I'm a big fan of Hamling but I wouldn't have given him a contract early in the season. He started performing well relatively late in the season. Imo.
Agreed.

Ffs, until the last 4 weeks this board had him as delisted, maybe rookies for depth

Damning article about Hamling from Woodduck, was fairly amateurish from Freo
Damning article?

It confirms everything we already knew

we played it completely fine, he said himself that he wasn't sure where he would be playing next year if he was at Freo, Sydney has a spot open for him.

The only thing you can possibly argue is we should send Cox forward but then that pisses Cox off, there just isn't a spot for Hamling

We definitely shouldn't have offered him a deal early in the year, we had tight list spots and he was coming off 4 years of injury and garbage performances

We have already filled his spot with another backup, the club couldn't do it any better tbh, great work from the club.

Why amateurish?

He was offered a contract earlier in the season for 1 year as a rookie. That sounded like before he had played any AFL but was playing consistently at Peel. He had come off two seasons of playing 1 game in each.

He then played some games when Cox was injured. Fremantle match committee chose to bring back Cox as a KPD. Hamling felt he could have stayed and Cox played forward.

Cox played the last game as a forward and to be honest looked a bit lost. I don’t mind the swing forward for stints within a game but other than that he has shown to be a KPD.

Sydney offered 2 years with a trigger for a third. Sydney offered opportunity for first 22. Freo couldn’t guarantee that. Freo came to the party with 2 years in the end but he decided Sydney gave him more opportunity to play AFL, whereas at Freo he was depth KPD cover.

Whilst it sounds a bit like the Logue situation. The circumstances are very different. We stuffed up the Logue negotiations but in this case to jump into a 2 year offer without having played afl, and after playing 2 games in the previous 3 seasons (and having injury issues in 2022 with knee and ankle) would have been negligent almost.

These sort of players are the ones left usually until after trade period. Think similar scenario to Sam Day and Sam Reid.

We then replaced 30 year old Hamling who has played 91 afl games with 27 year old Oscar McDonald who has played 86 afl games. Also OMac Full back of the year in the VFL. Hamling got pipped for that honour by teammate Blight in the WAFL team of the year.

I honestly don't think we'll have much of downgrade in the team if we fill the holes correctly.
The Office Thats GIF

I made the call last year we had sold hawthorn a pup in Meek and I think Hamling is this year's. Shows how short
the market in kpps is: he is done and the first time he actually has to play on the first or second tall the Swans will have the magnitude of their folly revealed.

Magnitude of their folly? Rofl. Very harsh on Joel. He'll go good for Sydney.

No club in the AFL signs a 30+ year old depth player with injury issues for two years. Not a single one.

He's best 22 at Sydney now - that's the difference. And they're beyond desperate given his injury issues imo.

The club handled the situation the only way they could unfortunately for Hamling.

Now we've signed the best state league KPD not sure we'll miss him either. People forget McDonald was a best 22 player for a few years - then he got kept out of the side by Lever and May before injuries ruined him at Carlton.

Lol why would we sign someone early in the year who had played 2 games in the last four years at that point.

That article makes Hammer come across as very bitter. "Cox should've played forward and I should've stayed" when Cox is the preferred defender is a bit much.

Mate. It’s Joel Hamling. A depth defender. We would have kept him if we wanted to.
Makes you wonder how long we had been tracking McDonald, who looks like an upgrade over Hamling to me.
3 years younger, bigger (height and weight) and a better kick. We were probably thinking of picking him in the draft if Hamling had stayed, but pulled the trigger as a DFA as we had the list spot available and to stop anyone else stealing him.

Something seems fishy about Hamling claiming the contract offer came too late.. didn't David Walls say that Hamling had an offer on the table for quite some time, or am I imagining that?

or was "quite some time" not as long as David Walls likes us to believe...

Yeah it does! How bout the 4 years we paid you top dollar to be injured the hole time?

Jye will kick 10 on him you watch.

Sydney should have gone after Oscar McDonald. Walls playing 4D chess with the Swans. 😎

The part that you missed with “fishy” is the name of Hamling’s Manager… pretty sure it’s Colon.

Makes sense the article now, I thing Colon wrote it himself!

I hope so. I’m also looking forward to seeing Sharp get 25+ and kick 2 playing on Henry as we send st Kilda to the bottom of the table

Port and Collingwood are bottom 2. St Kilda will have to finish 3rd to bottom.

Pretty normal for people who get injured doing their job to get paid. They don't come away with a debt for that.

What did you think about how his rehabilitation was handled?

I can easily see Port and St Kilda missing the eight.

Say we end up with a top 5 pick and then two in the teens (ours and Collingwood), keep top 10 pick, keep second and trade the other two with a f2 for McDonald (and F3 coming back).

13, 16, F2 > McDonald & F3

I might be dreaming but would be a good outcome.

I think two teen picks is enough for McDonald as he is out of contract.

Crows got Dawson for pick 15 roughly.

I think Collingwood is more likely to drop down the ladder.

Can’t see port sliding to bottom 5 teams, imagine we end up with something like 9 (port) 13 (freo) & 16 (pies) next year.
