Wandered down and caught about 45 minutes of match sim this morning.

Didn’t see Rozee out there today - likely due to birthday. In his absence pretty much all the ball went through Butters and used it so well. Can definitely tell he’s gained a yard of pace and improved on his fitness often working back into defence to help transition the footy.
Said it last week but jeez Esava is going to be an asset for us. BZT was also a lot better today.
DBJ still lost at half forward, fluffed a set shot right in front as well.
Kane Farrell much more involved today.
Jordan Sweet looks very comfortable as number 1 ruck - I’m pretty sure Soldo was in the pink hat playing deep forward (hard to tell as I was on other side of oval)
I’m on the Jackson Mead hype train
Ollie Wines was involved in a little bit of everything, expecting a bit more mid minutes this year
Jase Burgoyne does some nice things but plays a bit timid.
Tom Clurey was actually ok on a wing again. I don’t expect him to play there in the real stuff though.
Willem Drew doesn’t take a backwards step even at training
Aliir was able to play a lot looser in defence today and looked dangerous because of it. A few intercept marks and picked some nice options out of defence…hoping he can return to 2022 form.
Ollie Lord leads at the footy very nicely, and wasn’t afraid split the pack a couple times.
Ryan Burton took every kick out
Lachie Jones very lively and plenty of instructions being yelled to set up the back 6. I think he’s in for a big year

A few comments on game style…when the speed comes off the footy and we play more possession football we look seriously average. Just a lot of poor decision making and lack of players finding space - I would’ve thought this would be easier in match sim but maybe it’s the opposite.

Our forward structure is really crowded, we line up on the field like an ammos team. The only space we allow ourselves is directly in front of goal which is quickly filled up by players getting back to help defend. A lot of low percentage shots at goal

Mead is an interesting one for me, he reminds me of Sam Mitchell & seems too talented to be running around in the Magoos each week. Like Sam, he either plays midfield or doesn’t play at all.

I’d run him through the mid throughout February/March and see how he responds. I’d even push Rozee out to a wing where he would still get plenty of the ball and dominate in the open spaces. It’s all about finding the right balance and getting the best out of each individuals skillset.
Lets have one of our best clearance players in ruck contests in Rozee sitting on a wing while we can have Mead in the middle.

Soldo forward is going to happen.

If it's not at the expense of Dixon it could be Finlayson.

Ollie Lord / Marshall / Soldo

I'm in agreement we didn't pick him up not to play him but if Jordan Sweet is looking the part as 1st Ruck Port will not start him in the sanfl. We will try and keep him out there.

Sweet has been good in the ruck contest and works hard to get the ball when it hits the ground, block for others and tackle opponents when its required. With Soldo being injured its not possible to compare their relative strengths at this stage. At least its good to know Sweet is showing he's up to the job if called upon.

I’m happy to be wrong, but I think Mead will surprise a few people this year. I don’t see the harm in throwing Rozee on a wing, he’ll still rack up 25-30 possessions per game. He is a good clearance player, but JHF, Butters & Drew are all ahead of him in that category.
Even if any of this was true (and none of it is), you've also jumped Mead ahead of a bloke who won a Brownlow as an inside mid two years ago.

Mead will play 0-5 games this year and he'll be gone when his contract expires. He won't get picked up anywhere else either. And not even his mum would pick him in the midfield ahead of Connor Rozee. Just lol.

Lol.

Two of the worst ideas I've ever seen on this board posted consecutively. Jackson Mead ahead of Connor Rozee in the midfield and Ivan Soldo ahead of Jeremy Finlayson as a forward. **** me dead. If I was a mole deliberately trying to bring Port down from the inside, I wouldn't make bad moves this obvious.

Love hearing year after year our forward structure is essentially long and high to a pack and clog up the forward line.

That game style doesn’t win premierships. We need to bloody attack and open it up for god sake. Teams on the bottom of the ladder manage to have better functioning forward lines than ours.

So nothing's changed! Great!

I just hope they’re looking hungry and determined on the track and not content with last years shit show. The start to 2022 after getting absolutely reamed in a home prelim by a frequent flying western bulldogs team running on fumes was arguably the biggest indictment on the Hinkley reign.

How they got complacent after that embarrassing finals defeat is beyond me.

Premiership aren’t won in January but the foundations are laid.

I’m not too concerned about what individual players are burning the track, I’m more interested in how they’re looking as a collective and that they are ready to hit the ground running right from the star this year. Not wait until a round 4 touch on the goal line and a cry from Hinkley to snap it to gear.

Play for yourselves and your club, not Hinkley.

I dont get why Mcentee and DBJ get half forward passes but we seem content on Mead being centre square or bust
