The AFL has tightened its rules around head-high contact for 2022, with more suspensions likely to be given out under tweaks for the Match Review and Tribunal.

Previously when a high bump or front-on contact occurred, “strong consideration” had to be given to the potential to cause injury. New for next season, the potential to cause injury must be factored into the impact grading.

It means, as with striking charges, any high contact with the potential to cause injury will “usually” be classified as either medium, high or severe impact - not low impact.

A medium impact grading along with careless conduct and high contact results in a one-match suspension.
They must have used the ARC to determine that there was head high contact in that case then. Because nobody watching the actual footage would have seen it.

Whiplash - for certain. Late bump so a free kick - no challenge to that. Contact, well even the umpires in the Pakastan Test series would have given a little shake of their heads to that.

Hawkins not fined for staging.

Parody confirmed.

"It was the view of the MRO that Hawkins exaggerated the contact but that his actions did not constitute a reportable offence."

Staging is okay as long as it's not "excessive". Ridiculous.

The MRO condones players diving and flopping for frees and putting pressure on umpires.

It's a quality organisation, the AFL.

Don’t even get me started on ‘dropping at the knees’ when approaching a tackle and ‘lifting the arm’.

Their use of pedantic language to justify certain outcomes is world class.

If the NMFC decided it was to play European Handball, I’d never watch another AFL match.

This dropping the knees is my biggest beef with the way the game is being played. It’s a disease that is killing the game. Selwood initiated, league approved. Made a rod for their own back with disastrous consequences. Nearly impossible to tackle legally now.

We can attempt to downgrade it from medium to low considering Stanley played out the game. That was a lot less aggressive than the Darcy Gardiner one and he was fined. The other was Willie Rioli and he got off completely after appeal.

Darcy Gardiner, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with Engaging in Rough Conduct against Josh Daicos, Collingwood, during the first quarter of the Round Five match between the Brisbane Lions and Collingwood played at the Gabba on Thursday April 14, 2022.

In summary, he can accept a $2000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Intentional Conduct, Low Impact, Body Contact. The incident was classified as a $3000 sanction as a first offence. The player can accept a $2000 sanction with an early plea.

If the Gardiner one was assessed as low impact, the McKay incident was negligible in comparison.

Freezing the image. Doesn't look great.

Yep, he’d had his eyes off the footy for a few seconds before this too. Don’t see how anyone can argue this one. Forget about the whataboutism regarding other incidents around the league. Pretty silly by Ben, but can forgive him for being frustrated after playing a lone hand down back the whole day.

You really have to wonder how this even got looked at considering Stanley gets up to take his kick straight away?

It wasn’t even talked about or highlighted in the coverage, so someone has brought it to their attention.

If this was Dangerfield or Hawkins, you can bet that Christen would have graded it as force below what is required for a suspension or low and handed them a fine.

Had the club accepted or will they challenge the grading of medium force?

Not the brightest decision but hard to see how it is "medium" force. He's 200+ cm and pushing towards 100kg's - medium impact does not equal this result.

(B) HEAD-HIGH CONTACT:
Whereas previously “strong consideration” was required to be
given to the potential to cause injury, the potential to cause injury
must now be factored into the determination of Impact for
Head-High Contact.
Additionally, any Careless or Intentional
Forceful Front-On Contact or Rough Conduct (High Bumps) where
High Contact has been made and that has the potential to cause
injury will usually be classified at a minimum as Medium Impact.

Inconsistent crock pof shite...
