At some level I wonder if its to pacify the SANFL ..?

They probably tolerate us playing finals, but genuinely want a GF between 2 of the tradition teams
I do wonder about this stuff. Gooden seems very keen on winning it all, and made some pointed remarks about wondering "how many they will give us", when discussing the returning AFL players! What would that imply? It wasn't directed at the SANFL.

Also, in last year's finals, I noted a distinct easing off in our game at critical periods towards the end of our games. I didn't think it was fitness at the time, more like putting the cue in the rack. I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist, but I did begin to wonder.

We'll probably never know. Kinda like tanking though. I'm sure the players who front up genuinely want to win, as I imagine Godden is. Its just they don't have access to all the players in the pool available

And I really don't care. A few extra games of hopefully reasonable quality is a win for some of the young fellas

Jacobs was done, he played one more year, Crouch has years ahead of him, the loss of potential earnings is far more significant, plus he hasn’t been a regular like Jacobs was.

Besides Jacobs had a job here lined up anyway.
This doesn’t make a lot of sense

Jacobs was older- yep, so an injury would have potentially cost him that contract all together

Crouch played the vast majority of the year in SANFL. He’s not some guy who scraped In Eligibility off the back of returning from injury or something

Jacobs had a job here lined up anyway? He went and played a year at GWS. Getting a minor job here after that is irrelevant

None can be shitty at sauce but not crouch

Jacobs had a year offer here, he came back here after a year and got a job back here.

Crouch has been shunted to the SANFL for basically 2 years, in his mind we haven’t given him an opportunity until late, he owes us nothing.

We probably don't treat the games like finals either where as you have a hundred plus years of history drilled into the players from the other clubs. My prediction is we go out in straight sets or out in the preliminary. But wouldnt surprise me if we snuck into the GF either.
So are you saying all options are possible?

Why are the Crows such heavy favourites against Sturt? I thought it was a pretty 50/50 game.
Probably because we beat them two weeks ago with a much weaker side at sturts home ground..

This game is at our home ground.

But I agree.. this is a 50/50 game.. all SANFL games we play are because you dont know how our top up guys are gonna perform.. some weeks they are great, other weeks they are terrible..

And then you have the umpiring lotto…

I can’t see any way that Matty Crouch plays in the SANFL. A month ago he was checking out opportunities at the Beaufort Bakery, he should now get at least a 2 year contract of $500K a year from us or another club. Why risk injury (just ask Tom Doedee) until you have signed a contract?

We will have no more than 13 AFL listed players (plus Madgen) on Sunday. If we win does it mean

1) Our developing Kids are fantastic

2) Our top ups are amazing

3) The SANFL is getting weaker and weaker.

I think mainly 3) with a little bit of 1) and 2).

SANFL has no relevance to AFL. Not sure why you feel the need to draw a line.

I know both AFL reserves get a stiff deal re umpiring but it’s always a good idea to check some stats.

I wasnt talkibg about the sturt game.. I was talking in general..

The crows sometimes get a fair run from the umps.. sometimes they get absolutely reemed…

Thats why I called it a “lotto”…

That would be the same for most teams apart from WWT, I did a calculation of frees for and against earlier in the season, Port was by far on the wrong end of frees F&A, then Adelaide and Sturt.

That particular game was very interesting. The first half it seemed we were getting absolutely destroyed by the umps. At half time there was a distinct change in the umpiring. Looked like something had been said at half time because the umpiring in the second half was completely different

No, glad he’s out because it balances out us not having Wilson playing. To suggest Crouch isn’t playing due to an SANFL conspiracy is nutjobbery.
It was only a question .. I don't actually know why he isn't playing and I don't really care

Your melodramatic reaction though is glorious 🤣

Also, why isn't Wilson playing?

Yeah, noticed this too. Another Jacobs move....Didn't realise our contracts for players were optional to Aug 31....
If he's decided to not play, then it has to mean we aren't offering anything for next year. If he refuses to play, but stays - I have an issue with that.
Club first, ditch the teammates you've spent most of the year with, cause your ego rules, it's decided, you're gone. Withdraw any offers right now.

Loyalty goes both ways. We clearly haven’t seen him as a priority given he is one of handful of unsigned players left.
And it’s his profession. If we want him we should make his signature a priority to finalise

So... what do people make of Crouch not playing?

Sensible decision that everyone within the club will fully understand? Or a disgraceful lack of loyalty?

Given the reaction on here from almost everyone when Jacobs didn't play in similar circumstances I'm interested to see whether the level of vitriol will be topped

I’ve got no problems with Matt’s decision. If the reports that we’ve only offered him one year are true, then at 28 he’d be silly to go out and risk injury while his manager is trying to get a multi year deal from another club.

I also have no problem with the decision Jacobs made, however I do think there’s a lot different between his situation and Matt’s so I understand people being pissed off at Jacobs.
