I also wonder if Rayner could be best suited to be more of an outside midfielder like Clug. His ball use was elite late in the season while despite being a big boy his work in traffic isn't all that good

I'd like Bailey on the wing. Hasn't really shown much on the ball. Let him use his speed and skill
Doesn't have the tank to be an outside mid.

Time to improve the tank then.

Rockliff did it over a few off seasons. Hope Rayner makes some inroads this year.
He has been making gradual inroads every year since coming to the Lions.
But I don’t think he will ever be fit enough to play on a wing. Or make it as a consistent outside player.
He was the only inside mid (when in there) that actually played decent footy in the final against Geelong.

With Dunkley added to the mix, Rayner might need to add more flexibility in the roles he can do.

Improving the tank would be a good start down that path.

Rayner has trimmed down considerably over the years but most likely weighs the same
Another preseason (6th) and endurance should improve again
Lions fans have waited a while for Cam to have a breakout year
Showed enough in 2022 to think 2023 will be his year
He will play all of 2023 as a 23 year old, so, he is at the right age to breakout and hopefully be a star of the competition

Not so sure 23 is the right time to "breakout". Players such as Rayner might need a couple more years before he really starts showing everyone how good he really is.

He just doesn’t have the physiology to get to that type of level.

There’s been a lot of discussion about Rayner’s tank since he got here.

The club has been putting a LOT of work in to him, just to get him to the level he’s at now.

The injury would have set back his endurance improvements but even in the offseason last year he was no longer consistently out the back in the running. I expect a further improvement this year but I agree that he is never going to be an elite runner. He is just not built that way.

Speaking of elite runners though I am going to be interested to see how Sharp goes with his running next year. For someone who has the endurance levels he has I have been disappointed in his ability to consistently get to where he has to. I wonder if he has struggled with the repeat sprint aspects of AFL running. He is one who has the engine to get all over the field and it would be good to see him start to use it more effectively.

I don’t have any expectations in regards to Rayner’s running capacity.

I’d be surprised if he reaches Petracca’s current levels.

I would like to see a lot more defensive running from Bailey. He genuinely just coasts when the ball is turned over.

Sharp was always going to be a project player. Especially on the skills and knowledge side of the game.

Mathieson was pretty decent too albeit the game was done and he wasn't out there long.

No disrespect to your comments, but ......... how much do you know about his set backs to his endurance regarding his acl injury? You talk big but do you know or are you just assuming?
Cam has always had questions about his endurance and (in my opinion) its got a lot to do with his diet and his application to hard work. Should his pre-season be a good & honest one, we will see some magic from this boy as he is loaded with ability.

ACL, diet, questionable endurance, and application to hard work all seem like excuses as to why supporters feel frustrated.

I’m not. I just think Cam’s playing out of position. To me, he looks like an old school midfield bull. Play him in the centre and let him get dirty. He may not have the tank to run both ways, but there now Dunkley, Neale, Berry, Robertson, and Ashcroft to do that.

Round 1 2023 (Probably against the dog, as a constructed grudge match) with McInerney, Neale, Dunkley, and Rayner taking the centre square fir the first bounce, looks good to me.

Wasn't that the problem we had with Lyons? Wasn't able to run hard defensively so once his direct opponent got past him, it was almost cruise control.

Also, defensive running is not Ashcroft's strength either. I do think we need 1 big body in there at all times to compete with the other big boys of the comp, at least 1 of Berry/Dunkley/Rayner.

Some people are born the antelope, and some are born the rhinocerus. Cam is not built to be the antelope.
I was born to be the sloth.

Did a course with Benita Willis once - awesome female distance runner.

She said tests showed she had incredibly efficient mitochondria for turning fats and protein to energy.
Antelopes have similar awesome mitochondria, while rhinos are inefficient. I'm clearly a rhino.

Was chatting to a geneticist recently. He tests potential elite footballers (didn't specify which code) and if their DNA indicates susceptibility to concussion they are not drafted.

Seems a terrible (but probably good long term?) thing for the young player, though I'm sure they would be destroyed. Medicine entering a new era.

There’s only one football code in Australia that drafts kids.

Yeah I am pretty sure genetic testing of AFL players doesn't occur prior to the draft.

All testing is completed by the AFL and will include MRI's/Xray's etc if there are medical concerns.

good night sweet prince

Outside run - tick
Blistering pace - tick
Long kick - tick
play on wing - tick

Time to bring Polec back home !!!

(On a serious note, when the wooden spooner is happy to let you go with a 1 year salary as a dump, that's a low no one comes out of )
