Football experience memory

Not all can have it because it is a number thingee, and equates to number of years, that have followed port adelaide. In other words how old yu are. Some posters obviously have it; 1954, nyland, ford fairlane, thundercloud, russel ebert handball……..and a lot others.

You can read club histories, visit the photos in the club. read players biographies, read big footy posts but deep inside memory means yu can possibly revisit the time, the occasion, the scene. Unley oval has/had a deep northern pocket which was shoulder to shoulder attendance with a record crowd We were playing a different type of game trying to find the body while the opposition had skilled players and a different way. Rick Davies flogged chris Natt in the big one. and back at lincoln high a port team manager for oranges etc. for weeks after would not talk about that grandee or football. They took it hard and had to wear it. Read the Wikipedia history oF Sturt.

So we have had our real down times: west lakes before adelaide oval. But resilience, persistence, hard work, grafting, effort and belief has put us on the national stage. We have grown to 60000 STRONG and can rock the oval when in full voice.

Come on the footy season.

This year will be different. I think that if we make top 4 we will win it

Any advice for us youngsters on who to vote for in the board election?

Your posts about the past are 100x more interesting than your posts about the present. Genuinely enjoy them.

Went to boston fc reunion couple of years back and Abernathy was ok as master of ceremony. The 2 wakelins spoke brilliantly and leslie and abba had a good public chat. Asked tredrea on way into a game re polec and he said straight out had been gone for awhile. So what yu see publicly is probably what you get.

So you're voting for Abernathy because he's a better MC than Tredrea?

We're in the middle of the worst stretch in club history. You glossed over that. 17 years since a GF and 20 since a flag. Forget the Footy Park days, this is the worst spot we've been in. Stale, mediocrity accepting, boring and with almost zero atmosphere at our games.

It's good to see you are hyped for the footy season. I am a bit hyped too.

I will say that I would like to give more focussed reasons while we got to the national stage and it is because we have won many premierships and dominated the local competition, that is, we were successful in the finals. This is because of the excellence of our previous administration, coaches and players with the likes of Fos Williams, Bob Quinn, John Cahill, Russell Ebert, etc.

If we had David Kocklebrother and Kenny Average running the show during our SANFL days, we would still be there.

Imo the crowd enjoy the entertainment provided and compared when we went into afl really only get going when we are winning.

Like your posts and information, analysis. Yes credit to the previous greats they got us there. The AFL IS a different reality and it is so much harder to get into the window of winning the big game. This year the list looks to have covered the short comings of last year, early days.

Every league has good clubs, mediocre clubs and bad clubs. Some of the SANFL clubs thought the SANFL was a tough competition too.

We have lost our way as a club. People laugh at thundercloud's posts but that 'ah well, it's hard to win in the AFL!' thinking is exactly the attitude of those who run the club. Our premiership drought is 20 years but if that attitude persists it will become 100.

The entertainment provided at a football game is the football.

The football quality delivered varies from boring dross to splattered faeces.

Imagine Koch and Hinkley running the Magpies in the SANFL for 11 years from the mid-80s without making a grand final and telling everyone how tough it is to compete in the second best competition in the land and how it's unreasonable to think a little blue collar battler like us could ascend into the hallowed ranks of the AFL like the recently promoted Sturtwood.
