Just some notes from pre-season open training for any that are interested.

  • If the club is seriously bang on about heat training then they couldn’t have scheduled their trip better. Was scorching hot out there at 9:00. Ball soup by 11 in the cheap seats.
  • Rehab group was out doing their thing early: Marshall, Allir, McKenzie, Georgiades and Sinn.
  • Mentioned Sinn’s uncanny resemblance. Dudes a lot bigger than you think.
  • Surprised about Allir being in the rehab group.
  • Squad got divvied up into zones to run drills for the first hour. Mitch and the rehab group kept running drills.
  • Next hour was intermingled drills between zones. Quarterback running end-to-end, chaos ball, CHF scrimmages, switching play thru zones and the likes.
  • They then divvied up the home and away gear and played out an abbreviated 4qtr simulation.
  • It was a low contact run through but it was pretty god damn hot. Even for a hungover Queenslander, they ran it out well and solid.
  • Wasn’t entirely clued in on the youngsters we brought in but a couple were faster than a shit thru a fart.
  • The team finished off signing autographs and chatting.

I could castigate and embolden players with what I saw but truth be told it was a preseason training session and I was hungover as a low flying bottle Ron Zacapa. Did I mention the heatwave and the 400km round trip?

I don’t get the opportunity to watch these training sessions by geographical implications, but by the eye, even in a 25% effort, scorching hot pre-season training hit out, you can see the class. All the usual suspects.

Walsh showed a bit.

I think it was Tommy A that was running faster than a worksite dunny.

Wines looks super “toight” and fit.

Boak still covers the grass with ease.

Butters is just creative as fcuk

Rozee was Rozee

Burton looked surprisingly great

SPP was all over it like a boss

Willie looks mint. Don’t get any hate towards him to be honest

Esava is a unit and moves well

Sweet moves well and is broad as ****

Couple players looked cooked after a hard week also but as I need to elude, I dont know f all

I'm talking about regular training, I care not for spectator training.

Over the past few weeks I've just had this growing feeling in my bones that we're set for a bit of a step backwards this year. Just feel like the Hinkley era malaise after a high finishing year will again hit us next year, and we'll bomb out of the 8. Don't have significant reason, it's just a gut feel.

Just wish we had a new coach and that spark of enthusiasm we need to take that next step on and off field as a club.

Because Hinkley’s job is safe until 2025, there’s going to be no incentive for us to win in 2024.

I guarantee you we won’t win as many close games as we did last year.
