The thing about Gunston that I'm somewhat hmmmming about is the free agency aspect, as that would presumably affect the McStay compo.

Presumably we'll work it all out though

It would affect the McStay compo and Hawthorn wouldn’t get anything for him because they’re bringing in Amon via free agency so it would suit both teams to make a trade. From Hawthorn’s perspective a future 3rd is better than nothing so that should get it done imo.

Side note but anyone else hear on Trade Exchange today that Cal Twomey of all people briefly brought up that he doesn’t quite understand how Geelong, after winning a flag with the oldest list in the comp somehow has the cap space to afford a salary dump player like Bowes? Said something didn’t feel right about it.

Slow steps but maybe someone will start actually looking into it.

Oh yeah, forgot about him
Before Joe, it's Cam Ellis-Yolmen in 2019 and Brent Moloney in 2012 (in the first year of free agency) in terms of our non-delisted free agency pick-ups.

Some Dogs posters seem to think the medal adds to his trade value. Hehe!

Should we throw in Lewy Taylor’s Rising Star to even it out?

Bontempelli can use an Officeworks label maker to stick “BONT” on it.

When does lyons contract end?? Would free up some space aswell

2 more years :/

Wonder if we can do a salary dump. He’d be handy at North or the bombers.

Total speculation here but wouldn’t shock me if JL won’t be on crazy money those last couple of years. Good money no doubt, but I’d be surprised if it was more than 500k.

I must say, I'm thrilled with the Gunston announcement and can't wait to see another dangerous and experienced player provide some structure and hopefully leadership to our other forwards.

Can anyone shed some more specific light on the type of player he is and what he will bring to the team?

My understanding of Gunston's game is that he's a mobile lead-up forward who has a knack for finding space inside forward 50 and exceptional finishing skills both on the run and at set shots.

Whilst I can see why some may view him as an upgrade on McStay, I'm under the impression they are different players. McStay was so valuable to us as he could not only clunk them (fairly) consistently, but would almost always never let his opponent intercept mark by creating a contest and bringing the ball to ground. His contested marking/crash and bash style complimented Hipwood and Daniher nicely and he played an underrated, but not a starring role in our side (certainly not for the price Collingwood are prepared to pay).

Does Gunston bring a similar crash and bash contested game? Or is his primary value his forward craft which will give our mids an option to confidently kick to? Is he considered a leader at the Hawks and how susceptible to injury is he?

I definitely see the value in his forward craft which will hopefully alleviate our "bomb and hope" strategy. However how does he go 1v1 in the air? Can we trust him to consistently bring the ball the ground and/or clunk them as we saw McStay did during his peak?

He is not a crash and bash type.

Didn't think so. Do we need a more physical presence? I just hope we are composed enough to not kick it in the air hoping Hipwood, Daniher or Gunston will split the pack and allow our smaller mids to crumb.

I think excitement about Gunston is also about the thought we might work on our ball movement such that we require less down the line contests.

Gunston also very good at positioning and timing of leads to avoid the need to bomb it long to him. A great pick up considering the cost.

I think our forwards are probably too maligned when it comes to leading, something I noticed in the back half of the season was that the issue is more the guy holding the ball coming in.

Our forwards do often actually lead, but 9/10 times the incoming ball user hesitates and the moment is gone. Not everyone, Coleman for example always fired straight away

I often think our forwards lead too early, before the kicker has even had time to get back off the mark etc. So they essentially waste the space they had in front of them.

That's from watching live at the ground and being able to see the leads from start to finish etc.

It sounds obvious, but there's much to be said for playing the game that's in front of you, not the game as you want it to be. Too often I think we do the latter.

Also this strange logic that because it’s not a bidding war between multiple clubs, he is worth more.

The very reason he has selected one club, rather than open to going anywhere, means he won’t go to the highest bidder.
