GMHBA Health Update | Round 22

Geelong Cats GM of Football Simon Lloyd shares the latest news in the GMHBA Health Update for Round 22

Scans have unfortunately revealed Geelong Premiership defender Jack Henry has suffered a lisfranc ligament injury (middle region of the foot), after his foot was stood on during the first half of last Saturday night’s match against Port Adelaide.

The injury is different to the one Henry sustained in the pre-season and is to the opposite foot.

Geelong General Manager of Football Simon Lloyd said the Club was disappointed for Henry.

“We were surprised to see the results of the scans as the incident occurred innocuously during the game. Our medical team will now work through the options available to provide the optimal outcome for Jack and determine how long he will be sidelined for.

“We are all disappointed for Jack, he is a very important player for us, not just with his flexibility to play a number of roles, but because of his calm head and stability he provides down back.

“We know Jack’s work ethic and the attitude he has towards his training and football and know he will attack his rehab in the same manner.”

In other news, Mark Blicavs and Tom Hawkins are advancing in their respective programs following hamstring injuries.

Mark Blicavs ran today and, as Mark can do, ran very well. So he’ll be part of the reconditioning program, and that will be his focus at the moment,” Lloyd said.

Tom Hawkins is running well, his strength has improved. He’s hitting all the markers that he needs to hit, and he’ll complete main training on Wednesday.”

Gary Rohan is also expected to be available for Friday night’s clash with Collingwood as he continues to manage an irritated ankle.

Gary Rohan’s ankle is better than what it was this time last week. He has had an ankle irritation for a small period of time, and we’ll need to adjust his program, but we expect him to be available to play,” Lloyd said.

The news is promising for Cameron Guthrie, who is drawing ever nearer a return from surgery on his toe, while young Cat Flynn Kroeger is expected to play his first game for the season in the VFL on Saturday.

“Cam will partake this week in main training, which is exciting for Cam, and he’s getting very close,” Lloyd said.

“Now it’s time for the coaches and the medical team to sit down together and work out the return-to-play date, which is very close.

“(It’s also) great news about Flynn, playing his first game for the season, and it’s a real credit to his resilience and his professionalism.

“Everyone is really excited to get down there on Saturday and watch Flynn play in the VFL, and stay a bit longer and watch the AFLW play after that.”

It’s a big weekend of footy for the Cats, with the AFL team set to take on Collingwood at the MCG on Friday night, before a VFL, AFLW double-header at Victoria Park on Saturday. The VFL sides are set to face off from 11.35am, before a match simulation between the AFLW sides from 3pm.

May not have happened if they'd selected an actual forward to replace Hawkins.
How happy were you when Jack kicked the winning goal v Tigers in 22?
He is a gun player at both ends of the ground; I love that we have the versatility to play Jack at both ends, same with Blicavs.

That seems early for a severe tear. You wouldn't think he'd be out for over a month from here. First final if we make it?
Of course that means we are taking what we hear in those “health updates” at face value….that he was actually running…who knows

Didn’t channel 7 show footage last week (Thursday or Friday night) of Blicavs running during training?

God, end the season so I don’t have to read Lloyd’s inane injury updates for a while.
This report was ok though. What needs to be improved?
Great news about Flynn Kroeger. If he impresses there is hope he gets a 1 year extension for starters. Talented kid with no luck at all so far.
At this stage of hammy injuries, running is part of the rehab, but they won't be doing 100% effort sprints.
I doubt that Blic will play before September, and that Hawk will play this week, but that's just based on long term support and seeing trends over the years.

Jack Henry had Lisfranc surgery on his "good" foot and is out for 4 months per CS in the presser just now.

I fear Matty Egan here.

Hope not - but Lisfranc in both feet.... what kind of shit luck is that getting stepped on BOTH fee the same way.

Best of luck to him in the off season and his recovery.

CS made a point to say all injuries are unrelated and that the specialists all suggest Jack will make full recovery and be good fro full preseason

Huge difference between navicular and lisfranc Daz. Understand the frustration, but it's innacurate to compare the two. Henry will recover from this.

There's running, and there's RUNNING.
He will be nowhere full speed yet
What stage of rehab is low intensity running usually Vdubs? How long before back to top speed?

Need to know the location and severity of tear, past history, and how long it took to have a painfree walking gait.
Each case is individualised.
Low level jogging is pretty early.

Didn't he get injured that game?

I know he only played half a match, but hard to know if it was due to injury, managing his return from injury or wanting to see what Ratugolea could offer in the ruck for a half with the knowlede that both Blicavs & Hawkins were already out for a minimum of 1 week
