From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

Honouring the full 7 year contract @ $1m per season, coming off a significant hamstring injury? Reeks of buyers remorse from the Dees, and is wholly reminiscent of the Treloar/Grundy situations at the Pies.

How Crows supporters are literally refusing to see the parallels is beyond me, and stinks of desperation.
Clearly that's a concern. And you'd have to wonder how that effects his value at the trade table.

Pick 9, F1 (likely to be mid/high teen), McAdam and our first R2 would be a steal for a player who is a league top five player and a player that puts us in contention in 2024. Reckon Melbourne might entertain that deal, would give them draft hands to engineer in Harley Reid plus more.

We need to be bold, the time is now - get it done!

Did Western Bulldogs sell the farm for Treloar once they knew he was on the outer and Pies wanted to get him off their books?
Did the Dees sell the farm for Grundy once they knew he was on the outer and the Pies wanted to get him off their books?

If the situation down at Melbourne is as bad as it sounds in terms of the club/player relationship, there's no way we'd want to cough up those picks AND honour the full 7 year contract that the Dees were reckless enough in offering him.

Oliver's contract is not reckless, it's fair for one of the best players in the competition, which neither Treloar nor Grundy ever were

Oliver is a top 5 midfielder, the last time a top 5 midfielder was traded was Dangerfield, this doesn't happen every year.

Even Neale wasn't a top 5 comp mid when he went to Brisbane even though he is one now

Treloar and Grundy arent nearing the best midfielder in the comp status.
This is not the same. You simply do not ignore a chance to get Clayton Oliver if available.

So now that the Clarry distraction is behind us…………

We are likely to have 6 spots available via trading or the draft.

Out - Brown, McPherson, Hately, Doedee, McAdam and Himmelberg

Seedsman and McAsey have already been replaced by Brown and Keane. Newchurch and Borlase don’t count because they were on the Cat B Rookie List.

The general consensus is that the draft is not that deep so perhaps 3 from the draft and 3 from trades (it is possible that Borlase will be one of the six if we want him as back up and we can’t keep him on the Cat B list).

Out - Forward/Back up Ruck (Himmelberg) In - Chol?

Out- Third Tall Defender (Doedee) In - Burgess?

Out - Medium/Small defender (McPherson)

Out - 2 X Inside Mids (Hately, Brown)

Out - Medium/Small Forward(McAdam)

Who in the draft would be available at our current picks and would fill the gaps in our squad? Our other problem is the number of players who will miss some or all of next season due to injury. Murray, Butts, Schoenberg, possibly Jones.

It's actually more complicated than that:
  • While McAsey was replaced by Brown, McAsey was on the senior list, while Brown was on the rookie list. Thus the Brown/McAsey vacancy is on the senior list.
  • McPherson is/was on the rookie list... and our senior list was full this year, so his replacement will need to be a rookie as well.
  • Murray needs to be upgraded to the senior list this year.
  • We're still waiting for official confirmation from the AFL, regarding the return of the Veterans List (Sloane) and allowing mid-season draftees to spend a 4th year on the rookie list (Parnell).
Assuming the AFL formally announces these list changes, then our current list mathematics is as follows:
Senior List Vacancies: McAsey (Brown), Doedee, McAdam, Himmelberg, Sloane, Hately
Rookie List Vacancies: Murray, McPherson
Rookie Upgrade: Murray

Total vacancies:
Senior List: 5
Rookie List: 2

** We also have the option of delisting 1-2 contracted senior players, and re-signing them (as DFAs) to the rookie list (before the rookie draft).

There was article a couple of days ago which stated the veterans list wasn't going ahead this year (specifically mentioned Sloane as an example)

However mid season draft picks would be allowed to stay on the rookie list and extra season (specifically mentioned Parnell and Ash Johnson)

Thanks, I hadn't seen it. I don't frequent the AFL website very often.

So.. Sloane stays on the senior list, and Parnell can wait another year before being upgraded. At least the MSD decision improves our list mathematics slightly.

Thanks for that!

It confirms that the Veterans List is a non-starter, having not been included in the CBA. However, it only says that clubs are "anticipating" MSD recruits being given 3.5 years on the rookie list - it hasn't been formally announced yet.

Veterans List - confirmed dead (for now, at least)
MSD extensions - still unconfirmed

Yeah, I just re-read that

So, the Harrison Petty story grinds to a halt. Interesting that it is only two years which, while contracted is hardly LOCKED IN. He's a young fellow and would be a nice acquisition when his two years are up!

From the AFL website:

KEY DEE NOT LEAVING

MELBOURNE forward Harrison Petty will stay at the Demons despite Adelaide's interest in the premiership player.

The Demons will be in negotiations with the Crows to trade in forward Shane McAdam, with Adelaide having interest in luring back South Australian Petty.

However, despite having a pull home, Petty is locked in to remain at Melbourne, where he is contracted for the next two seasons and highly valued as a part of the Dees' group.

Petty was a key player in the club's 2021 premiership as a defender but had turned to be a forward this year before his ankle injury in round 21.
IF oliver stays at melb, this will startup again. We will hold out on mcadam unless petty part of it. However Oliver might trump that party and leverage.

Im still confident we will have petty next year although this oliver thing was unexpected and I concede of he was coming to us petty wont be.

Melbourne won't let Petty go this off season. He is too important to them.

I think we would be having discussions now with him but for 12 months time. Melbourne will want a first round pick which we should be able to accommodate. I think we will be competing with Port.

You know what is really sad... Power supporters coming here downplaying Oliver because the prospect of him landing at Adelaide makes them feel sad 😭

Also Adelaide supporters who are so mentally immature, that they have self preservation measures in place to not get their hopes up, because they can't just deal with disappointment like actual adults.

Which one are you?

Thanks for the summary.

I can't see us having more than three picks in the main draft so if my maths is correct my guess is we will bring in Burgess and one other and take three picks to the draft.

I am sure we will try to move up but we may try to get 2024 pick for McAdam and still have three picks in the first two rounds.

If I have followed that correctly.
