Guys, I keep deleting posts referencing this, but can we move away from suggesting or making juvenile jokes about the bloodlines of players.

This is a public forum and parents of players do read here.

Seems likely that McCabe was in mind tonight.

Traded out a pick in the 20s and brought in some later points with the Brissy deal.

If McCabe ends up going soon after our 1st this Weddle trade will be inspired.
Interesting to see if we move on the dogs 2nd tonight as well. You generally get far better value trading in the draft year then using futures however (see how well Brisbane has done) but we’ve shown if rate a guy we’ll have a swing.

We need some luck with F/S for a change and McCabe to somehow be a top 15 or so selection in 2023.

That was part of the trading strategy on draft night.

Been told the club is currently expecting him to go between pick 10-20, so our 2nd and 3rd round picks would likely get swallowed up, and given the strong draft we’re unlikely to be able to trade forward.

The flow on from all this is:
2022 - two first rounders and a second rounder.
2023 - two first rounders (our first pick plus McCabe).

There would have been plenty of opportunities to trade out the 2023 2nd and 3rd round picks prior to next year's draft but I hear what you are saying.

The fact of the matter is we wanted Weddle and were forced to trade those future selections

With bidding on F/S prospects are we required to use our nearest pick or can we bundle up later ones?

For instance if McCabe goes pick 18 and we have pick 22, 50, 51, 52 - are we required to use pick 22 or could we use the three later picks and keep pick 22?

We're required to use the next pick.

This is what happened when Sydney screwed GWS, they had to use 16 to match

I hope that wasn't t the strategy, I hope we simply just wanted Weddle really badly. 12 months out from the draft Jeka was expected to go between 10-20 so a lot can change.

Lets not get too carried away with McCabe, He wasn’t good enough play in the U18 Champs this year (there were quite a few 17 year olds that played), so was given an exemption to play in the U16s as an overager. So while he may be a very good player, there is a fair chance he won’t be a first rounder. Need to see how he goes next season.

Not entirely true, we could use the 5 minutes to trade 22 for a future 2nd or something and then match so we get somewhat close to 22 value the following year and only use the 50's picks to match.
No you can't, the team required to bid can't trade.

Yeah but Gary Ablett Jnr went at #40, Matthew Scarlett at #45 and Tomahawk at #41 - all late 2nd rounders. None considered anywhere near a first rounder.

So there’s that. 🤪

Don’t get carried away with father/sons and where they might get selected. If the kid is in the radar in 2023, we have the time / scope to get the picks we need.

Still have some dead wood to trade out if there’s a willing buyer.

It's just back then you could take any potential father son with a 3rd round selection.

Keeping in mind Lawrence was being talked as a jet mid season and wasn’t even rookied, I reckon we keep expectations in check on McCabe

Yeah, no one called him a jet. Pretty much anyone speaking about him said we might pick him up late in the ND and that was pretty much it.

Completely different as you could get an F/S for a 3rd back then, no stupid points system.

Finn's little brother, Ned Maginess is also available. Have only heard sporadic info about him.

Not sure how good he is though. Anyone have an idea.

No, don't think this is right. Dons were looking to trade only when a bid was made and had options ready. if no one traded, then they would have used up the pick 22 to match the bid on Davey.

remember this happening in an earlier draft. The risk is you have only 5 mins to make the move, can ask for an xtra min or 2 at best. so gotta have your ducks lined up. Pity no club was ready to make Bombers pay.
