Irrespective of him signing for this year and next year, if Dev doesn't explore his options/request a trade this year I'm backing he's prepared to wait his turn, and work on whatever he has to work on to cement his spot in the 1s next year.
Or he’s been told if he has a real good preseason there is a spot and midfield minutes available to take.

I actually think Gardiner was doing things last week that I haven't seen him do for some time. So I'm wondering whether his injury woes are behind him.

Likewise Adams has a good record on some of the gorillas. I reckon he was in the frame for AA before he got crook and he's the last player I'd be getting rid of. Well ,one of the last.

Thought Payne played well on Hogan last weekend was stiff to be dropped

I reckon about 40% of it max was his fault, but Payne did struggle really badly on Peter Wright. Granted, so did Harris in the game earlier this year. But if we had any kind of a better option (or if Marcus wasn't injured/giving away 10 cm) we probably win that game.
I'm a bit torn on Payne.

He has everything to make a really good player except right now he lacks the sort of skill and decision making capacity that you like to see in high level players.

It could just be inexperience and trying to find a niche. I'm erring on the side that he'll come good in time and in the meantime he still offers something.

Some coaches do pick and stick for the season and there are good reasons for this. Putting your trust in your core players to perform when it counts is needed. If you don't trust them they won't trust you. Plus you need battle hardened players in the midfield to be able to play a full season. The balance is giving enough chances to young promising players to become those core players so they don't leave. If we genuinely believe we are good shot to secure a flag then so be it if we lose a young player or two. If we win a flag no-one complains, if we don't supporters riot, people are moved on and we start again.

Not to mention continuity, knowing what your team mates will do, where they will be, what they are capable of.

It's gestalt theory "the whole is greater/different to the sum of it's parts"

Just like they didn’t rate Keays? 😣

Keays became the player he is through extensive opportunity at a bottom 4 team, the same opportunity and chance to flourish did not exsist with us.

The Ben that might have stayed on our list could have never become the Ben at the Crows.

Gardiner's current contract wouldn't necissarily have been the same over the life of the contract. We could have backended his contract to make sure he was a restricted free agent this year. Being in the top 25% of paid players on our list doesn't necessarily mean a player is on big money, they could concievably be on something close to the average income if we have 4 or 5 players on something about $750k-$800k mark.

He signed that 4 year contract after coming 4th in our best and fairest, having just turned 23, and likely had several tempting offers given we were an up and coming, but still struggling side. I reckon his contract would've been pretty solid.

It's just my feeling we'll be reluctant to let Gardiner go. And I don't think there'll ne too many takers given his injury history and the fact that he's not going to put bums on seats at another club.

I reckon he might be torn himself. He might come good, but don't think it will be with the Lions...and yes he is contracted, if Gardiner re-signs, fairly obvious he will have very limited opportunities at Brisbane.

I reckon your pretty accurate his contract would be very solid, hence why he is a RFA. Absolute speculation, but $500K a year (probably with game triggers etc) would not be inconceivable as we were a struggling club and he was showing promise as KPD alongside Andrews.

He means Neale could never play ruck like Adams could never play where Gardiner plays or whatever.

I think.
I think that was meant to be the point, not that I agree with it. Adams actually moves pretty well for someone his size, Gardiner always looks like he’s trying so hard so maybe it appears he’s moving quicker than he is, wouldn’t consider him a better athlete than Adams though.

I was reasonably impressed with his most recent stint in the team, albeit my opinion is coming off a lower base than others, and a few of those good performances were on more medium type forwards who he could dominate aerially.

To be clear, that isn't a bad thing as it highlights the positives of his athleticism to keep up with them, but if we had to rely on him to take a genuine key forward and free Harris up to intercept, not convinced he can do that (right now). Add that to the inconsistent skills and decision-making, and there is stuff to work on for him.

Absolutely worth retaining as depth for another year and to see if he can really put it together and as injury risk. I rate Dizzy higher than him when fit, but I also wouldn't be offering him anything more than average money to stay, so if his wage demands are higher we can survive with Harris, Marcus and Payne.

You would have thought Dev's best chance to get into the side and play that inside mid role that he is best suited for was last round v the Giants... instead they went for Matho. I went and had a look at their profile on the club website.

Dev- 185cm, 85kg.
Matho- 186cm, 86kg.

The reasoning can't be that Matho is a bigger body, he must have some issues he needs to work on, I didn't watch the last reserves game, did Dev play as a pure inside mid?

Mathieson as a big body is a myth. He’s not that.

I agree that the club wont want to lose him, but as a third tall on our list, not a huge priority. He is from Vic and I think there would be some interest, even though he is at best a 2nd tall KPD, and more suited as a 3rd KPD.
