Guys, I keep deleting posts referencing this, but can we move away from suggesting or making juvenile jokes about the bloodlines of players.

This is a public forum and parents of players do read here.

Yeap, and there are so many other examples. Maturity, growth (physical and mental), family life, economics (having to work rather than train) and the old fashioned the coach just didn't like them. What we are now starting to seeing is Coates League is just one pathway.
There have always been players added to lists after their draft year, but nowadays no players get drafted at 18 unless they star in the U18s. Dear will likely have to proves his wares in the VFL in order to get onto a list.

Are you saying we should draft him now?

Young Calsher is hoping to be drafted to an AFL club. Let’s hope the Hawks have seen enough potential and are keen. Good luck young man 💫💫🤎💛

Why does he refer to himself in the third person? lol

That's just not true. Plenty of 18 year olds get picked up as rookies and become stars. None of them have starred at u18 level. All players develop at different rates.

Fair enough. I am curious to know which players you are referring to?
Just a few of the better Rookie draftees

Dean Cox
Rory Laird
Luke Breust
Ben Rutten
Josh Gibson
Brad Sewel
Jeremy McGovern
Matt Priddis
Jayden Short
Matt Boyd

Plenty of premierships, all Australians, b&fs and even a brownlow

You are missing my point. Most of these were not drafted at 18. Off the top of my head all besides Bruest were 19 or older and drafted out of state leagues. My original statement was that players who don’t play well in U18s usually miss being drafted that year. I.e. Let’s hope Dear comes good at a later stage like the above players, but that he has not shown enough to get onto our list this year.

U19’s but yeah, that side had to move up a division as they were belting sides weekly.

I’m not sure you’d take too much from those games.
Correct.

Their division, has only 6 teams and they have a percentage of 260% played the bottom side who are running at 41%.

Read nothing into under 19 VAFA game in August as there’s heaps of lop-sided results with lowly teams like Parkdale struggling to field a full 22.

He should be playing senior Premier B at this stage if he’s to be a rookie chance.

Going to Box Hill for a preseason would make sense.

Newcombe was drafted the year after was eiligible. Which was my poimt. How hard is this?
There was no U18 competition in his draft year due to COVID.

Huge factor in him being overlooked - he had no games to play that year

In 2019, which would have been his bottom age year, he wasn’t listed by Gippsland as they traditionally fill their list with top agers and have very few spots for u17s.

Anyhow, I think it’s pretty clear we take McCabe and both N.
Maginness and C. Dear miss out, but hopefully make their way to Box Hill so we can keep an eye on their development .

Im hopeful we at least Nominate Dear so we can rookie list him if he doesn’t get picked up.

If he doesn’t get picked up anywhere we could leave a spot open for the SSP and then rookie list him anyway.

No point giving the kid false hope if we have decided he’s not worth taking (yet).

Reality is he didn’t make Vic Metro, has played 8 NAB games, kicking 4 goals (3 on one game and none in 6 games) and been named once in the best players.

It is not like Hawthorn to pick father sons on sentiment alone. They are either good enough or not. As others have said they have the opportunity to show their wares at VFL level if they miss being drafted this year.

And nor should we. If they aren’t at the level, I have no interest in wasting a list spot because their dad played. Seems unlikely Dear is at the level

Not 100% sure but aren’t Sewell, cox and Gibson the only mature ages in that group? Pretty sure the rest were rookied in their under 18 year

Ok, I'll play. I picked the 2010 rookie draft completely randomly. Then, to make sure I didn't pick a unicorn year I looked at the following year. I didn't need to look any further to prove my point.

The following players were all 18 when rookie drafted.

2010 Rookie Draft
Jeremy McGovern
Jason Johannisen
Tom Jonas
Sam Menegola
Luke Dahlhaus
Will Langford

2011 Rookie Draft
Jack Crisp
Rory Laird
Harry Cunningham
Sam Frost
Marley Williams
Mark Blicavs
Lin Jong

Think Newks U18 year was actually 2019, so wasn’t actually affected by Covid. Just an anomaly.
