Have the AFL ****ed up the scheduling for the Brisbane final? Broncos lost to the Storm last night, which means they'll finish 2nd should the Panthers beat the Cowboys.

This could lead to a scheduling clash, and resulting lower Gabba attendance and Queensland-focused TV viewership.

Isn't the Gabba final sold out? I'd be surprised if there would be more than a few dozen people who bought tickets to watch the Lions play decide to do something else. They're more likely to just not watch the NRL.

TV viewers will be affected, but given the AFL had to schedule their game days ago there's not much that could be done.

Literally lived in Australia almost my whole life, apart from the few months overseas I taught English.

Why do the AFL and NRL play afternoon games in March?

Good question, it drives me mad when they schedule day games in Perth early in the season. I'd rather sit in the driving rain than in the sun in March in Perth.

But why March? You have to understand footy in the pre-AFL days to know that. Footy never used to start until mid to late April. But as it became more professional, the season was extended. And due to ground contracts that required cricket to get the ground in October, any extra rounds had to be at the start of the season. Which is why games are in March and not October.

Why do people wear beanies and hoodies to the footy in Melbourne in March? Hell I've experienced jacket weather in Sydney in March and 42 degree heat in Newcastle in November.

March is not the hottest month or anywhere near it despite what people who stay in their basement or air con offices think.

More people will be at the beach in around Melbourne cup than the start of AFL season, because November is simply hotter than March (fake data doesn't prove anything, anyone saying otherwise doesn't go outdoors).

Ask any tradie, miner or any outdoor worker what month they prefer to work (when I was still living in Queensland I'd so as far to say March and April were my favourite months to work, because the temperature dropped down significantly in March but didn't start getting cold for Queensland standards yet - now I live in Melbourne it's definitely September and October because it stops being unbearably cold during the day but the horrid Melbourne dry heat doesn't kick in yet).

lol, Queensland is sub tropical. Very different to most of the rest of the country. Maybe that's why you're a bit confused on this.

Is anyone with AFL/MCC access able to give a rough indication of how many bays that arent sold out for the saints gws game?

General admission seems to be almost sold out apart from a few bays at the top.
Cheers!

Only selling the front 10 rows in the AFL members on level 4, currently at Q20 and it goes to Q28.
The middle and back will be available for walk-up on the day.

Also I believe they are only selling general admission tickets up to level P... so the top half of the both stands top deck should be unsold.

From what I can gather this may represent what has been sold... I have no idea about the MCC though.

Where did you get that map from?

Crowd: 8,412 at Ikon Park tonight for the AFLW.
It looked to be more and is a little disappointing given the pre match promotion and NO AFL Matches on.
Would've thought that was actually a pretty good crowd tbh considering it's no longer free entry and a neutral venue as it was Melbourne's home game. As someone who was there tonight, most of the legends stand was full. Bear in mind you can't sit in the Gardiner stand and I'm not sure about the top level of the heroes stand.

Sorry I don't agree they had a night free of any worthwhile competition no AFL or RL and had big drawing Collingwood playing 12 - 15,000 would have been as pass.
I does not bode well for the rest of the season if two Melbourne clubs can only pull 8000 on a fine night.

Yep, I thought it was only an average crowd.

Doesn't really matter what you agree with though, does it.

Bigger crowd last night than both of last year's openers combined. Also 2k more than what the AFL said they were hoping for.

MCC was doing ok, up to row V when I last checked.
I also don’t think they’ve opened up any bays in the Olympic on level 4 but may be wrong.
Imagine it will be around 55-60k

AFL members get free entry to all 10 games.

Surely they will get more that that for the finals matches.
They didn’t last season so possibly not.

8k is a good crowd for any football besides AFL, NRL, three of the supper rush by clubs, and around half the A League clubs. It is a brilliant crowd for any women’s team sport aside for the Matilda’s. We need to adjust our sights. Most games are going to get 1k to 2k which is comparable with BBLW, NRLW and better than A League W. It is also more than most VFL matches. Until the standard picks up and and a normal amount of goals are kicked (I.e. combined total over 100 points becomes the norm) then there are lot of people (like me) that find it unwatchable. Hopefully that happens. If this year’s GF has four goals kicked again, it might take even longer than expected.

The match wasn't even in the top 20 shows on FTA TV last night and had only 51,000 on Fox so sadly it wasn't only crowd that was below expectations but the TV figures were pretty abysmal as well!

Your expectations, which mean nothing. The STV and metro FTA figures were around the same mark as last year despite Collingwood getting blown out last night.

It is the opening curtain night though, flag unfurling. It was a disappointing TV ratings result and illustrates why the stakeholders need to be realistic around pay expectations, season length and venues.

Hopefully as the product improves, the standard lifts the fans take notice. There’s lots of work ahead to grow the game, expectation alignment is important so we don’t end up over investing in something that is yet to return dividends.

It was better than last year on all factors*. it rated 145K on the metro.

You are not suddenly going to 10K+ and 250K+ ratings in an instant. it is still women's sport and should be judged as such. In that realm, it is perfectly fine. And it is growing year on year.

The only women's sport(Domestic) that would have higher factors would be WBBL and Super Netball.

*not sure on ratings. but they are falling year on year so not fussed too much by that

Who is disappointed? If it's the AFL, they can be disappointed in themselves for fixturing a match that was always likely to be one-sided, thereby impacting TV ratings.

With all the rule changes in AFLW, I dunno why they've never considered making the fields 20m less at each end. Therefore 30m line instead of 50m.

One of the issues is because they can't kick far, so the ball takes forever to move from one teams attack to the other. I think this would increase the appeal of it as the ball will spend much more time in scoring areas.

Sounds like a recipe for more congestion.
