with a bit of rucking inbetween
Isn’t that already Dunkley’s job, but we could always get Hipwood to allow Dunkley to piggy back on his shoulders so we could get that extra height against those quality ruckman out there ;)

We only have the one rookie A spot, don't we? Lester onto the rookie list for another year would make sense to me. It was suggested in the article yesterday that Fullarton and McFadyen would be retained so possibly just down to negotiating year/s or we're spacing out re-signing news.

Feels like Gardiner is going at this point and I guess Tom Berry is weighing up whether he wants to stay as depth with us or move to the Suns and get a more likely chance at playing AFL.
I am seeing virtually nothing on Dizzy regarding interest from other clubs, so perhaps he has tested the market and the Lions offer is not that bad, possibly also with concerns around Adams maybe a slightly upgraded contract was negotiated. Perhaps McFayden on Rookie list, he deserves at least another year. IF Gardiner leaving, Lester on the rookie list

I am glad Prior has re-signed and hope he can continue improving next year. Coleman and Michael also pleasing re-signings. List is looking very strong for next year.

really liked his enthusiasm and coming in for the odd AFL game at small forward is not an easy role. I believe he is good enough just needs a decent run.
Happy result for both parties tbf though, allows Berry Jr to find somewhere to play regular footy and we have extra spot on our list that we could fill if we wanted to :thumbsu:

Hopefully Berry Jr can find a Best 22 spot at Gold Coast (if true) cause he is a quality young person like his brothers and parents :)
In what capacity?
Seemed to play midfield in vfl?
Or you think he’s a presssure forward only?

I think a defence/pressure small forward will probably be his most likely avenue into that Gold Coast’s Best 22, especially now Rankine has left and Sexton will probably be delisted at the end of his contract whenever that is (rightly or wrongly).

Trade salary cap space for pick 7 and let them keep Bowes?
I've heard talk before that this sort of thing might not be too far away. Apparently it already happens in American sports. But not allowed here currently.
Players coming out of contract at the end of 2023/2024 who will probably be worth between $700k-$1m

McLuggage ($900k-1m), Berry ($700k), Kiddy ($700-800k), Zac Bailey ($700-800k), Starc ($700-800k), Hipwood ($700-800k)

Surely we come under a salary squeeze soon...
Do clubs in general do much work around setting players up post-football in terms of lifestyle/career? In terms of say assisting with networking across the wider community, maybe careers counselling to help players find a vocation that suits them and that they like, which they can study for while they are still playing. (I know players study but I'm wondering how much the club guides them in that)

Even arranging financial advice through a reputable local planning service. As an ex-financial adviser myself I can certainly imagine offering my services to 40 young men all earning between $200k and $1m for far less than I would if they came to me piecemeal of their own accord.

I'd have thought this would be a brilliant use of club resources, even if it came out of our soft cap (I don't even know if it would). Players may then be willing to play for less than otherwise, given they wouldn't be so hung up on making hay while the sun shines.
Kharmis is from Queensland right I think I remember an article where we were linked to him earlier in the year
Liked the look of this guy in the couple of games I saw him play.

Very excited about the future of micheal......Drummondish hopefully.

Frankly I can't see us losing a game over the next few seasons.:trophy::trophy:

I just noticed on the main board Trade & Draft thread that Cooper Hodge is eligible as a father/son to the Hawks in the 2024 draft (same year as Levi Ashcroft), anyone know if Cooper is in the Lions Academy?

Just imagine if we drafted him (NGA) over the Hawks F/S rules, we might just never lose a game ever again 🤤

Particularly if he is a potential high draft pick, it would be delicious.
So that would mean that at the end of the '24 season dual premiership and 50 game veteran Wil Ashcroft would be looking forward to welcoming his brother to the team later that year.

The BigFooty punditry are divided over whether F/S Levi Ashcroft or Brisbane Academy prospect Cooper Hodge will be bid on first (although they are united in their belief that in an uncompromised draft they would definitely go picks one and two). Questions arise whether Brad Scott's Lion's pedigree will interfere with Essendon's number one pick and it's likelihood of being used in a bid. The Hawks, still suffering under the sanctions placed on them during the First Nations saga that erupted in '22 are resigned over Cooper becoming a Lion as lacking first, second and third round picks for the second of three years would not have been able to afford to match any bids on Cooper in any case (and they would rather Brisbane have him than Essendon) but are still hopeful that their coming last for the second year in a row might prompt the AFL Commission to grant some relief especially now that Jeff Kennet is no longer affiliated with the Club.

Luke Hodge is unavailable for comment except to say that he supports his son in whatever choice he makes and that both Brisbane and Hawthorn were fine clubs when he played for them.

Eddie McGuire has come out of semi-retirement demanding a Royal Commission due to the unfair treatment the Vic clubs are receiving and the obvious privilege provided to the upstart Lions.

Luke moved up at the end of 2017.

Five years from that is the end of 2022 - so Cooper will be eligible for selection as an academy member because he's had the five years residency.

You don’t need to reside in an academy zone for 5 years to join an academy.

You do need to reside in an academy zone for 5 continuous years, to be drafted to that club.

As for Cooper Hodge, he’s not draft eligible in 2024. He will be old enough to join our in 2023 and will be draft age in 2027.

Even better then, gets to join our club after we have won 5 premierships in a row ;)
