Like most of society they either take illegal drugs themselves or know other people that do and don't care.

Geez I'd rather a player pop some MDMA a couple of times a year than get on the piss after every game like they used to.

Testing for non-PEDs and suspending after one positive would be ridiculous. We don't do that in broader society.

Professional athletes aren't subject to the laxness we see in society though. They are required to adhere to the expectations and regulations of WADA etc. Transgress and you are punished swiftly and without apology.

Well, that's the case for most professional sports people. For whatever reason the AFL doesn't have the courage to enforce the same integrity within its game, and has blurred that line for its participants.

AFL players are subject to WADA's rules and punishments like every other sport. They enforce it the same. I'm not sure what you mean by the bolded (my emphasis).

I was thinking of WADA vs AFL a few years ago when I wrote that.

The AFL didn't interpret the evidence with the same resolute adherence to the rules and spirit of the anti-doping policy as WADA did. They lacked the courage and were hoping to sweep it under the carpet.

Anyhow, we're getting wildly OT here ....best get back to it.

The upside is clear: many supporters, the media and gambling companies clearly want it.

If you don’t care either way, great! It will make no difference to you whether it’s changed or not.
It will make a massive difference. We might be able to find posts in here about injuries and not club communication. I would rather they roll out the quickest possible version yesterday.

And reading through this thread many supporters are not fussed one way or the other, as for the gambling companies (which I suspect is the real reason behind this) they can get stuffed as far as I'm concerned.

You're right, it makes absolutely no difference to me, and I'm not dying on any hill defending the clubs approach either, just stating my views.

I would be prepared to bet that the gambling companies have access to all the information they want about significant injuries.

It's the punters who lose money due to lack of information - you know, the ones whose losses are passed on by the gambling companies to the AFL, Clubs and Players.

Probably misses the Norf game and maybe even the Dons because of how cautious we are, but good news nonetheless.
I just hope we can bring Danger in one week and Cameron the next. Sticking to one change at a time feels like the best way to get continuity and have a match-sit squad. As good as it has been some weeks to bring 3 or 4 in at once, mostly the team has felt out of sync or leggy as the match went on.

Positive injury update from Lloyd today.

  • Dangerfield did full training session on Sunday, will be very close to a return this week
  • no mention of shoulder injury for JC, only that he's working through concussion protocols
  • Ratugolea should be available
  • C Guthrie out of moonboot and resuming running later this week
  • Menegola, Mullin and Neale pulled up well from VFL
  • Simpson out for short term with hand tendon injury

"Very close to a return" = see you Vs Essendon, Danger.

Good news about Guthrie though. Maybe he's still a chance to come in for finals? 8 weeks to build fitness and conditioning?

Not with Danger! "Very close to return" for Danger means "I wanted to play last week. The Club made me see sense, so this week for sure!"

How so, I can't see how the clubs indicating a player will be out 2-4 weeks or short/medium term should make any difference.

If the bookies know a star player or players will be out for longer than the club is letting on, then they can use that information in their modelling for the longer term markets (team to make the top8, top4, premiership, etc) whereas punters cannot.

The upshot being that the bookies can then offer prices that whilst being shorter than good value, look longer than good value to a model that assumed theses players would return earlier.

Scott is hopeful Cameron will return for next week's clash with North Melbourne.

"The pleasing thing for me is he looks normal around the place, he is his happy self," Scott said.

"He's in the concussion protocols. He has a bit of a shoulder issue from that contact as well.

"I'm optimistic that once he's out of the protocols he'll be ready to play.

"He will probably have a shoulder strapped up when he comes back."

I think that fantasy is a bigger driver than Gambling odds, fantasy is a huge part of the game and people want to know how long players will be out before making moves

Dual Carji Greeves medallist Cam Guthrie is making progress in his recovery from toe surgery and aiming for a return before the end of the home and away season.

The 30-year-old hasn't played since round six due to the lingering toe issue that the Cats initially hoped would recover with rest before opting for surgical intervention.

Guthrie is out of a moonboot and building up his conditioning with round 23 or 24 understood to be a target in mind, if not earlier if things go to plan for the Victorian.

Good to hear Lloyd say Conway would be ready to play in 2 weeks.

Bad that Willis was once again not mentioned... Honestly thinking something sus is going on now. No updates for this long gives the mind a green light to start wandering in unusual directions regarding why he isn't getting a mention.
