Flip the dates, and the Scouse boom-bust cycle adapts really quite well to Adelaide

Should've just posted the Richmond optimism chart from the Bay .. looks a little similar

Happy with that but Nicks ain’t making Laird sub, so he’s either defence or midfield, issue is he doesn’t fit in either.
Maybe starting on the bench and rotating through both areas as needed?

Probably the best we can hope for at this stage, and hopefully not taking too much game time from other developing players.

That's Port.

We are a horizontal line at mid level until pre season, then if pre season goes well we jump up a lot, if it goes bad it bumps up a little and then, lately, it just drops steadily from there to bottom out in July and Aug with a few late wins usually pushing us back up to mid range ready to sit there for the offseason again.

Just a random "Ruck" related question.
People always praise the ruckman who is "like an extra midfielder" or even another forward.
Is the any hope for a ruckman who is actually closer to those things to begin with eg, slightly shorter, faster & more aerobic and can actually kick goals
I wonder if someone like Toby Murray could become that.. where winning the tap then disappearing is no longer our prime objective🤔

I'm big on Toby Murray ....has developed massively in his first year within a professional program

I could see a ruck combo of Thilthorpe & Turray .....still not big supporter of your best players crashing into other blokes at CBA's ...what with all the knee clashes & injury risks

Yeah agree, maybe that's why ROBs such a "good" foil..I'm actually pretty surprised he's so durable, he looks like he could injure himself getting out of bed.
I'll be keeping a close eye on T-Muz this year.. with my fingers crossed.

It is as if you are buying a new phone for the camera.

He's top 4 for disposals, clearances and tackles for players his age.

Yeah, there's a way to go. But that's not a bad place to start.
I'm not saying he is crap, he is one of my favourite players but I guess when we are discussing a player being "elite" then what are the parameters of being elite?

Is it top 2% of the comp (top 20 players)

Is it top 50 player, top 100?

For me it is the first one, top 20 players and I just do not think Soligo will get there, at this stage we have one player on our team who could get there and that is Rankine.

Once again, that is not a sledge on Soligo but on this board we routinely over rate our players ( sadly our coaching box is worse for it, probably still think Laird is on the cusp of elite) and calling Soligo a prospect of being elite is one of them.

Why did that dickhead Geelong supporter have to post this at the start of the 2017 season?! I've never quite known who exactly to blame for losing the 2017 GF but now we've got a clear scapegoat!

Unfortunately, there are multiple definitions of "elite" and so it gets a bit confusing. Particularly if different definitions are used in the answer to the question.

I tend to stick to the AFL's definitions
  1. Elite - top 10% of players that year (about 55ish)
  2. Above average - top 33%
  3. Average - 34% to 67%
  4. Below average - last 33%
Most premiership teams have a decent number of top 10% players (6ish?), but also bat deep for average or better.

Ie the top 6 and bottom 6 players in the team determine whether you can win it or not.

Soligo could be a top 55 player in the league at some point during his prime years. This would help us with a premiership tilt.

Top 55 I can see that.

To be fair though, AFL definitions are a low bar, their definition of "AFL superstar" is anyone with more than 3 games :)

Its not the best. Our premiership squads have almost all of our all time best players and that squad also includes several of the best all time players. Riccuito, Modra, Jarman, McLeod, Smart.

This squad is a long way from being on the same page.

I don’t think the competition is nearly as strong as it used to be. Look at the Port team now - which is generally around the mark - and compare that to their early 2000’s team

Depth of player is not what it once was since the expansion

Given the 2024 draft is with us next week, who do we all think the Crows should pick at Pick 4 which will most likely become Pick 5 with a bid on Levi Ashcroft? I dare say a number of people would be picking Sid Draper in a heartbeat. For me, I would personally be picking Harvey Langford; the highlights put together by Noobermensch below provide ample justification as to why. Interested in everyone's thoughts. :)

Interesting to find Jermaine Miller is a ridgey didge Crows NGA according to Draft journalist Dan Batten, Eddie Betts and Graham Johncock's nephew.

Lively small forward Jermaine Miller, tied to Adelaide’s NGA, turned it on with four first-half goals for South Australia in their win over Vic Metro, one of those a great finish at speed from 40 metres on the run.

Miller has strong links to the Crows as the nephew of Adelaide and Carlton legend Eddie Betts and 227-game Crow Graham Johncock.

A sensational seven-goal second term catapulted South Australia to a comfortable 32-point win against Victoria Metro in Game 2 of the Marsh AFL U16 National Championships on the Gold Coast.

Coming off a hard-fought 10-point win against Western Australia in Game 1 at Thebarton, the Croweaters displayed supreme efficiency with ball in hand as they handled the slippery conditions far better than their opponents.

Having kept the Big V to just five behinds in the opening term, Heath Younie’s charges started brightly to lead by 14 points at the opening change.

Crafty SA goalsneak Jermaine Miller was at the coalface of his team’s match-winning surge, booting the third goal of the first term before setting up teammate Memphis Webb for the opening major of the second stanza.

Miller, from Central District, then exploded to boot three of SA’s next five goals in succession, including a classy finish on the run after dodging around his opponent from 40m.

Hard-running Taj Garrett kicked the Croweaters’ only goal of the third term on the run from 25m as Victoria Metro looked to respond in the second half.

But some mature slow play to retain possession and take the sting out of the opposition’s charge in the fourth term ensured the margin would remain beyond five goals, as tall forward Ryan Davies nailed his set shot from 30m.

Miller finished with four majors while Kangaroo Island product Cain Florance hit the scoreboard with three.

SA joint vice-captain Dougie Cochrane was named by the coaching staff as the Croweaters’ best performer, with consistent midfielder Archie Van Dyk and captain Kodah Edwards also rated highly.

SA will now prepare for its final contest of the tournament as it looks to remain undefeated with three victories in succession to give itself a chance of claiming the championship.

Game 3 is on Friday, against Victoria Country at Southport’s Fankhauser Reserve, from 11.15am SA time.

Might suit us in a couple of years if Jermaine Miller keeps improving...
