on Mitch's comments is based on your assumptions and maybe a little unfair on Mitch.
Both sides f@#$ed up here for right or wrong.
I think a more pragmatic view of both club and player should be taken.
However I feel that maybe those who are connected to the club who post here may have a more one sided view and ???, reside over the balance of their remarks.

I don't see why we need to give up a key piece to get in Dunkley. The idea of trades is to make improvements, not step sideways. If we have to give up some depth / a fringe players so be it but key position players and gun youngsters should not be on the table. Two first rounders is more than enough or whatever it ends up being. We might need to do some machinations to turn those picks into other picks but so be it.

Dogs will rightly ask for a bit more. Two firsts is fine for them if we get the picks for bid matching purposes.
Our two firsts for Dunkley + points to get us Ashcroft and Fletcher.
Do the Doggies have enough points though seems overkill to offer both of our first round picks for Dunkley
