I think clubs will be more conscious of concussion symptoms for all players.

Before a player might reluctantly miss 1 match because of AFL rules. Now it might be fairly common to to be stood down for 2 matches. And there will be more monitoring throughout the week and all players would be encouraged to self report symptoms.
I guess my point is that the McCartins are always gonna have to be treated differently with every incident.

For example Parker's hit on the weekend that had his face splitting open every quarter was far more severe than the incident that had Paddy being subbed out against Port. Providing he doesn't have concussion, Parker is able to say he's fine, bandage me up and let me go back out there. The McCartins will never have that option.

So again I think that brings into question the practicality aspect. Of course we could continue over the next five years giving them periods of game-time followed by extended periods of recovery after every contact to the head that they receive. But is it practical to do so?

Yeah that will probably be the case. Where the club can't assume they will be available all season. And need to develop contingencies. Rather than having a huge weakness every time Tom McCartin is unavailable.

But I feel the same about Amartey next season if he is one of our main key forwards. With his injury history, you can't assume he will be available for all the season. So we will need to have alternatives.

I've kinda bit my tongue on this because I know SFA about concussions and I'm not really qualified to be commenting, but this is a discussion board so what the hell.

I'm starting to doubt the feasibility of the McCartin brothers' future in the AFL. I understand we're being careful with them, and I feel that's absolutely the right way to go, but longer term, how is it going to be sustainable for them to miss multiple weeks every time they show symptoms?

When will it ever be "the right time" to play them?
The point is we know P. McCartin’s history. Tom McCartin ? Is he getting specialist treatment that is advising he not play and has had a prognosis that warrants that or are we being overly cautious because of his genes ? Or all the media and information on the topic that has been front and centre this year. Tbh I find the whole T. McCartin one bizarre the way it has unfolded and agree with you that both of them have serious questions over their ability to endure the rigours of this code.At some stage you have to cut your losses.

Maybe our players self-report more than other teams? just a guess

Happy for the club to take a cautious approach to it but it highlights our lack of depth, especially when compounded by injuries.

I still have no idea how Paddy got concussed. It was so innocuous. It’s kinda frustrating in a way. The primitive part of my brain wants to shake him and tell him to harden the f up, but that would probably give him a concussion:(.

And now whatever’s wrong with him seems to have rubbed off on his brother. It’s so weird. If Tommy’s not back soon, we should probably cut our losses with both. I don’t think we’re can afford to carry them like we did with Naismith and Johnson.

4 year contract with Tommy, 2 for Paddy - so it’s not really a choice for a while anyway. Back them in and do what we can with what we’ve got.

Both have always had the best attitude to their football and the club. They’re not phoning in phantom symptoms because they couldn’t be arsed playing. It’s difficult ongoing situation for club and player(s) to navigate but all parties in it for long haul

Daniel Venables was given a clear cut answer by the medical stuff and retired immediately.

Im fascinated in a sense the different degrees of risk factor here.
Hate to say it but the Swans hierarchy don't seem to have grasped the reality of the situation.

The reality is the McCartins have a genetic predisposition to concussion and the club needs to wise up to this and it's going to bite them in the ass if they can't face the facts.

Not a chance at all mate club is highly professional and will be consulting with highly qualified medical personnel on a daily/weekly basis.

We know exactly where Paddy is at its just not public and rightly so its nobody business.

Was just making a pararell comparison to how its handled on a individual basis.

Exactly what Andrew Dillon said at a lunch last week

I’m sure you’re right re: the Swans professionalism.

But there were concerns re: Tom’s career way back in 2019 due to concussion.

And we all know the history with Paddy.

Could we lose both? It has to be a genuine possibility.

Out of curiosity, can you recall how many times Tom has been KO'd?

The club's injury report which is a bit more comprehensive than that of the AFL, but contains no better news

Head of Physiotherapy and Medical Services Damian Raper provided an update on the injury list ahead of Round 11 against Carlton, presented by Castlereagh Imaging.

Matt Roberts

Matt is progressing well in his recovery from a knee injury. He is increasing his range of movement and working on his strength in the gym. He is expected to come out of the brace next week and commence running drills.

Dane Rampe
Dane’s neck injury continues to improve. He has increased his strength work and is in full contact training.

Joel Amartey
Joel is progressing his running speed and volume of skills training. He will integrate to full training over the next two weeks and is expected to return after the bye.

Peter Ladhams
Peter sustained a significant lateral ligament injury to his ankle in the third quarter against North Melbourne. His recovery is in the early stages, but we expect him to miss a number of weeks.

Tom McCartin
Tom’s symptoms continue to improve, however he will not be available for selection this weekend against Carlton. The club will continue to take a conservative approach and ensure he is asymptomatic before he returns to play.

Marc Sheather
Further investigations have shown that Marc’s foot soreness experienced following the Fremantle game was due to bone stress in his navicular. As a result, he will spend a period of time in a boot to deload, with his return to play yet to be determined.

Callum Mills
Callum’s rehabilitation on his calf injury is going well. He has commenced introductory running drills and strength training.

Logan McDonald
Logan is expected to miss at least 8 weeks with a medial ankle sprain. He began rehabilitation this week but remains in a boot.

And I might as well be the first to say it, but concerning with Tom, particularly when taking his brother's concussion issues into consideration.
Interestingly no mention of Paddy (or Sam Reid) this week. In preparation for move to inactive list to open up 2 spots for the Mid-season draft?
