The club's injury report which is a bit more comprehensive than that of the AFL, but contains no better news

Head of Physiotherapy and Medical Services Damian Raper provided an update on the injury list ahead of Round 11 against Carlton, presented by Castlereagh Imaging.

Matt Roberts

Matt is progressing well in his recovery from a knee injury. He is increasing his range of movement and working on his strength in the gym. He is expected to come out of the brace next week and commence running drills.

Dane Rampe
Dane’s neck injury continues to improve. He has increased his strength work and is in full contact training.

Joel Amartey
Joel is progressing his running speed and volume of skills training. He will integrate to full training over the next two weeks and is expected to return after the bye.

Peter Ladhams
Peter sustained a significant lateral ligament injury to his ankle in the third quarter against North Melbourne. His recovery is in the early stages, but we expect him to miss a number of weeks.

Tom McCartin
Tom’s symptoms continue to improve, however he will not be available for selection this weekend against Carlton. The club will continue to take a conservative approach and ensure he is asymptomatic before he returns to play.

Marc Sheather
Further investigations have shown that Marc’s foot soreness experienced following the Fremantle game was due to bone stress in his navicular. As a result, he will spend a period of time in a boot to deload, with his return to play yet to be determined.

Callum Mills
Callum’s rehabilitation on his calf injury is going well. He has commenced introductory running drills and strength training.

Logan McDonald
Logan is expected to miss at least 8 weeks with a medial ankle sprain. He began rehabilitation this week but remains in a boot.

And I might as well be the first to say it, but concerning with Tom, particularly when taking his brother's concussion issues into consideration.
Interestingly no mention of Paddy (or Sam Reid) this week. In preparation for move to inactive list to open up 2 spots for the Mid-season draft?
Just remarkable they sent Logan back onto the field.

You do have to question the wisdom of the medical staff on that one.

I had a grade 3 sprain of my ankle snowboarding.

I rode the rest of the day. At 80%.

Took boot off.

2 hours later my ankle was a balloon.

Well I hope the people taking the mickey out of Ladhams' reactions to injuries are satisfied that he's sufficiently injured now...

He was favouring his arm before blowing out his ankle, so was already playing under duress.

Ages ago I had a mate with a young family who had a job as a stacker and whacker. Broke his ankle at home on a Saturday morning. Kept His boots on . Went to work on Monday, somehow controlling the pain and not limping. ‘Slipped’ on a bit of cardboard just before lunch. He got compo. He said when the ambos took his boot off the swelling was instant. Said the ambos and docs knew he was lying about when he’d busted the ankle but never said a word.

His family were on the breadline. Argue the morality but the guy did the crazy brave thing.

Yikes.

For months after I was steady on flat concrete.

A tiny pebble . Stood on. Agony .

On Tom McCartin

“His [symptoms] are lingering for a bit longer than we hoped. It is what it is. You can’t do anything about it but you have to let the symptoms resolve completely. We’ll see what happens post-bye.

Or extremely well done by the club.

What does that mean? I realise it's politically correct to be ultra-sensitive about concussion these days, but even in those terms, we have 2 of our best and highest paid defenders out indefinitely and taking up list space, while the Swans and AFL slap themselves on the back at how progressive they are regarding concussions. Fine, I get that you have to protect players from early dementia and long-term brain damage, but if these guys are so sensitive that every slight head impact knocks them out for months on end, then maybe it's not good business to keep them on the roster. AFL is a game where head knocks are all but inevitable. If this is how the McCartins react to concussions, then they shouldn't be playing this sport and we should be actively hunting for more durable defenders.

Or maybe some clubs have higher concussion protocols than others?
A concussion is like mental illness.
Where ever there are symptoms. There is cause for concern.
How can you place a time frame on recovery from mental illness? You can't.

The brain is not something you can place a recovery curve on.

Must be some doubts around his future

Of course you're right, but it's a disaster for the club. We shouldn't be paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to defenders whose brains are this sensitive. Now when Tom comes back, every ball he contests and every tackle he makes will be a heart in the mouth moment, because we know that even the slightest suggestion of head impact will rule him out for months. This prolonged absence will mark him for the rest of his career. There's no way he ever takes a head knock again and comes back in a fortnight like most others. We can never have faith in his durability again.

Paddy was always a gamble and a noble one, but to have two star defenders one head knock away from retirement is troubling from a purely sporting perspective. It makes the whole list feel kinda unstable. We can never really count on them again even if they do return. I supported the club standing by Johnson and Naismith for years, but now I realise it was stupid and self-defeating. We can't carry broken players for so long, and shouldn't be expected to.

I dunno, I'm just disappointed I guess. I've just made my peace with Paddy never playing again, but Tom has come as a rude shock.

I would argue our conservative management of Tom is to ensure he can play long term unlike his brother who has now probably incurred too many head knocks to return to the game.

It's frustrating but to be honest I'd rather rest Tommy now in a season where there are other obvious cracks in our team, system and structures that we need to address before we make any improvement.

It would certainly make life easier to have all of our defenders back but I don't see us winning the flag even if they were all to return. Ultimately, why risk Tommy's health by rushing him into a backline that is constantly under siege each week due to our dysfunctioning midfield.
