Nek minut comes back to Brisbane and has an AA season in a flag winning team.

Won't be surprised if he plays better with us.
He would have a lot more support and can pretty much run up n down the wing as he likes.
But he won't be useful in contested ball which is our bread n butter to be selected, so that's a no.

List changes. 9 player out, and 6 back in. Dunkley, Gunston, Ashcroft, Fletcher, Lester and Cockatoo rookie re-drafted.

Are there any rumours or thoughts on filling the last 3 spots?

Are Oscar McDonald and Narkle worth looking at as delisted free agents?

McDowell-White as well
That’s right. Darryl’s boy was mentioned.
2 spots to go.
Do they hang out for a couple of long-shots in the draft, or look at a one or two delisted free agents.
I’m thinking McDonald as a DFA on a two year contract as a back up key position. Or see what Narkle has to offer. He has McCarthy, Cockatoo, and Fort as support.
2023 picks and draft are going to be slim pickings for Brisbane. Might be worth getting the “best of the rest” now.

Where would Narkle sit on the depth chart of mids, considering his ball use is worse that Mathieson’s.

He wouldn’t be high on an injury free list list, but he could bring the experience of training with the current premiers.

Thoughts on McDonald as a cheap backup tall?

Not sure how accurate this is from foxsports
Below from an article dated 2/11/2022

BRISBANE

Arrivals:
Josh Dunkley (traded/Western Bulldogs), Jack Gunston (traded/Hawthorn)

Departures: Tom Berry (traded/Gold Coast), Nakia Cockatoo (delisted), Mitchell Cox (delisted), Ryan Lester (delisted), Connor McFadyen (delisted), Dan McStay (free agency), Mitch Robinson (retired), Ely Smith (delisted), Deividas Uosis (delisted)

Uncontracted: None

Contracted: 37 (no category B rookies)

Draft picks: 34, 35, 36, 38, 55, 73

The Lions enter the national draft with 33 players on their senior list and will match likely first-round bids on father-son prospects Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher. They actively acquired more draft points in the trade period to help that cause and are expected to continue doing so. A third father-son-eligible player, Darryl McDowell-White, is set to join Brisbane as a category B rookie, while they are also committed to redrafting Nakia Cockatoo – who is already contracted for 2023 but not counted above – and Ryan Lester.

The players set to change their club’s AFL fortunes in 2023

BRISBANE LIONS

Jack Gunston

Gunston doesn’t have anything to prove given his stellar career, but the form he has shown when able to get out on the park in recent years suggests he will do wonders for the Lions if he gets through a pre-season unscathed. On a short-term basis, Gunston should prove a considerable upgrade on ex-Lion Dan McStay and in turn could bolster the Lions’ premiership hopes. It’s all about how Gunston’s body fares, but he has got a stack to offer if up and running.

As Gerard Healey would say, just dip him in the holy water that is the Brisbane River 🤣

He seems to have recovered from his bulging disc in his back well after surgery in 2020, and ankle injuries he had this year were from an awkward landing and then another player falling on the back of the same ankle re-injuring it. Hopefully he gets a bit more luck next year!

I know they play different roles, but even with the injury interrupted season, he still kicked 32 goals from 16 games compared to 25 goals from 22 games for McStay.

I am quite happy to get Gunston as a good replacement forward after McStay's departure
As mentioned he is a different type to McStay, and closer to the end of his career being 31 years old for the 2023 season
But what a great addition to our side until someone else steps up
A solid season in 2022 with a struggling club
As you mentioned he had some issues in 2020 and 2021 so a solid return to form in 2022 with 32 goals
My only issue is his tackle count dropped again in 2022 to 22
His tackle count going back from 2022:- 22, 2, 22, 46, 46, 58, 71 (career high 2016)
We don't want the ball waltzing out of our forward 50 to easily.
The averages listed below don't make this stat look too bad.
A new club with a different mindset hopefully lifts his tackle count

Some stats comparing Gunston to McStay

Gunston will probably be the smartest of our taller forwards as far as leading to good spots and giving himself opportunities. He won't provide the physical pack contests though which I am sure our smalls would appreciate.
He will play the team role like they all will as set out by the new forwards coach.

My concern is similar a lack of physicality in the forwardline
Was thinking about this today. We will really have to look for leading options much more in 2023. Which is a good thing, it suits our personnel more and might help us avoid giving up so many intercepts to teams like Geelong, Melbourne and Richmond.

What is your concern? We have, if not the most potent forward line, one of the best in the competition. Think concerns should be directed to another area of the ground to be honest.

I worry a bit about our forwards being competitive in the air when the ball is kicked long out to the wing. Can't afford to give away intercept marks to the opposition.

Even with McStay, we struggled quite a lot when we were only breaking even in the midfield battle to win or half those wing / half forward contests.

I also don't think we really have a true crumbing small forward, adding McCarthy + Cameron who are both strong overhead and go for their marks (as well as being genuine targets in their own right) means adding gunston doesn't change that forward structure to me.

Weather it needs to be changed or not, I think it's potent enough so if we can improve our midfield contest (with the addition of Dunkley and maybe the return to form of Lyons) then scoring wont be our issue.
