The overall 'strength' of the draft compared to other years doesn't seem relevant.
We aren't Tasmania coming in to draft a whole team.

We hold picks 12, 45, 55 and have an academy member to match bidding on.

Sliding pick 12 back would allow us to improve our later selections this year (ahead of matching the bid) or gain future selections, or both and aren't relying on immediate impact from any draftee, while hopefully avoiding adding more mids.

Splitting 12 in a weak draft is a strange option.

Not when I’m happy with Archer Reid/Schroenberg and then we get another selection. I’ve said for a while I know many don’t but unless it’s for Curtin (which is nigh impossible) wouldn’t bother trading up. Many on here do like Murphy I know, but there isn’t much between him and the next couple of defenders we could get at say norths picks 17/18

We are absolute mugs if we think Geelong are going to be reasonable to deal with.

They'd only accept 12 +F1st + the North compo pick.

I wouldn't even bother calling them.

Won't be cheap but sometimes you just grab the 10 yr CHB that's a local

List is in a good place so we can get the guys we want

3 picks under 19 to move up 4 spots is ridiculous.

But I am guessing Mackie and Geelong think some team would be stupid enough to do that.

I think within reason we go for it

Nate Caddy a player possible which also suits us perfectly

Two possibles at that pick that'd I'd just about throw a future first without too much fuss

Get the players we really rate our 22 is under control

North can blow our offer out of the water. In fact that’s what I think they do. They have 15,17,18 plus their f2 (unless they have traded it but don’t think they have)

This! Didn’t everyone see how bad they were in the Ratagolea trade?

Agreed, draft picks are worthless if you're not actually picking the players you want that can have an impact and contribute to your best 22.

We've also gone all in over the trade period which should figure us as a top six prospect for the next few years at the very least.

The consequence is that all of our first round picks will end up in the mid to late teens for the foreseeable future, particularly once you factor in any potential academy and father son picks to the mix.

We might as well bundle these up to potentially nab a transformative player to add to the list while the team is still evolving.

Now of course O'Sullivan could also turn out to be a bust but these are the sort of risks we can take when, as you said, the list is in a good enough place to accommodate such an aggressive manoeuvre.

I dont care what poistion the potential 12 (or whatever position it slides to) may play, It will come down to interviews and which kid has the best aptitude for hard work and quick learning. Outside the top 5 or 6 it's a very even lot.... Dalrymple and the psychologists...?

I don't really trust our recruiters with our first rounder. Their record (outside of the academy kids) is pretty poor.

For the last decade its been:

2012: Pick 22, Dean Towers. Not a hit, but also not really a first rounder
2013: Pick 15 Zac Jones: On track for 200 games. Didn't work out for us but not a shit player
2016: Pick 13: Florent, Pick 21: Hayward: Both on track for 200 games
2017: Pick 14: Matt Ling. Big miss
2019: Pick 5: Dylan Stephens: Big miss
2020: Pick 4: Logan Mcdonald: Too early to tell
2021: Pick 18 Angus Sheldrick: Too early to tell
2022: Pick 20: Jacob Konstanty: Too early to tell.

We haven't actually had that many high first round picks, and with what we've had, we're as likely to draft a 200 game player as a bust.

What was really unforgivable about the Stephens selection was he was pick 5, and it is actually hard to stuff up a top 5 selection that badly, along with the fact so many really good players were selected after him.
