I really don’t get why we would take Watson at our first pick. I’d prefer to take O’Sullivan or even roll the dice with Caddy.

Have watched a fair few of Watson’s highlights and I don’t see how he’s either a strong need or a standout top 8 pick.

A showcase of The Wizard at his best over the course of the 2023 season.

These packages are fantastic mate - thanks for sharing.

Watsons skills and movement are quite amazing - I still have question marks on his defensive work, and he’ll need to focus on getting to the fall of the ball (as opposed to leading/marking) at AFL level.

There is an order which I see us choosing between him and O’Sullivan with our first (and I’d choose O’Sullivan) but I’d jump at him for our second if a miracle happened and he made it through.

Yep, agree. I'd even rather Sanders over Watson.

I do wonder how we'll be influenced by Pettys likely departure next year - if he goes we are very short down back.
Potentially.

Lots of risk in drafting an 18 year old to replace Perty as a 19-20 year old the following season.

At the very least if Petty is going don’t put all the eggs in an 18 year old draftee basket. They should be in the ear of a ready now tall to try and shake them loose at the end of 2024 as a contingency even if they draft an 18 year old tall in this draft.

It's even more risky not taking a key tall and then just hoping we can trade for one later. Cause if we can't get one then we have nothing to replace with him

Am I the only one not super excited by his highlights here?

Its the WAFL mate, playing against grown men not under 18's. Always need to lower your expectations a bit.

Certainly no top 5 pick but I think he looks fine.

Curtin looks gone then unfortunately. Sanders or Watson then! FMD! That Norf compo f*d us good. May as well take a stab at Leake then. Or go O'Sullivan. Meh
I think I prefer O'Sullivan, to the Curtin sweepstakes.

That is, unless we want to trade to the Eagles down the track, for hReid. On the return.

I still think our Tall-Defence, is our biggest need.

Curtin has potential to go midfield. O'Sullivan doesn't. And Curtin's disposal looks very very good. Not sure what you are seeing to suggest it's average? He's not getting past Hawthorn anyway. I think the smart play now is to take O'Sullivan and hope Leake is there at our next pick, if not take the best winger in Windsor. Not overly exciting imo but it covers needs. Unfortunately that North compo f*d us from getting in that top bracket of players. O'Sullivan and Leake could be a nice combo though.
If we want Mids, its either hReid or McKercher... if not these, then next big need is the backline talls.

We don't have more time to wait, to grow a Tall-Back stopper, who can play a bit.

Next years draft, will probbably have to do, to add more Mids, imv.

ps: except maybe Windsor, with our 2nd pick.

Just a tad lol.

Taking the bias glasses off then yes, on natural talent and ability Curtin is top 3 prospect.

I don't think O'Sullivan falls to us anyway. I know we've spoken to him a few times and done our background checks but Adelaide and GWS are the ones who have showed the most interest and even if he was at our pick 11 I still think we select someone one like a Leake or Windsor.
I see Curtin as a CHB or CHF type. Don't see him as a Full-Back sort... to replace Maysie.

Lever is a non-versatile semi tall, 3rd tall back. Not a 2nd tall back. - could pinch at CHF as a defensive tall forward. and that's about it.

We cannot have him (lever) as our tall back, without May being there. But May can play without lever there.
Petty is as good as gone in 12 months time.

We are desperate for O'S.

Can’t wait til we take Sanders and play him out of position on a half forward flank for five years waiting for Viney to retire.

Yeah that risk makes me shudder too. Although if he's best available, and with Qs over Clarry, Gus and possibly playing Trac more forward, maybe it makes sense.

Just putting it out there - What if Curtin was available at 6 and we did something like this:

Dees trade out pick 6 for WC's future first and their pick 37.
Dees then trade picks 37 and 42 to GC for pick 27. (More points for GC)
Dees then trade 27 and our future first to Geelong for pick 8.

In 2024, Dees trade WC first round pick (likely between 1-4) for Ben King after we lose Petty to Adelaide.

Leaves us with picks 8 and 11 this year, King as replacement for Petty, and then whatever picks we get for Petty in trade.

Thoughts?

Doubt Geelong would do it.

That’s be fantastic but I thought of 2 points;

1) I can’t see Geelong wanting to do that trade.
2) King is a free agent (R) next year so I don’t think we would need to trade.

Maybe, but they hate early picks. Plus, getting 27 and (let's say) 14 next year puts them ahead by the equivalent of pick 48 as well.

Yeah, but this is where the points table doesnt really work coz it doesnt take into account the depth of a particular draft. 27 this year could be worth 40 or worse any other year.

King is out of contract but not a free agent. (I think we've had that discussion before?)

You might be right on Geelong, their draft hand is thin this year, but seems like most teams are only using a few picks this year so worth a shot.
