It’s really not when you factor in the Pink Lady freebies

Haw v Melb used to draw roughly the same as Haw v Rich until about a decade ago.

The fixture really hasn’t kicked on
Pink lady freebies? It cost $70 to be a part of the pink lady. Stop sulking, the crowd and atmosphere was great.

You serious? This is a great crowd! Dees supporters have been pretty solid this year

Absolutely.

Two MCG co-tenants should draw far more, especially with Hawthorn’s members having free access on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and Melbourne vying for the flag.

The end of the season held so much promise a couple of weeks ago, now we could have a ridiculously lacklustre final round.

We’re down to just 2 teams fighting for the last spot in the eight when it could have been 4 or 5, if Melbourne wins today no one can break into the top 4 either.
I rather glad.

I am not a fan in how the AFL engineered the last round, especially the late Sunday match

Maybe a system when reserved seat holders have a certain time period to redeem their tickets before they are released to the general public or GA collingwood members

think a system where you can “resell” your reserved seat up to 3 games per season and receive a decent portion of the cost back towards next seasons membership and then maybe capping it at a maximum of 4 all up with the 4th resell only being credited 50% of the cost for it

Otherwise you can imagine the shitshow where scalpers/bandwagoners with money just buy up and hold on which would impact on potential to attract new members

Its literally the best Melbourne vs Hawthorn home and away crowd since 1996 - and that includes all the times where vice versa, the Hawks were vying for a flag and Dee's were in roughly the same position hawks are in now

Its a good crowd, the harshness we cop is just insane at this point

My take, it was a more than satisfactory crowd. My thoughts leading in, considering this fixture gets a natural leg up with the Pink Lady crowd who may not attend without the cause, was anything over 50,000 would be the good headline number.

I’m assuming if ~8,000 ‘Pink Ladies’ attended, I assume only 2,000 of these would go irrespective just for the footy. So, a net ~44,000 would be solid for a dead rubber.

Having said that, without the cause, I can understand why Hawkk would be underwhelmed by a crowd theoretically in the mid 40’s for a fine Sunday fixture of two string Melbourne clubs, one vying for a Premiership. Hawkk has always supported arguments with sound analysis and I consider Hawkks views with strong weight.

Again, I thought it was still a decent crowd all the same.

Good points, it is just a decent crowd but I just don't see why anyone would expect more though

That’s their third highest. Beaten by their first year (and the excitement that brings) and by 2014 (they were in the top 8 until round 16 where they only won one of the remaining games.)

Carlton, Collingwood, Fremantle, Melbourne and Port Adelaide all exceeded their previous record season totals on the weekend.

Sydney are a small chance to do so in the last round if they can pull 40k to say goodbye to Buddy.

Every team except GWS has now exceeded their total from last year, and they only need 12k against Carlton to get there. This will be the only year in history that every team increased their attendance from the previous year.

If Sydney v Melbourne gets above 34.4k (which it will based on ticket sales, Buddy's last lap and Sydney potentially playing for a home final) we will hit 900K for the first time.
Considering we have had crowds of 3K, 8K and 11K at Alice Springs, Hobart and Metricon I reckon this is a pretty great effort for the club.

Would only be the 7th time a team outside of the 'big 4' has reached 900k.

West Coast 2018, 2019
Geelong 2010
Hawthorn 2008, 2010, 2014

As I said, Hawthorn v Sydney has outdrawn the fixture literally six times in home and away games over the past 20 years.

As have many Melbourne matches against different opposition (for example St Kilda in 2017, also a pink lady fixture in almost identical conditions )

It is a disappointing draw given many Haw and Melb pairings draw higher crowds.

I would hazard to say that it’s one of the rare pairings that doesnt draw significantly more today than they did for MCG games in the 90s.

It should draw more

The principle behind the Melbourne Hawthorn crowds in the last decade being poor is correct but get your facts right.
Melbourne St Kilda in 2017 was not the pink lady game, we gave away free GA tickets to new members to get to 54K as well as it being a massive game for both clubs. The pink lady game that year was against Hawthorn and the crowd was 38.8K.

You may be remembering 2018 against Sydney which was a Pink lady game that got 52K.

Highest ever attendance for a game at Docklands featuring GWS is 30,672 (2017 Friday night game vs Bulldogs). I would expect that to be comfortably surpassed on Sunday night.

Although, i’m not expecting an amazing crowd given the awful time slot (6:10pm start on a Sunday) and the fact that finals are already locked in so there’s not much riding on this game, especially since it’s highly likely we are playing GWS again in a final in the very next match.

One of those really weird ones has come up for this weekend;

Hawthorn v Fremantle @ MCG

Between 25-30,000 I'd say
There's a lot of very unpredictable crowds this weekend.
Essendon v Collingwood could be anywhere from 65K to 80K depending on how poor the member and MCC turnout is.
Sydney v Melbourne could be in the low 40s
Carlton v GWS and Hawthorn v GWS could both be anywhere from 25K to 40K.
West Coast crowd intrigues me too.
Hobart could be diabolical.

Good points.

Last round can always provide wired crowds. And because many are dead rubbers, surreal and lifeless apmosphere at some faves.

Bombers / Pies I think between 67-71K. Essendon members won’t go, the tears over and they’re playing for nothing after an awful loss. Pies fans may not turn up either. It will look ‘full’ from wide shots but there will be rows of empty seats all around. And a funeral like spmosphere.

Carlton despite poor time slot should draw between 32-36K I’d say given it’s likely to be a live game.

Hawks / Dockers upwards of 30K. Swabs should draw between 35-40K given its a finals like game in a decent time.

Power / Tigers, 36K as usual.

Essendon probably have more member seats than any club maybe except collingwood for mcg home games so no shows could be huge. I’d expect ponsford stand to be 85% full similar to our away turnout against Carlton in round 10. For a 70k+ crowd general public would need to be full and that mostly depends on how many will be collingwood supporters. I’m hopeful of a 70k crowd but it could be a very grim crowd especially for a sellout.

I hope a lot of Bomber members & Supporters think like me. Last game, home crowd, playing an arch rival, hopefully get payback for those close losses to them the last couple occasions & just celebrate the night with hopefully a positive finish to 2023.
Turn up Bomber fans!

You couldn’t pay me to attend this game. Essendon have been atrocious for the last 6 weeks, and I have absolutely no interest in watching them play again this year, live or otherwise.
