Injury update:

  • Hawkins - Should be running this week and only minor, but he and Blitz' return will become more clear over the coming weeks
  • Simpson - Splint to come off on Friday and will then return to full training
  • James Willis - Had a Hernia operation last week and will start running tomorrow.
  • Jye Clark - Alt G running and in the next 2 weeks will start full training again. A couple of weeks behind Cam Guthrie.
  • Guthrie - Training and being able to run and sprint, and participate in training too. Looking good and on track for later this season.
  • Kroeger - Full training after Hip injury and will be available the next VFL game vs Collingwood.
  • Bews - Got through VFL game, will be monitored but should be good to go.
Hawkins running this week but they'll know more in the coming weeks (plural)

Talk about a contradiction in the space of one paragraph.

Mark Blicavs has commenced his rehabilitation program, while Tom Hawkins is expected to return to running later this week as the duo work through their respective programs following hamstring injuries on the weekend.

Geelong Cats General Manager of Football Simon Lloyd provided further detail to Monday’s preliminary update.

“Mark suffered a high hamstring strain and Tom suffered a minor hamstring strain. Both have gone straight into their rehabilitation immediately, and we expect Tom to be running by the backend of this week,” Lloyd said.

“It’s obviously unfortunate, but we’ll give progress reports over the coming weeks as they both work through their rehab.

“Probably one positive, which both Tom and Mark are pleased with, is the response from the playing group in the VFL on the weekend against the Bullants. We saw some great performances and a lot of those guys will be in contention for games this weekend against Port Adelaide.”

Lloyd said Sam Simpson will celebrate another milestone on his rehabilitation journey, with his splint set to be removed on Friday, following earlier surgery on a hand tendon.

“He’ll go into full training, which is positive for Sam,” Lloyd said.

“As I’ve said previously, he’s been fully professional (with his approach to rehabilitation), and he’s full training, so it’s great for Sam. It will be great to have him out there unencumbered.”

Meanwhile, young Cat James Willis is expected to be sidelined for the short term after a hernia operation last week. Willis, who is expected back at the Club on Wednesday, won't be sidelined for long and is set to jump straight into running on his return.

Fellow youngster Flynn Kroeger is also back in full training and is expected to be available for selection for the Cats’ VFL match against Collingwood next weekend.

Both Jhye Clark and Cameron Guthrie are progressing well in their respective programs from foot injuries.

“Jhye is now doing Alt-G, so he’s running, which is really positive,” Lloyd said.

“Ove the next fortnight, he will start in group training, so he’s probably a couple of weeks just behind Cam Guthrie. So he’s progressing as expected and ticking everything he needs to.

“Cam, even though he hasn’t been playing, he’s been fully involved in the program. What we’re seeing now on the track is speed and acceleration, so he’s working through all those steps.

“He’s still going through his reconditioning and doing his cross-training and things like that, but he’s involved in group training now as well, so we’re happy with his progress and he’s tracking really well. We’d love to have him out there this week, but (he’ll be back) in the not too distant future.”

Jed Bews made a successful, managed return through the VFL on the weekend, with Club medical staff to assess his progress over the coming week.

“Jed completed 8-9km, so it was part-game, but (he) still moved really well, moved freely,” Lloyd said.

“(He) came out post-game and it felt really positive. So that’s a real positive step for Jed, and we’ll assess him over the course of this week to see what it looks like for this week.

As much as I'd love him back in time for the Pies, do we think more realistically Guthrie could come in a week later vs St Kilda? If we win next week and resign ourselves to the fact Collingwood will be a loss, it might be worth it for the two elimination finals to follow. If we lose this week, it's probably not worth it at all this season.

AFL website's medical room has updated Hawkins timeframe, saying he'll miss at least Port and Collingwood games, but potentially more.
Blicavs could be ruled out the rest of the H&A, which is probably what most of us thought.

Good news on Kroeger- would like to see what he can do in 2 or 3 full games. He’s a risk but if there is potential might keep or perhaps rookie.

Should we make the finals would we risk Blitz with the lack of fitness in the weeks off?
Pretty sure they'd do everything possible to get him to the line. He really is that important. His fitness would still surpass virtually every other player out there, anyway, even with the time out of training and matches.

And it's not like you'd be holding him back for the bigger challenges later in the season...

If he is cleared to play, sure, he is a professional in how he prepares himself, and we would likely just have to rotate him on the bench rather than let him play full games.

A fit, but slightly under done Blicavs can still play 70% game time and be a massive influence. As long as there isn't the risk of him reinjuring himself.

7News reporting that Rohan under an injury cloud with an ankle concern - wonder if it's something new or the same issue from a couple of weeks back and that kept him out of the Brisbane clash?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's the latter and he's been managed through it
He was the one I was referring to a few days ago as someone else I had heard (but not confirmed) who they were concerned about. I think they are now more confident he will play this week (something was tight and now it is loose! Not sure what)…. What this is proving with RoHan though is that he struggles to put two good games in a row together. That has been a pattern where he looks sore…gets a rest and comes back and reminds us how much we miss him….

EDIT: Rohan is often hard to tell whether he will get up or not. If you remember he often is touch and go and sometimes late out and others plays like he should have been late out (as he is obviously injured). I expect 7 news report came out as he didn’t train today…but I think it is touch and go and has gone from unlikely to play earlier in week to likely.

If he doesn’t play I would think we might get to see Scratcher?

I think lack of fitness isn't something we have to worry about with Blicavs.

He'll be running during the latter stages of his recovery anyway, it's not like he'll be sitting around doing nothing for a month. I'd say even in a month's time post recovery he'll still be 'fitter' than most others on our list.

He last played a game for the club in May. And finally turns up on an injury report in August.

At least that was May and August in the same season, I guess...

#forthright

It's all about fan engagement to become known as 'the supporter's club'.

Oh, wait..........

Wait.

They told me in the other thread that Strange Cat (?) was talking about Sarah......
They were pulling your leg

Yes footage on the news shown him running around and Scott saying he’s running but he’s not in his thoughts for the H&A games and not expecting him back untill Sept

Lets keep the fingers crossed that Rohan is playing this weekend

If hes out - not saying this as a backwards jinks mock - but if Port Adelaide are half decent and want to have a genuine premiership chance then they should win this game in a canter - Hawkins Blicavs and possibly Rohan out
