Guys, I keep deleting posts referencing this, but can we move away from suggesting or making juvenile jokes about the bloodlines of players.

This is a public forum and parents of players do read here.

Just a few of the better Rookie draftees

Dean Cox
Rory Laird
Luke Breust
Ben Rutten
Josh Gibson
Brad Sewel
Jeremy McGovern
Matt Priddis
Jayden Short
Matt Boyd

Plenty of premierships, all Australians, b&fs and even a brownlow

It's the players who need to tank the draft to better improve their chances at a premiership, not the clubs.

But the rest of em were 18 right?
Sure, there are a couple of exemptions there from 12/13 years ago, but most, like Jonas who was playing SANFL seniors as an 18 year old, had much stronger draft years than Dear. McGovern might be the closest to Dear - his dad played AFL and did not have a strong draft year, but until 17 he lived in the country so only had one year in the system.

So do you think that the club should draft Dear?

Ok, I'll play. I picked the 2010 rookie draft completely randomly. Then, to make sure I didn't pick a unicorn year I looked at the following year. I didn't need to look any further to prove my point.

The following players were all 18 when rookie drafted.

2010 Rookie Draft
Jeremy McGovern
Jason Johannisen
Tom Jonas
Sam Menegola
Luke Dahlhaus
Will Langford

2011 Rookie Draft
Jack Crisp
Rory Laird
Harry Cunningham
Sam Frost
Marley Williams
Mark Blicavs
Lin Jong
I think Walshawk was referring to 'stars', not just any players who were drafted? Yes/No?

I'd place Jai above all the listed above in the careers already except McGovern, Bilcavs and Laird who have become exceptional players from the rookie list.

Most of the others, if playing for Hawthorn since being drafted, would be out equivalent to Tom Murphy, Harry Morrison or Kosi

Newcombe was drafted the year after was eiligible. Which was my poimt. How hard is this?
You said he wasn't drafted, now you are saying he was drafted. I'm lost on what your "poimt" is.

He's a tall and they are notoriously slow to develop.

Nothing may come of it or he could win a norm smith like his Dad. I'm prepared to risk a rookie spot.

I was talking about getting drafted (immediately) after an ordinary U18s campaign. Newcombe wasn’t drafted until he played at Box Hill as we all know. I am saying the Dear is unlikely to be drafted by us as a father son based on what he has shown. We are all well aware that some great players enter the system at later dates, but you can only list a father son in their draft year.

If he doesn’t get picked up anywhere we could leave a spot open for the SSP and then rookie list him anyway.

No point giving the kid false hope if we have decided he’s not worth taking (yet).

Reality is he didn’t make Vic Metro, has played 8 NAB games, kicking 4 goals (3 on one game and none in 6 games) and been named once in the best players.
I'm not saying Dear is a worldbeater or we have to pick him up. But mate give him some credit. He has played 10 of 12 games and has not missed a game since early June. And from those 10 games he has kicked 12 goals including two bags of 3.

He's a young kid working his backside off, take the 30 seconds it takes to get your stats right.

Sorry - not sure why the Coates League link I used had different stats, and they were the ones I was quoting, but now I’ve tried again and found yours - which are indeed correct.

So it’s slightly better than what I’d seen, one extra mention in the best players and more consistently kicking a goal / game.

Argument still stands, he won’t get picked up by anyone in that output, but I admit the error (can’t explain why the stats I found were different).

HAWKS FATHER-SON IN SIGHTS

HAWTHORN father-son prospect Calsher Dear enjoyed one of the best games of his season last week as he generates interest ahead of this November's draft.

Dear, the son of the late Hawthorn premiership player Paul, kicked 2.2 from 20 disposals and six marks in an impressive display in attack for the Sandringham Dragons in the Coates Talent League.

Against the Oakleigh Chargers, the 194cm prospect showed his marking strength and continued a run of form that included kicking 1.4 from 21 disposals against the Western Jets three weeks ago.

He has booted 14.17 in 11 games this season and could be a later draft option for the Hawks, who will get first call on him as a father-son.

Paul Dear played 123 games and kicked 80 goals for the Hawks, including being the 1991 Norm Smith medallist.

The Hawks will also get first access to fellow father-son Will McCabe at this year's draft, while they have had Tew Jiath approved as a Next Generation Academy prospect after his nomination had been pending in recent months.

Jiath, the younger brother of current Hawk Changkuoth, has risen up draft boards and may not be available to Hawthorn after pick 40, when it will be able to match an NGA bid. – Callum Twomey

Great to hear on Dear

I really hope we take the punt on Dear, I think he has a lot of room for development where an AFL system could help. Its a free hit so no risk for some potential reward.
He is starting behind the 8 ball here. His interest in football waned as his father got sick. Who could blame him. I mean football would have been the last thing on my mind. That has set him back in terms of endurance and fitness. I am glad he is having an impact at Coates level. It means he has worked really hard to get back to where he is now. Good on him and I wouldn't be averse to giving him a shot.

Has he been down at the club much TheFourPillars?
We know McCabe has been doing things with the club but on Dear I have no knowledge.

If we nominate him for F/S and no-one drafts him, do we then have the chance to automatically put him in as a Category B list player? Thought that was the go with Ben Jarman
No, we can automatically put him as a Cat A rookie if overlooked in the National Draft, but it's not off-list in the Cat B spots.

At any rate, Cat B is likely to be some combination of Bennetts, O'Hara and TJ next year - a maximum of two of them.

Hmm TJ looking more and more likely to be drafted before 40...hope he falls to us though.
