Hope so CTD. The club need something to “sell” to the members for next year.

If we are chasing a big fish next year (eg LMcD), it doesn’t make much sense to be armed with 3 first rounders as Sydney (or whoever) will smell desperation and want them all.
Much better to use one this year so we have only two next year and can say “sorry but that’s all we got”.

Keep in mind also that we will have access to trading of our 2025 F1 by next trade period also. We definitely do not want to have 4 first round picks available for trade at that time, particularly if McDonald kicks 50+ in 2024.

Seems that nothing substantial is ever done to fix WA footy as a whole.
A soft cap for us and WC is definitely putting Eastern States clubs in pole
Position.
You can talk up all the draft pick bull, but history has shown it hasn’t worked
for GC, GWS in the past.
It’s not going to work for us and WC, the best off field organisations have the
edge.
WA footy commission? Lions, Sydney get or have concessions, NGA, here in the
West it’s crickets.
WC have their flags, arrogance but the reality is that they are years away.
Bet they still cry foul over this as we still think we can beat a stacked hand.

I wouldn't be against selling our future first again (as long as we keep the other 2). Would it be crazy to offer it up for around the ~pick 10 mark this year, banking on the fact we can improve next season with the resources we already have. Meanwhile other clubs might like the odds we'll be bad again next year and see it as value. Then at least we'll have a good pick this year and potentially 1 or 2 next year also. Surely we have to get into this draft, it will be extremely depressing to do nothing and fill up our list with 5 junk picks.

Mate do I have a thread for you!!!!

I wonder how much the flying weighs down some players. i think we as locals (or ex locals for me) normalise that cross Nullabor flight and some Victoria teams use the "no more flying every fortnight" as a pitch

Also i do wonder if Cerra would have stayed if COVID and the resulting isolation from his reportedly close family hadn't happened?

It seems we are looking at bringing in a mature age KPD to cover the role Hamling played last year.

Sharp supposedly coming either DFA or via SSP. The preferred option for Sharp will depend on how many ND selections we want to take.

A good chance we take another mature age selection late in the ND.

What about Jaiden Hunter from Essendon. Remains unsigned. Walls said he was one of the four we were interested in for the mid season draft but rated Stanley slightly higher. Stanley a good selection with Henry now gone. I know Hunter was playing KPF with Perth but my understanding is he has played well as KPD. He has had some injury issues but could be an option if Essendon don’t re-sign.

If our big fish target is ooc then we have nothing to worry about. PSD threat from WC won’t even be there as we will be able to use our lowest pick on them in the actual draft if it got to that or use currency to move draft order if we need to.

i think we have to use a first next year anyway according to the rules.

If we trade for a first this year, we’ve used a first now.

Only issue with Hunter as a KPD is does he really fill the hole we have in the list?

There's probably 3-4 options that'll be available as either DFAs or mature agers in the draft that are more ready to play now.

I think the club will look for someone who's ready now but could spend 5+ years on the list of they're good enough. Don't know if that's possible but we'll try that I'd say.

From a good news/bad news perspective - Next season is going to be awesome to a degree, not only get to watch us hopefully move up the ladder but we have three additional games each week to deathride other clubs.
My main concern with this however is that there will be 3-6 games next year where I will be totally conflicted in possibly wanting the slime to win.
It will not be a good feeling.
Need to start work on coping mechanisms over the pre season.

As a Freo fan, if you don't have coping mechanisms yet then I don't know what to tell you.

Walls is looking to plug certain demographic holes to round out the list so he will be looking at blokes overlooked, for whatever reason, in past drafts. Talls often take a while to develop and given fewer draftees are taken each year than in the past, there is substance to the theory. Lots of good ones don't get taken in the rush to snaffle the latest at the top end and with all this bullshit points matching.

Good ones that really ****ing want it.

My tip is Mutaz El Nour, or someone similar, for the Hamling role.

What would the hypothetical go be here -

Joel Smith returns positive test the day after trades.

Imagine if he was traded and going to a new club and has to cop a ban.

Would the AFL rescind the trade? Technically he failed as a Melb player.

What would happen?

id be looking at Port’s future first into one of those North picks. 15, 17 and 18
It really depends on WC and pick 1, if they like the look of players in that 15-18 range (20-23 on the night) they may trade 1 for 2,15,17,18 leaving north with 1 & 3, then we are no chance.
If WC hold firm on 2&3 (with 23 going back to north) then I can see north wanting to trade some of those picks into next years draft.
