Guys, I keep deleting posts referencing this, but can we move away from suggesting or making juvenile jokes about the bloodlines of players.

This is a public forum and parents of players do read here.

#17 Will McCabe (Central District/South Australia)

While quiet in the early stages, McCabe got to work in term two as he began to rise for his marks. The Hawthorn father-son candidate and South Australian Under 16 MVP got into positions to intercept, leaning on his athleticism to at least split contests before following up. He showed off his exciting mobility with a flying mark in the third quarter, and a fluent spin after recovering a ground ball. Still raw at 196cm, but with plenty to work with.

How much game time did McCabe get?

We HAVE to start nailing some 'sons of guns' soon.....
Why?

Just so we have a couple of Tyler / Callum Brown equivalents?

If the kids aren’t up to it, so be it. Move on to someone who is, but didn’t have a parent run around in brown and gold in the previous decades.

It’s not like the club can control how good “eligible” humans are at the sport their parents excelled at.

I think he's more suggesting that some of them have to be good enough soon, we haven't really had any luck with them being good enough.

Why? Because I want really good players at our club, whatever the source, and father-son has been an excellent and easy source of great players for many other clubs. Just not us. Not that difficult.

Id be happy to rookie list one or two that shows promise.

Agree - really good players at our club is great.

Disagree it’s been an excellent/easy source for great players at other clubs.

On the contrary very few clubs actually get players below market value through F/S.

It’s primarily romantic and whilst the occasional Daicos / Ablett Jr type gets picked up, who makes a genuine impact above / beyond where they would’ve been drafted in the open market……they’re actually very rare.

The vast majority of kids of ex-AFL players don’t make the level and/or don’t exceed the output of their fathers.

Geelong probably don’t win any of their 4 flags without Scarlett Ablett and Hawkins.

Correct, but IMO only two other clubs could possibly point to F/S success of that nature.

Collingwood currently have Daicos x 2 and Moore. They also got Shaw x 2 and Nick Davis in the past 20 years.

Dogs currently have Liberatore, Hunter, West, Darcy & Wallis.

Two other clubs who appears to have successful F/S returns.

That leaves 15 other clubs with little to show under the F/S rule.

It’s well and truly over-rated.

Richo, Jonathan brown, SOS to name a few. You don’t need multiple. Any one of the above inserted into your team for peanuts is massive for a club.

Will McCabe did a few good things, show cased his speed and contest ability, but lacked a few intercept marks, seemed a bit awed at the occasion, very lean still, i would like to see more of his forward craft, i think he was on the bench for a bit, noticed him missing a couple times for long periods, i dont remember him getting beaten in a contest, but he did kick a turn over for a shot on goal 45m out once, he isnt the polished product like Curtin who has been labelled a top 5 player for over a year already in the draft section, despite his knee injury that kept him out of most of this year, but McCabe has some great athletic potential and footy potential, so we'll wait and see how he goes next year, at this stage i have him ranked mid 20's in a strongish year for talent.

another player i liked turns out to have a Hawthorn connection is Will Lorenz (grandson of Graham Arthur) small world.

Adding to this, Graham's dad, Alan, played for Essendon and Alan's brother, Harold, played for North Melbourne.

SOS didn’t go to Carlton as father / son. Jack did, and so did Ben (who never played a senior game). Neither have proven to be particularly useful. As I said, far more misses than hits. It’s well and truly over-rated as a source of talent.

I’ll never forget the self-flagellation some had here over poor Dev Brereton. He was never going to be more than a solid local park player. Neither will Calsher Dear IMHO.

You sure about that? Son Of Serge. Sergio Silvagni - Carlton great.

Not in the sense we know it under the AFL draft system.

I’m aware his dad was a Carlton legend too, but the concept of clubs bidding, player choosing, and then picks shifting around in the draft didn’t exist in 1986 (obviously as there was no draft).

Isn’t that just a reflection of stars representing only say 5% of players? Its been a free hit for heaps of clubs, many of whom have at least one champion from this source. Obviously most don’t become stars, just like most draft picks don’t either.
